    Default IGN's top 100 RPGs

As some of us may know, IGN creates a variety of top 100 lists and just last month, they released a compilation of a top 100 role-playing video games list, twenty per day over the course of five days (I wanted to share this then, but I've had problems with my laptop...) I know there are some of us on this forum - including myself - who are into rpgs and I thought this would be a good article to share - provided it doesn't cause any flamewars. I'm sure not all of us will agree wih this list 100% (we all have different tastes, after all), but I am sure we'll all at least appreciate most of the choices listed.

Final Fantasy VII isn't number one? This list is worthless.

...Just ONE Fire Emblem game? And no Pokemon Platinum? And Super Mario RPG, a god awful game, has such a high ranking? I agree, this list sucks.

This list is pretty awful. Where's Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story? Why does Pokemon Red/Blue outrank Pokemon Black/White despite having broken mechanics that were later fixed in the later 16 years? Why isn't Xenoblade higher for redefining the JRPG genre?

the design of that article is godawful. I'd rather just have a plain text list.

I'm not surprised that KH, KH2, and TWEWY were on the list, they are very good games. But where's White knight Chronicles?

Some ranks were well-deserved, but I pretty much rolled my eyes when I looked at this list. I mean, this is IGN we're talking about.

Well, as far as Mario RPGs are concerned, I only played Browser's Inside Story and I thought it was really fun. The turns didn't feel boring, since they were highly interactive, but I'll admit I got tired of fighting weak creatures (what RPG doesn't have at least some grinding?), which wouldn't be a huge deal if it was something like, say, Pokémon, but in this case I had to stay attentive. At least the creatures were, for the most part, easy to avoid.

Regarding the list itself, I always take these with a pinch of salt. Reviewing is already so subjective, let alone rank games from among a pool that goes into the thousands, if not millions. I disagree with some aspects and placements, and that one heavy page at a time layout does not work well indeed, but it serves as a way to help people who might be new to the genre discover some games they might be interested in before doing further research - that's how I've been using these lists, anyway.

Where is KoToR II? That's pretty much all I have to say about this list, really.

I'm guessing KotOR II didn't make the list because it was rushed out the door before it was finished (thanks to LucasArts) and, therefore, too buggy and incomplete for IGN to consider adding it to a top list. KotOR I making the list was good enough for me, though.

What surprised me more than anything - next to a Pokemon game set getting higher than top 30, let alone fourth place - was the lack of Dragon Age: Origins; I know that game received massive critical acclaim from both critics and RPG fans alike. I suppose IGN must've figured Baldur's Gate I & II were enough to cover that. I still need to play all of those games. :D

Mm, guys, this is heading a bit off-topic. Instead of simply making you drop the discussion, do you want me to move your Mario RPG posts and make a new thread for that line of games?

    ^ Will do.

Anyway, the lack of the Last Story and Pandora's Tower is quite understandable because they haven't been released nationally yet.

KoToR isn't a bad game by any virtue, but even the sequel unmodded is better than the first game. Even with the cut outs, it's still a far better story/concept with better characters and creation/upgrading system (and combat, for that matter). Too bad everything in SW has to be fucking black and white, fucking great.

Agreed. The absence of DA:O from this list is baffling. Two Mass Effect, but no Origins?

That, and BW instead of Platinum is really an odd choice. Platinum in 2009 (2008) was much better than BW in 2011 (2010) if you ask me.
