When I gave Joy Division a listen, I thought that their instrumentals were very nice, but their vocalist just ruined it all for me. I can't stand his singing style, and I thought that if Joy Division had a vocalist that better fit my tastes, I would like them a lot more. So I absolutely adore my favorite band, Radiohead's cover of "Ceremony".

"Twist and Shout" by The Beatles is one of my favorite examples of this. The best examples of a cover truly topping the original is when most people don't even know it's a cover.

    Here are some others:

    "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton
    "Respect" by Aretha Franklin
"I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston
"Istanbul" by They Might Be Giants

    The list is endless, though.

GNR's version of "Since I don't have You".
    erm.
Muse's version of "Can't Take My Eyes of You"
And the covers for "Toxic" and "Milkshake" is in the debatable status,

I don't listen to this kind of music much anymore, but one example I can think of is Eddie Murphy's version of "I'm a Believer" when he voiced Donkey in Shrek. Definitely liked that one better than the original. Didn't know Eddie could sing so well either.

The one that comes to mind for me is Anthrax's cover of Joe Jackson's "Got the Time".

I reckon this cover of Rocketeer beats the original.

Paul Kelly and Angus Stone's cover of "Four Seasons In One Day" on He Will Have His Way, Bubsy Marou's cover of "Better Be Home Soon" off the same album could qualify too (unlike the bland-to-awful rest of the album. Jimmy Barnes covering "Message To My Girl": How do you screw that up?). Then again, the originals were never really my favourite Crowded House songs, though they certainly weren't bad or anything.

Speaking of Paul Kelly, there's also his rendition of "Little Red Corvette" he did for Andrew Denton's Musical Challenge. He makes it so much his own, you'd forget it was ever a Prince song.

I just gave Paul Kelly's cover a listen. I notice that he cut out several of the more racy lyrics (it is a song about f**king, when all is said and done), and didn't even do the "YOU! MUST! BE! A! LIMOUSINE!" bit...which, IMO, is by far the best part of that song. Ergo, Prince wins.

I think that the Isley Brothers did an excellent job of covering Summer Breeze, originally by Seals and Croft. I prefer the Isley Brothers version, maybe because I have a proclivity for funk/soul/disco music, I'm not really sure. At any rate, I think it surpasses the original version.

I really like Pomplamoose's cover of Beat it by Micheal Jackson. Oh, and the Blank's version of Hey Ya. (I like their cover and the original about the same though.

Eh, I prefer Dolly Parton's original. That song works better for me when it's full of emotion and less stylized.

So, covers I like - I don't know if I think they're all actually better than the original, but these are ones I enjoy more:

"All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix, originally Bob Dylan (as everyone else said)
"Take Me to the River" by Talking Heads, originally Al Green
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by Devo, originally The Rolling Stones (unpopular opinion, I know!)
"Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer, originally Eddie Cochran
Jimi Hendrix's version of The Star-Spangled Banner
The Animals' version of "The House of the Rising Sun"
Hell, a lot of rock covers of traditional blues or folk songs
"Dancing with Myself" by Nouvelle Vague, originally Generation X
"I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, originally The Strangeloves
"Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" by Urge Overkill, originally Neil Diamond (aka the one on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack)
"Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by They Might Be Giants, originally The Four Lads
and as much as I hate to admit this, the Glee version of Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs"

And some I think bring an interesting approach to the song(s) even though I like the originals better or I'm not sure which one I prefer:

    Every other Nouvelle Vague cover
"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, originally Marvin Gaye
"Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth Wind and Fire, originally The Beatles
"Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by Amy Winehouse, originally The Shirelles
"A Girl Called Sandoz" by The Smashing Pumpkins, originally The Animals
"Eleanor Rigby" by Aretha Franklin, originally The Beatles
"Walking With A Ghost" by The White Stripes, originally Tegan and Sara
"Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by Amy Winehouse, originally The Shirelles
The Byrds' various covers of Bob Dylan songs
Petra Haden's a cappella version of The Who Sell Out

I'm sure I will think of more later.

I've heard two covers of "Umbrella" that are much better than the original.

Oh? And what might these be, if you still know which ones they are?~

I personally love Gumi's cover of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's Candy Candy, and SeeU's of Tsukema Tsukeru by the same artist. KPP's songs get a bit sickly-sweet for me sometimes, but the vocaloid covers are so refreshing and cute in a different way.

I absolutely hate Manson, but I really like Marylin Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). (Ack, I can't remember the original artist!) Also, I am a bit biased, but I think that Shinedown's cover of Simple Man is better than the original. (I think it's a cover!)

I think the bands are called The Baseballs (rock 'n roll) and Lillasyster (hard-rock).
