Taither watched the Durant act aggressively, so he decided to act. He reached for a Pokeball at his belt and said to me, “Looks like this guy made up my mind for me. I’m going to catch it.”

He tossed the Pokeball in the air, and with a bright flash of crimson light a Garchomp appeared. Garchomp were a Ground and Dragon Power that were fast and deadly at close range. The only problem with them was that they had a four times weakness to Ice attacks, but Taither wouldn’t have to worry about that here. Carchomp was a mixture between a velociraptor and hammer head shark, in my opinion. He was dark blue with a fin on its back, and its head was shaped like its cousin the hammer head shark. It had a wicked looking set of claws on its limbs and feet.

“Alright, Chompy, let’s start off with a Dual Chop followed by a Fire Fang!”

I figured Dual Chop, being a Dragon type move, wouldn’t do too much damage because Durant was part Bug and Steel, making the attack neutral. But the Fire Fang would do a solid amount of damage because Durant would have a four times weakness to Fire attacks. Granted, Garchomp didn’t get STAB with the Fire Fang, and Durant had semi high defense, but all that was countered by Garchomp’s high attack.

As the claws of Garchomp started to glow with Dragon Energy, Taither called out, “Use the dirt ground to your advantage, Chompy! You’re in an advantage with it!”

The claws of Garchomp turned dark purple in color as a coat of flame suddenly sprouted around the numerous teeth of Garchomp. The Pokemon growled and dived into the dirt, like it was nothing more than water. The Pokemon easily started to burrow towards the Durant, its fin and head being the only things showing, which gave the Pokemon the appearance of a shark on dry land.

The Durant watched the Carchomp speeding towards and pulled its legs underneath its body as it curled up into a ball. A flash crossed through its body and its gray body shone just a tad brighter in the sunlight, almost giving it a glossy look. Carchomp popped out of the earth a moment later and racked its claws across the body of Durant, but the claws simply bounced off, barely doing any damage at all. Garchomp snarled in rage and moved to bite down on Durant with its Fire Fang attack, but Durant whipped its head across and delivered a solid blow to Garchomp, knocking the Pokemon back and away from it.

Despite the fierce Iron Head attack from Durant, Garchomp managed to strike the Durant on the side of its torso with the Fire Fang, dishing damage, but not as much as it normally would have. Garchomp rose to its feet and faced the much small Pokemon down.

I watched as my Pokemon went toe-to-toe with the small ant-like creature. They both seemed to have difficulty with each other, exchanging blows where it counted. Chomp grazed the side of the Durant with his claw, barely doing any real damage. The Fire Fang landed, though, dealing quite a bit more. Chomp took a decent blow from the small Pokemons' iron head, but shook it off as quickly as possible. The two Pokemon stared each other down while I hurried to think up my next move. I had to do something that would cause a significant amount of damage while avoiding more to Chomp. He was a tough dragon type, but he could still take a beating. This particular Pokemon was like my Scizor, and resisted dragon-type attacks. I would have to stick to ground and fire, then.

"Alright Chomp, lets go with an Earthquake and hit him with another Fire Fang while he's off-balance!"

I knew it was a stretch for a bug-type with six legs to get knocked off balance by some rumbling ground, but it was still a possibility. One that would help the Fire Fang land a direct hit, ontop of doing some damage in the meantime. It was a rocky area, so maybe a bit of a shakedown will send some rocks falling onto the small wild Pokemon and do some extra damage. I know it is against park rules to damage the environment, so I would have to do some damage control once all this was initiated. All I needed was some lucky falls and I could pin down this exotic Pokemon and eventually add him to my team.

"Chomp, make sure to disorient him by swimming through the dirt again when you go in for the Fire Fang!"

It seemed to be an effective maneuver last time, so hopefully it would work again. I try not to rely on the same tactic too many times, but I had to go with what worked, since I didn't have any strong fire-types with me, and Garchomp is the only one capable of taking this guy down relatively quickly. With that command, Garchomp started to prepare for the Fire Fang, his mouth glowing fiery red, and a bit of flames coming out from the corners of his mouth. He stamped his foot a couple times, obviously in preparation to cause a powerful quake to damage his enemy. Ground-type energy filled his legs, causing a bit of a dirt-colored aura to surround him as he concentrated on his innate powers. My partners eyes turned completely white, signifying the sheer power emanating through his body while he powered up.

Taither didn’t seem pleased with the way the attacks had gone, but neither was he upset. He recognized that he still had a good amount of time to swing things completely in his direction. It was just the opening salvo of attacks and much more could be done before the end of the battle.

“Alright, Chomp, let’s go with an Earthquake and hit him with another Fire Fang while he’s off-balance!”

This wasn’t a too bad strategy, as Earthquake being a Ground move was supereffective was against Steel, but Bug was resistance to it, making the damage be neutral. Fire Fang of course would do a good deal of damage, even with the Iron Defense Durant had used. But what really worried me was the Earthquake move. It was a really strong Ground move, but it was almost never seen in the National Park because in some areas it could do a lot of damage to the environment. The good news for Taither was that he was in Deckbi, an area with an active volcano. Active volcanos meant active earthquakes, so one more wouldn’t make a difference unless it was a doozy.

Garchomp closed his eyes, and the dirt around him to started to rise and circle the Ground and Dragon Pokemon. One look and any Pokemon could tell that the Garchomp was channeling his Ground power.

The Durant began to click his mandibles as it too recognized the attack. It rubbed its legs together and a brilliant beam of light shot forth and bathed the Garchomp. It died down a moment later and the Garchomp didn’t seem too affected by it. The Garchomp growled and brought a clawed foot down hard.

Immediately I felt a small rumble in the earth as the quake spread from Garchomp. The Durant hunkered down and allowed the attack to pass through it, dealing damage of course, but not disrupting the Durant’s footing.

When the Earthquake faded I looked up to see Garchomp already in the earth speeding towards Durant. Just before the Garchomp reached Durant, a brightly colored shield materialized around the Pokemon. Garchomp’s teeth bit down on the shield, but were repulsed easily by the Protect.

Garchomp snarled at the Bug Pokemon, but everyone knew it couldn’t do anything until the Protect faded. Still snarling, Garchomp retreated.

    @AmericanTreeFrog

OoC: Sorry for the late reply, college and work and all. x.x Let me know if you still want to run this with me. I'm done after this capture.

The small metallic ant let loose a blinding light of energy towards Garchomp, who was just about ready to cause a ferocious earthquake. The light barely did anything to Chompy, who barely even realized it was an attack. Shrugging it off, the large blue landshark stomped down with all his might, causing the ground to rumble from the force behind his thick hind leg. Boulders fell from the higher parts of the mountain and caused the pebbles around our feet to jump as if springing to life. The Durant seemed like it was fine, its' six legs keeping it pretty sturdy against the ground shaking. Almost immediately, Garchomp was in the ground, zig-zagging through the earth towards the small ant. His teeth burst into flames, making him look like a torpedo that was on fire. sadly, the small steel-type protected itself, a shield of energy blocking the attack from going through. Garchomp bounced off like he was nothing, recovering and retreating, letting out angered snarls towards its opponent.

"Alright Chomp, lets go at this different. Start with a Fire Fang and follow-up with a Brick Break!"

I called out to my partner, who nodded in agreement. Fire Fang would have to be my main attack against this little guy, since almost nothing will do significant damage towards a bug/steel types. Garchomp dove into the ground again, circling around the wild Pokemon as if he was an actual shark. If he was charging an attack, you couldn't tell by the dirt spraying as his dorsal fin parted it, being the only part of him you could see. The Durant seemed to be setting up its own attacks, but nothing I could make out for sure yet, and our ranger seemed to be watching intently, waiting to see what would happen next and how the tides of battle would shift. I could only hope it goes well for Garchomp and I, so we can add a new steel-type to our team.

With hurried wings, Debrota, my faithful Togekiss, bore me to the summit of the great volcano Mount Deckbi. Apparently Ranger Gaius had been called away from his duties here - something about a Ledian infestation in the Botanic Gardens? - and so I would be filling in for him on what little remained of one Taither's expedition. "Quickly," I urged Debrota quietly. Leaving any Trainer alone wasn't a good idea - not because all of them are idiots, but because wild Pokemon are unpredictable and without a Ranger present things can get out of hand pretty easily. Debrota put on a bit more speed, and in moments I was landing on the mountainside.

"All right, Chomp," I heard voice calling, "lets go at this different. Start with a Fire Fang and follow-up with a Brick Break!" I looked up to see a Garchomp and a Durant glaring at each other; behind the Garchomp stood a tall, dark-haired young man who watched the battle intently. Quickly I called Debrota back to her Pokeball and moved toward the Trainer, muttering a word of greeting as I stepped out of anything remotely resembling Garchomp's way.

Garchomp circled the Durant in a classic predatory dance; his movements sprayed a lot of soot and dust, obscuring him from view and giving him an all-in-all ominous appearance. It was hard to see what he was doing, although a faint gleam of flame could be caught within his parted jaws.

Moving with incredible speed, Chomp the Garchomp lunged, his great maw open and alight with fire. Durant had no time to react; the dragon's teeth clamped down on the side of its metal body. It let out a tinny, wavering wail as the flames licked its steely hide. Chomp then stepped back, the attack completed, and lifted a fin, which began to glow bright white with power. He moved to bring the fin down right on Durant's head; however, this time Durant was more prepared. It lifted his head, its mandibles open, and bit down on Chomp's arm fin. Chomp narrowed his eyes, pushing harder, attempting to break Durant's iron grip. I could see a faint sheen of green glittering on Durant's jaws - Bug Bite. It was digging in, hard, and I noticed a faint trickle of bright red blood leaking from Chomp's skin.

Then, with an effort, Chomp brought his arm swinging down. The attack had been sorely hampered by Durant's interruption, but it was still powerful; Durant withdrew, shaking its head and clicking angrily to itself. It scratched at the ground with its barbed forelegs, burrowing beneath the earth. For a second I wondered if it was fleeing - but Durants are tenacious things, defenders of their territory no matter what, and I doubted it would just turn tail - or abdomen, as it were. It was more than likely setting up a Dig attack. I glanced at Taither, wondering what he'd do to protect his Pokemon, curious to see his style.

@VeloJello OoC: Sorry for the long wait, school kicked my ass and kept me from putting time into a post.

The attacks hit pretty well, in my honest opinion. Watching as Garchomp bit down on the cool metallic body of this viscious little ant, I could see that Garchomp was definitely making a dent. On the downside, though, he was taking quite a bit of damage. After quite a bit of furious movements from both Pokemon, they backed off from each other to get a breather. Garchomp looked like he was injured from the last attack, some deep red blood trickling down from the bug bite. To me it looked like a surface wound, and nothing to be too worried about, I raised Chompy to have a thick hide, and his Rough Skin definitely helped lighten incoming damage. Now all I had to do was try to figure out a way to take this spunky little Pokemon down without draining too much energy from Garchomp, who would need a good rest once we got out of this place.

While I thinking strategy, the Durant started to burrow underground, obviously hoping to get a digging attack in from below. It must not have realized it yet, but ground attacks are Garchomps specialty. He definitely wouldn't be fooled by such an attack anytime soon. Plus, I know how to counter moves that Garchomp knows. This was leaving the tiny steel-type open. I couldn't bank on it being this easy, so I would have to be cautious with how I did this. I would need to have Chompy do something to avoid any possible attack the enemy could use while underground. I couldn't pass up the chance to do major damage to it, either. This was going to be quite the challenge already. Damn me for not bringing in a solid fire-type to handle this. Only reason I didn't was because of the over-abundance of ground-types in the area. I never thought I would run into a steel-type that wouldn't be weak to Garchomp.

"Alright, Chomp, we're going to take this chance to really put the hurt on it. Use an Earthquake once it gets underground, and follow up with a Sand Tomb to force it to the surface prematurely!" I called out to my partner, knowing he will execute these moves precisely. My hopes was that in the tunnel, Durant was susceptible to the Earthquake, making it rattle around in the tunnel and cause some extra damage from that and the tunnels collapsing on it. Then a Sand tomb to drop some more of the earth onto it while it attempted to escape the tunnels. By the time it got to the surface, it would be pretty exhausted and hopefully close to being captured.

After a pause to gather his thoughts, Taither called out orders to Chomp: "Alright, Chomp, we're going to take this chance to really put the hurt on it. Use an Earthquake once it gets underground, and follow up with a Sand Tomb to force it to the surface prematurely!"

I nodded thoughtfully to myself. That was a good plan. Durant would take heavy damage from the Earthquake, and when it surfaced it would more than likely be somewhat dazed.

Durant was fully underground now, hidden beneath the earth. Chomp saw his chance and lifted one scaly foot before slamming it down with all of his strength. The ground immediately began to shake violently, causing the rock around us to rumble. There was no visible sign of Durant; however, I knew that it must be hurting. All that shaking would have definitely dropped some rocks on it.

Chomp darted toward Durant's hole, kicking up sand and debris and waving his arms to create a cyclone of sand. With a final push, he sent the funnel of earth into Durant's tunnel.

Durant reemerged at top speed seconds later, taking great breaths of air as though the collapse of its burrow had suffocated it. It gave Chomp a malevolent red-eyed glare before scuttling forward, the tips of its mandibles glowing with energy. Taither's plan had succeeded somewhat - Durant's steely hide had been scratched and bruised by Chomp's attacks; however, it seemed to be redoubling its battle efforts. Taither would have to act quickly if he wanted to save Chomp from a nasty bug bite.

The little ant-like Pokemon stood no chance against the combination Garchomp used, and was completely shaken by the powerful quake and being flooded with sand in its burrow. The digging attack failed miserably, and the shortage of fresh air in the tunnels forced the Durant back to the surface as quickly as possible. It gave a menacing glare at Garchomp, undoubtedly angry at the fact the battle shifted from a blow-for-blow battle to Garchomp having a lead and dealing some extensive damage to the metallic bug. Garchomp seemed to smirk at knowing he pissed off his opponent, and seemed fired up at the success of the strategy. It felt good that my Pokemon was happy with my choices in battle, and it definitely gave my Pokemon an energy boost.

Once it was back on the surface, the Durant started to dash towards Garchomp, mandibles glowing with power as it got ready to give Garchomp a nasty bug-bite. Even though Garchomps skin was rough and would hurt most other pokemon if they went for a contact attack, I don't think it would be very effective against cold steel. The only option I could think of would be to avoid the attack and save Garchomp some pain. Sadly, he doesn't know a whole lot of moves to completely avoid attacks, besides his raw speed. He was almost unparalleled in his speed, save a few Pokemon who trained further than we have. Knowing Durant doesn't have any real attacks to throw off Garchomp while underground, I decided that would be our best choice of action. Durant wasn't exactly well protected from below, so a good attack would hopefully flip it on its back and leave it vulnerable to a follow-up.

"Alright Garchomp, we have to avoid this one. Dig underground and get ready to use a dual chop on it when it lands on its back!" I called out to my partner, knowing this would be our best bet for a one-sided encounter again. The Durant seemed to lose its cool and toss its defense out the proverbial window once it got angry, so our best bet at keeping it down long enough to capture it would be to really make it mad. I just had to make sure that Garchomp doesn't take a direct hit, as the little bugs power might spike due to increased adrenaline. Hopefully, Garchomp can keep on his toes and avoid taking more damage so that we can finish this fight and add this pesky little guy to our team. Once they got over their grudge for this fight, they might actually make a good team with the right training. For now, I decided I needed to focus on the capture and not lose my cool. I had to stay level-headed and react quickly and wisely against this persistent foe.

As Durant charged, Taither called out quick command. "Alright Garchomp,” he called to the dual-type, “we have to avoid this one. Dig underground and get ready to use a Dual Chop on it when it lands on its back!”

Garchomp didn’t hesitate to obey. He crouched down, and tore through the earth in a whirlwind of flailing claws and flying dirt. Just before Durant’s gaping jaws closed, Garchomp vanished into a deep hole. The iron ant was left startled and confused - it was bold when angered, but it certainly wasn't dumb enough to venture into another Pokemon's burrow. It hesitated for a split second before closing its eyes and marshaling its defenses. Its hide flashed metallic white as it used another Iron Defense attack to brace itself for the inevitable.

Chomp burst out of the ground then, just to Durant's right so that the impact flipped the iron ant onto its back and exposed its vulnerable belly. With a thump, Chomp landed on one foot and pivoted, raising his fins high over his head and bringing them crashing down on Durant's abdomen. The insect let out a grating shriek of pain.

However, as Garchomp drew back his arms, Durant lunged and grabbed hold of them in its mandibles, biting down as hard as it could. Chomp let out a roar of pain as blood began to seep through his scales and trickle along his fins. He shook his arms furiously, sending Durant flying. It hit the ground with a series of metallic clanking sounds, before rising to its feet with a look of fury in its eyes. Durant was running low on energy, but it was far from backing down.
