You know, one good form of Fanservice is when you actually like the character (male or female) being sexualized. Like Cutey Honey who's a fun female heroine and can kick ass clothes or none. She's not just a talking pair of boobs.

For me, it's entirely a matter of the show. If a show is an outright fanservice/ecchi show, I don't mind it at all (like HighSchool DxD New which I am watching at the moment). If however, it's part of a larger show (such as Fairy Tail) and starts to detract from the story, then excessive amounts can start to annoy me.

Basically, I go to the fanservice stuff for my fanservice and I go for other stuff for other stuff.

There is WAY too much, and I'm sick of it.

The anime series I watch are almost entirely plot-driven ones. I tend to watch a lot of series intended for younger children since they don't have fanservice. Hamtaro, for example, is devoid of it.

There is way too much. And traveling/fighting clothes should be practical and actually cover you.

Plot? Where we're going, we won't need plot!

Seriously, it doesn't take a genius to see the producers thinking, "Hmmm, somehow I don't think such a 'dull show' is gonna sell. I GOT IT! Huge boobs solves everything!"

    You like Popsicles?

Yes, they try to get you all hot and bothered over a popsicle. That's not sexy and I don't think I'll ever see popsicle the same way.

We clearly need MORE fan service.

In seriousness it doesn't bother me. You gotta have some fan service though.

I don't have a problem with it either as long as it isn't too much and when I say that I mean that about the girls only. It's rare to see any kind of fanservice of guys unless the anime is centered around having a bunch of goodlooking guys and even then its rare. Its fine when its not overdone and actually made use of like in Aquarion Evol when the characters actually rip parts of their clothes off in one episode for the purpose of fighting better, and at other times its just used as comic relief. However animes that just toss it in just for the purpose of tossing it in with no purpose to them is what annoys me. Its not even accurate since 1) very few woman actually have breasts that big and 2) everything is overdone. No breasts jiggle as much as anime portrays them as and it just makes it more difficult to watch when its just there to be there.

If it makes sense for the character(s), setting and plot, fanservice can be good in moderation - bonus points if it respects the laws of physics, especially in the case of females. I also have no problem with excessive fanservice if the anime makes it clear that's a big part of its identity and that liking it is a factor in the enjoyment of the show. I mean, people don't watch porn just for the plot, for example. My biggest problem with fanservice is that it seems to have gotten too prominent lately, resulting in pointless fanservice that doesn't really benefit some of the shows that use it. It does sell, though, so there isn't much that can be done about it I suppose.

I have to admit, I don't mind a minute amount of fanservice, but there's a certain point in which I draw the line, such as the (often unnecessarily) busty character's chest practically bursting out of her swimsuit.

I see it as a double standard within the industry; basically, the executives (and by extension, the writer(s) and director) are assuming the average viewer is a heterosexual male whom wouldn't appreciate such a scene, and are also assuming that any female viewers can just be satisfied with a bishounen.

We get as many bishounens as we get girls with big boobs xD neither of which are realistic or at least not as realistic as they try to make it seem.

    Mostly the point.

People seem to be more open with pretty girls being all cute and sexy in anime and are generally okay or at least indifferent with them. However, even the slightest sparkly moment of a cast of pretty boys get immediately labeled as "gay" and are received negatively from the viewers (who are probably usually males).
I've seen a lot of those negative comments usually on anime that are obviously created for the female audience. I remember a few years ago, when Ouran High School Host Club aired. Whenever Hikaru and Kaoru were being friendly to impress their female clients as part of their service, I've seen massive comments on calling them 'twincest', 'gay', and quite a few curses were included as well. That's fanservice for the girls who like pretty boys being friendly with each other, not necessarily because they like homosexual themes (and what was even 'gay' about it? I enjoyed those characters, but I never considered shipping them). Prince of Tennis had been victim to quite a lot of negative views regarding pretty boys and rivalries. Not to mention Kuroko no Basket as well, up till the most recent Free!. I've been appalled to see reviews saying 'why do sports anime have unrealistically pretty boys in the show'.

Isn't it obvious? It's because the show is for females. Anime for females don't always mean it has to feature girly girls and romance as themes, and magical girls and stuff. Just as how a lot of guys enjoyed watching Madoka Magica and the like, girls can be interested in sports anime as well - and the creators are simply making the characters attractive to gain more female fans. Taking off a shirt and showing muscular bodies are one way to get the female audience to like the show. Being friendly with each other and cherishing memories are also part of fanservice - tugging at the female audience' hearts so that they go d'aaaawwwwwwwwwwww and become fans - which will lead to buying their merch.

Simply put - fanservice is one way to advertise the anime to the viewers, and let them spread word to gain more fans who will probably like the fanservice as well. It's more or less the same way how female characters show fanservice-y scenes for their male viewers as well - to gain more fans.

People need to realize that the anime industry are also targeting the female audience to make money - and fanservice of male characters have more or less increased recently in a lot of genres. I really wish people would stop calling the fanservice of male characters as "gay", and simply accept them as part of the way the anime industry is trying to sell their stuff to the females.

That way, we can get more anime with more bishounens.
