End of an era: Tokyopop shutting down US publishing division

Founded in 1997, Tokyopop and its founder Stu Levy were at the forefront of the manga revolution in the US, introducing such hits as Sailor Moon, Chobits and Love Hina to the US market in the “unflipped” format for the first time.

Sales surged as the manga bookstore revolution took over in the early part of the last decade. An ambitious program of publishing original manga by creators from around the world —many of them barely out of the teenaged readership years themselves —proved controversial and ultimately saw only a handful of successful franchises but introduced a new generation of creators to the comics scene.

In February, a last round of lay-offs had reduced the company to a mere 6 employees… making the shut down all but inevitable.

Tokyopo’s statement is below, and a personal statement from Levy below that.

I never read much manga or of their manga, but they didn't butcher theirs. Unlike another company that went bankrupt.

This will be sad to see them go. While I'm not the fan of everything that they did (their Initial D dub was horrid), they brought a lot of great Manga to the US, and I hope that someone will at least keep some of their titles in print in the future.

What will happen to Hetalia? Well, it's so popular that I'm sure it gets picked up, but really, this is pretty sad...

What about the Warriors manga? I know its a english one, but will they never get published? Is this how the issues like this work?

I'm actually curious about that as well. I take it Vicky will find a new publisher for it. TokyoPop was just a platform for releasing the stories and she had her own artist working on the Manga.

I wonder who she'd pick, though I doubt it will change much of how the manga stories sound cheesier than the actual stories. :S (Just my personal opinion)

WHAT?! This *can't* be real :(
It's really sad to hear this. TokyoPop has allowed people that didn't speak Japanese to enjoy Japanese manga in a legal way.

Damn, that sucks. Some of the manga I have bought are still running ;_;. They were my first introduction of manga too. It's sad to see them go.

not to mention was one of the first "known names" in the business.

this is sad to hear. i had actually been wondering what was keeping them afloat after losing all the Kodansha licenses... i guess not a whole lot barring a handful of titles. i'm not sure if i'm even following any TP series right now, which is a shame, because in their day they translated some great manga ;__; hopefully the good titles still published by them won't get lost in the abyss and will be picked up by other companies, as was the case with a lot of the Kodansha licenses.

One has to wonder if they'll let all upcoming releases be available first before going under?
