I heard there were vending machines in Japan that offer used women's panties. Has anyone who's been to/lives in Japan verify this? Snopes says it's true.

True or not, what does everyone think of this?

Yes, I saw this in a documentary once, it is true...
I'm not sure if it still goes on today, but it might.

I personally think it disgusting, but every culture has there low points I suppose -.-

Meh, true or not it's no big deal. Harms no-one and there are far weirder fetishes. And bigger problems with Japanese society.

I watched some TV show/special on strange practices in Asian cultures a few years back..
Japan also has vending machines for:

-foam sexual parts
-inhalers
-TV remotes
-etc.

Ya.. they are a little out there when it comes to the rest of the world

Not in the same machine, I hope. That is relatively disturbing.

They even have vending machines for porn. I can't remember where I read about it, but if you Google it, a bunch of articles about it show up. Apparently some of them have these sorta cover things that keep it out of view so you can go pick out whatever and nobody will knooooow. Ahaha. And also shutters that close over the glass at certain times of the day?

That's awesome. If I ever go to Japan, I'm definitely paying one of them a visit.

I used to know a DJ who was married to a woman from Japan. I had asked him about the used panties thing once, and his reply was something like "yeah, it's a quick way for a college girl to make some money when she needs it."

While I personally don't have an attraction to girls panties, I'm not going to say anything bad about people who do, and I also won't say anything bad about a culture that doesn't hide the fact that people have fetishes, and find different things to be sexually attractive. Personally, I prefer the more open approach as opposed to the fundamentalist approach of making people feel ashamed of any sort of turnon.

And anyway, in this scenario, the girls are selling their panties willingly, and are not forced to, which I feel is not a bad thing.

I personally never saw any of these machines in Japan, but I'm pretty sure they're legit. They're widely documented enough.

Like Satoshi-kun said, it's my understanding that the girls choose to sell their used panties willingly, and the people who buy them aren't hurting anyone by doing so, so I don't really have a problem with it.

Oh, worse things have come out of Japan. Body horror hentai, for example. I don't know who the target market is exactly for anime mutant porno, but it sure ain't me. And besides, it's not like I'm gonna sever all ties with Japan, I still owe them 80 bucks.
