I know very little about Dragonball but... I just gotta see this to see how much they're gonna change and how much it'll alienate people. XD Hell, who knows, maybe if you pretend the source material doesn't exist, it may even turn out to be somewhat not horrible. It could be the next Super Mario Bros. movie (which rocks).

    Also, Goku's hot.

Ooh I loved the SMB movie when I was 4. I thought it was so funny. Too bad I've aged nearly 13 years since then.

What I'll do is buy a ticket to another movie and then sneak into this one :D

Is it just me, or is the movie not looking as cruddy as it did 6 months ago?

The only thing im worried about is that it wont capture the lightheartedness of the original series, and instead becomes a serious action film.

It's called an opinion. I honestly don't think it looks as bad as people make it out to be. Chatwin's acting is a bit stale and Piccolo's a bit of a forced villain, but other than that, it looks decent. Actually, it looks more like a parody of cheesy kung-fu flicks, and lest we forget the director's known for pulling it off well.

If you think Dragonball is worthy of an accurate adaptation, you're kinda missing the point. As I've said, to adapt means to change, so it doesn't have to be accurate. Look at countless American comics or books in general; this sort of thing has happened before, it's yielded good results, and it's honestly no big deal. It's supposed to change things, that's the whole point.

You can't really expect them to put the whole Piccolo arc on screen without changing it whatsoever. If we put everything from the manga on there, the film's running time would be absurdly long, we'd have loads of subplots, and too many characters to keep track of. In a manga, you can re-read it in your leisure time; you can't in a film. This is loosely based off the Dragonball series, but is set in its own world.

To be fair, if you want to complain about the flaws in the trailer, or eventually the film, you can track them down to the original manga; let's face it, it had unintentionally cheesy dialogue, ridiculous and unnecessary scenes, even badly performed fights. Any complaint you might have was done in Dragonball first.

If you want to argue the whole Sin City, Watchmen point; in all cases, they're far superior to Dragonball. Really, what were you expecting with a live-action Dragonball? I'm sorry if I've been rude to any of you, but I'd like to know, what you were expecting with this film?

But there's a point where you can't argue that the huge number of changes are just a victim of adaptation. Something like Oolong and Pu'ar or Goku's flying cloud is understandable because it would be difficult to include them in the movie without it looking utterly ridiculous. Things like having the Dragonballs being the product of Piccolo's good side or Goku actually acting like Goku instead of generic self-doubting cliche man are not.

THAT'S what's getting people so upset; change for the sake of change.

Sin City looked just like a comic book (off of which it was based, right?)
A really, really ridiculously violent comic book.

    I enjoyed it at least.

I'm not exactly happy with everything about the movie, however I'm looking forward to it and expect to enjoy it. It may not exactly be the Dragonball I know and love, although I'll always have it here with me, and no live action adaption can take that away. (And "The Magic Begins" is proof of that. I have no doubt that the new movie will outshine that movie in every possible way. :P [Besides, I also enjoyed The Magic Begins. And the Super Mario Bros movie too. >_>])

I'm totally planning on giving this movie a chance myself when it comes to theaters, although I hope that it will be as humorous as the anime and manga that it's being made from.

This movie is actually looking a hell of a lot better than it did before. The first (real) trailer is now playing in theatres, and can be viewed at http://www.dragonballthemovie.com/. Check out the way that the stars are moving around inside of the dragon balls! I'm loving all the attention that's been put into all these little details.

And yes, Piccolo is now green. Very green.

The Dragonball Movie will be saved if these things will happen

    1) The Characters give an awesome aerial battle
    2) Goku gives a convincing Kamehameha "wave". Idon't expect a beam, but a wave will do fine.
    3) We get to see the Eternal Dragon
    4) We get to see a hint of Piccolo Jr.(with a cape!)

I'll give it my wholehearted support if at least one of these happens. Otherwise dump it into the trash because its just a Bulletproof Monk ripoff!

Dragonball really didn't have any areal battles, it was basically before anyone could fly... but if I remember right, I guess Goku did learn how at that point (with piccolo)

Apparently in the trailer, at least #2 happens. As for #1, like bell02 said, Goku can't fly yet (maybe jump really high). He uses Flying Nimbus even into the Saiyan saga. IIRC, he doesn't really start "flying" (not just jumping or whatever) until after he trains with King Kai.

What's a DRAGON-ball movie without a dragon? The battles of Piccolo Daimao in DB were in air plus those in early DBZ. Yes Transport was by Nimbus but fighting: all aerial.

So, now it's been confirmed that this movie is getting an all-star Japanese dub, is there anyone out there starting to feel more inclined to watch the Japanese edition of this with subtitles rather than the original US release?

The Japanese dub cast includes amongst others the voice talents of...
Goku: Yamaguchi Kappei - Ranma Saotome, Inuyasha, Shinichi Kudo/Conan and L
Bulma: Hirano Aya - Does Suzumiya Haruhi really need introduction at this point?
Master Roshi: Isobe Tsutomu - Mostly does Television Drama, so probably not well known here.
Yamcha: Egawa Hisao - Maki Shinichi from Slam Dunk, Android 14 from Dragonball Z, and Falco Lombardi from Nintendo's Star Fox games
Chichi: Koshimizu Ami - Tsukamoto Tenma, Kallen Stadtfeld/Kōzuki Karen, Horo
Picolo: Ōtsuka Hōchū - Probably best known here as Jiraiya in Naruto, and also responsible for a lot of Japanese dubs of American produced material including playing James Bond twice, Aragon in Lord of the Rings, Agent Smith in the Matrix films, Data in Star Trek, John Doggett in X Files, and (for some reason I can't quite fathom) Captain Planet.
Mai: Kaida Yūko - Ryomo Shimei in Ikkitosen, Tachibana Izumi in Kujibiki Unbalance, Ishima Ryuuken in Maria+Holic.
