Default Help ps3 has flashing red light!

So I went to turn on my 60gb ps3 fat but when I did it flashed green, then beeped and flashed yellow, then turned red and kept flashing red. I've had it for a few years and I've never had a problem like this but I've heard about a 'yellow light of death' which can occur in these old ps3's. I've heard that it's from overheating and recently I stupidly moved a stack of games so that they were covering the air vents. I didn't realise what I'd done until I got the lights and started looking it up on the internet, but I don't know if it's because of that because it's been off most of the time since I put the games over the air vents because I got a Wii.

Anyway does anyone know whether it will fix itself if I put it out in the open and give it some time, or whether I can do anything at home to fix it? If not, how should I go about repairing it or is it better just to buy a new one?

Clean off the dust so it doesn't collect in air vent. Once you have cleaned dust off of your console and placed it in an area where it is not obstructed, it's time to try a couple quick fixes:

    * Unplug the console from the wall for half an hour, then plug it back in.
    * Remove the hard drive and put it back or replace.
    * Check all wires and connections to the console.

If you can get a hard drive from someone else which you know works, you will determine right away if you can replace the hard drive to fix yellow light of death problem. In most cases, there will be more substantial damage internally which will require you to either send the console in to Sony or learn how to fix the Playstation 3 yellow light blinking problem on your own.
Doing it on your own is much faster and will cost you less. Some online programs offer detailed video instructions that walk you through it in less than an hour and some will even offer some extra bonuses that make your system more functional once the problem is fixed.
But, I haven't tried those guides myself. Hope this helps.

EDIT: Also, you should've posted this thread in Tech Help subforum. :)
    EDIT2: Thread's moved!

This has happened before, like Baron said, I suggest you leave your PS3 for 15-30 minutes.

Thankyou so much for the advice and sorry for posting it in the wrong spot. :)
I'll try cleaning it and stuff tomorrow cause it's like 3am here and hopefully that will work. If I have to take out the hard drive though, how do you take it out, I was trying to open that plastic thing on the side earlier but I couldn't figure it out. Haha I'm not very good at these things!

    No problem, dude.

How to take out PS3 hard drive?

First, you need to plug in an external USB hard drive to extract your precious saved-game data, videos, downloaded games, etc.
Once the external USB hard drive is plugged in, turn on your PS3. Go to the Saved Data Utility.
Select the external USB hard drive as the destination of where you want the saved data to extract to.
The files will copy over, and that's as easy as 1, 2, 3...
Once the files are done transferring, turn off the PS3, and unplug everything. Flip it over and pull off the plastic flap labeled, "HDD".
Using a screwdriver, remove the blue screw. This will detach the hard drive from the PS3.
Using the metal paperclip tab, slide and then pull the hard drive out from the PS3.
Next, you need to remove the metal shield from the actual hard drive. Remove the two screws that rest on the same side of the hard drive as the blue screw. Be careful! These screws are very easy to strip.
When the screws are removed, the hard drive should easily detach from the metal shield. Now you're done with the stock PS3 hard drive.
Then, you can swap it for another one.
    Hope this helps.

But it doesn't turn on at all so how would I do all that? Does it just turn on if there's an external hard drive plugged in?
Also do you know why it's doing this in the first place, because I don't know that much about technical things and I've heard it happens because of overheating and I've also briefly heard about HDD problems which is what I assume you're talking about but I really have no idea what they are.
If I did end up having to replace the hard drive, would I be able to use any type of external hard drive or would I have to buy one made exclusively for the ps3?

Thanks again for all the help and sorry for all the questions. :)

It happens due to overheating most of the time.
Well, if you can't turn on your PS3, then skip the first 3 steps and simply remove the hard drive. Also I really think it's better to buy a new console...
And no, PS3 uses only special hard drives.

    You have 2 options:
    1. Let sony fix your PS3. Then you won't ditch memory card slots, ps2 backwards compatability, and other 60gb only PS3 features.
    2. Buy a slim, but ditch PS2 Backwards Compatability.
    3. Try the heatgun fix or those other quick fixes if you don't want to get it repaired.

Thanks for replying, I'm gonna look into getting it repaired but if it ends up costing more than it would to get a new one I'll probably just buy a pre-owned slim. :)

Then how come every MS fanboy has not gone over to sony after RRoD after the third one

OT: YLoD happend to my friend he said there was a special site for it and sony said less then 1% chance of it happinig. Let's hope I can keep mine out of YLoD for some time. Contact them and they'll email you back with the link. I suggest you remove your HDD before sending it to them though.

They always say common issues have low chances, since if it is even 5%, then that will tarnish their PR.

It happens the most with NTSC 20gb and NTSC/PAL 60gb PS3s, as the GPU/CPU are 90nm, and they consume the most power (180w) and generate a lot of heat.

If you don't want failure, a slim would be the best bet. They generate a lot less heat, and comsume less power.
