Default CD made by the American Red Cross contains a virus?

I took and American Red Cross babysitting course in May 2010. Along with my babysitter's handbook, it came with a CD specifically made by the Red Cross. I recently tried the CD out. I was about to put it on my netbook (Which I am on right now), and then realized that my netbook had no CD drive. I did it on my family's main computer, and I popped the Red Cross disk in. While I was testing it out, this random popup about a Adobe progrm that I didn't want to download came up. Before it could completely install, I closed the installation window and ejected the CD. Plus, the program was REALLY SLOW. The main computer has no program containing malware or viruses. Plus, the Red Cross is a trusted organization. What happened?

Because we all know that Adobe has trouble getting their free products (that are necessary for a lot of the programs we use daily) out there and rely on viruses to get the word out.

Sounds more like Adobe trying to download something required to get what was on disc to work. Or possibly just an update to an existing program. Happens quite often.

And, honestly, if the program that's downloading has Adobe on it...it's not likely that it's a virus.

Holy crud I did not know that o_e. Remind me to be thankful that my netbook doesn't have a disk drive.

Oh yeah, and the Adobe thing was called Adobe Acrobat, and one of the CD requirements was NOT Adobe Acrobat.

Can someone tell me how to make sure it doesn't happen again if I decide to use the CD again?

You could turn off autoplay. I think you do that by right clicking the CD drive after selecting My Computer and there should be an option on one of the tabs to turn off autoplay. Doing that means that no CD will automatically start up though even if it's not the one from the Red Cross.
