A lot of those late 80s/early 90s cartoons made to cash in on video games/movies were silly in their entirety. They made cartoons of The Legend of Zelda and of The Karate Kid movie series. Guess what both have in common? Both of them were cancelled after one season. The latter was in fact worse than the Jaden Smith remake. Few people remember the Karate Kid cartoon - I was honestly surprised that the Nostalgia Critic knew it existed (I disagree with his praise for the remake, but that's another story). A lot of people have never even heard of the Zelda cartoon. The worst was probably the Back to the Future cartoon. I watched a little and decided that it was so cheesy, it made The Super Mario Bros. Super Show look awesome.
For a while, it seemed like that every popular film/video game was being made into a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon. I think the popularity of edgier cartoons like Tiny Toon Adventures, Ren & Stimpy, and Rugrats thankfully killed this trend for good. I think the reason why Pokemon worked is because it was made with Nintendo's active support, rather than just letting people make a cartoon with little resemblance to its source.
