RIP Amy. I was never a fan of hers, but this really shocked me when I found out, and 27 is much too young to die.

BBC News - Amy Winehouse found dead, aged 27

Singer Amy Winehouse, 27, has been found dead at her north London home.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that a 27-year-old woman had died in Camden and that the cause of death was as yet unexplained.

London Ambulance Service said it had been called to the flat at 1554 BST and sent two vehicles but the woman died.

The troubled singer had a long battle with drink and drugs which overshadowed her recent musical career. She pulled out of a comeback tour last month.

Jeered at gig
Last month, the north Londoner pulled out of the European tour after she was jeered at the first gig in Serbia for appearing too drunk to perform.

For 90 minutes, she mumbled through parts of songs and at times left the stage - leaving her band to fill in.

Winehouse had won widespread acclaim, aged 20, with her 2003 debut album, Frank.

But it was 2006's Back to Black which brought her worldwide stardom, winning five Grammy Awards.

Rumours of Winehouse's death began circulating on Twitter on Saturday evening. Among those to comment was former prime minister's wife Sarah Brown.

"Sad sad news of Amy Winehouse - great talent, extraordinary voice, and tragic death, condolences to her family," she tweeted.

Singer and presenter Myleene Klass tweeted: "OMG. Amy Winehouse. Exceptional talent and really nice lady. RIP."

BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton wrote: "Can not believe the news. Amy was a special girl. The saddest news."

Daily Telegraph rock critic Neil McCormick said he was "utterly shocked" at her death.

Last appearance
He said she had appeared focused when giving an "incredible performance" for a recent studio recording of a duet with Tony Bennett.

"It's deeply sad. It's the most completely tragic waste of talent that I can remember," he added.

The troubled singer made her last public appearance on Wednesday night when she joined her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield on stage at The Roundhouse in Camden.

The singer danced with Bromfield and encouraged the audience to buy her album in the impromptu appearance before leaving the stage.

At the time she pulled out of the tour, her spokesman had said everyone wanted to do everything to "help her return to her best".

This is a sad day. While not unexpected, she was a talented singer, and to die so young is such a tragic shame.

I wonder when her autopsy results get in?

If it's a murder, then whoever did it will not get away with it!

No surprise really. As tragic as it is, it's amazing she lived this long, considering her life-tyle.

Bet you it was drugs. Not only is it Amy Winehouse, but the majority of deaths like this turn out to be drugs.

Amy, may your soul rest in peace.

Many people see the you that is always blown up by the press, the drug taking and crazy woman. However, your voice is a fight against all the bad words about you. Nobody deserves a death at a young age of 27.

A true loss of not just a wonderful voice but a wonderful, true person.

My thoughts are with your family Amy and Rest In Peace.

Seriously, what is it with drug-addict musicians dropping off at age 27? Shit's eerie, man.

Never liked her music, and the rampant drug use never exactly appealed to me...but I'm a bit sad to see she's dead. Had such potential. Was hoping she'd pop up and do something to interest me. That and her being the same age as me makes me suddenly feel very old.

Better late than never. You all will be missed.

Yesterday was the 10 year anniversary of Aaliyah's passing. She was an R&B artist in the 90s and was beginning a film career as well in the early 2000s. She was only 22 years old when she died in a tragic plane accident after shooting her final music video for Rock the Boat. According to Billboard she is the 10th most successful R&B artist of the past 25 years and 27th most successful R&B artist overall.

Anyway, I still can't believe it's been 10 years. I remember when I first heard about her death, I cried a lot. I was really young. She was one of the first R&B artists I ever really liked so, it was hard at the time for me to accept it. She left behind some great music and some pretty decent films too. I'm sure if she were still alive today she'd have even better music and better film roles. She progressively got better with each album and each movie (even though she only did 2, I think her role in Queen of the Damned was a better performance... too bad the movie itself sucked) It's such a shame really, she could have done a lot more. But, it is what it is.
