Discuss how 4Kids saved and gave new life to many anime such as DBZ, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh etc.

4Kids gave DBZ new life? I wasn't aware that they dubbed the series; just that they were given distribution rights for it. I don't think DBZ needed saving anyway so I don't know what to make of that :[

I'm pretty harsh when it comes to 4Kids so I don't want anything big to slip. I will applaud their Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds dub though; it's actually really good compared to the Yu-Gi-Oh GX dub.

You're going to have to be more specific, YourGod. In what ways do you feel like 4Kids "saved anime?"

4kids made anime more appropriate for western audiences, thus localizing anime and boosting it in popularity. Before 4kids, anime was a dying fad. After 4kids, it was one of the biggest animation industries.

Anime was a dying fad before 4kids? I find that hard to believe; care to back that statement up with some evidence?

The localisation of anime is a highly complex issue, but you should keep something in mind, something that was evident even back in the days of Sailor Moon and DiC:

Changes and edits are not solely to make the series more "accessible" to Western audiences. That is one of the reasons, and if you want to get technical, dubbing and subbing are both forms of localisation that make anime more accessible.

But another very important reason is keeping sponsors and parents happy. This is the reason that a lot of content is removed, particularly when a series is broadcast on TV. Things like Sailor Moon's many gay characters, or James' inflatable breasts, or Ash having a gun pointed at his astonished face... all of these were removed not because they were "inaccessible" in any way, but because our beloved moral guardians would have gone apeshit about them.

I used to get very annoyed about the frankly homophobic edits that were made to Sailor Moon, a series very close to my heart. I still do, but I don't blame the localisation team, who were simply doing what they felt had to be done to get the show on the air. Far better to focus your ire on the forces in society that are actually responsible for these prejudices.

EDIT: Also... I'm pretty sure 4kids were dubbing anime when interest in the medium was at its height.

So?????? If 4kids never did what they did, most anime would not even reach the shores of America! Do you not see that we Americans would not have convenient access to anime if it wasn't for 4kids????

The only good thing 4kids has done so far as saving anime is Toonzaki.

If anything I praise 4kids for exactly what you say, but once you get past it, they haven't done a whole lot of good things until recently.

Not so much a dying fad, but the American interest in Japanese cartoons definitely skyrocketed at the time Funimation's Dragon Ball Z, Dic's Sailor Moon and 4Kids' Pokemon started out.
    So.

Sorry man but anime wasn't a dying fad, if all I think 4Kids practically butchered anime, except the Yu Gi Oh 5Ds dub that was good. Also Dragonball wasn't dubbed by 4Kids it was dubbed by Funanimation another anime company who has dubbed a lot of animes without having to butcher them like 4Kids frankly I'm glad 4Kids didn't get Dragonball Z.

The only show 4Kids hasn't butchered is Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh 5Ds and Shaman King.

The original Yu-Gi-Oh wasn't horribly butchered... not to the level of One Piece, at least.
