When we came upon a Smoochum, Jesse decided to let the Pokémon decide for itself if she wanted to battle him or not. He tasked his Lopunny with asking Smoochum what her wishes were. Lopunny hopped over to the baby Pokémon and started to talk in its own native language. Even though I couldn’t understand what he was saying, I had an idea what the conversation was about.

A little while later, the Smoochum turned her head, with her nose stuck in the air. Then, it walked away from Jesse’s Lopunny and finally passed us. It seemed kind of weird when the Pokémon immediately switched from her snobby and sassy nature back to her original “happy-go-lucky” self and hopped in the direction opposite that of where we were going.

I shrugged at the Lopunny, who seemed kind of confused at Smoochum’s demeanor. That was the thing about baby Pokémon, they were very unpredictable, and you could never truly know what they were thinking.

“Well, let’s keep going,” I said as we restarted our trek towards the top of the mountain.

After a few minutes of walking, another Smoochum was walking in our direction. It felt like I was suffering from déjà vu, but the feeling was immediately gone when I realized that this particular Smoochum was a lighter pink that the one we had seen before. Her fur glistened in the evening sunlight.

“How about this one? You want it?” I asked Jesse again. Maybe the possibility of owning a shiny Jynx would entice him to battle.

The Smoochum, turning her head with her nose stuck in the air, walked away from Punpun and finally passed us, eyes closed and still smug. Then she immediately went back to skipping along her merry way.

Dee shrugged at Pun, who was completely confused at Smoochum’s demeanor. “Well, let’s keep going,” he said as we continued towards the top of the mountain.

After a few minutes of walking, another Smoochum was walking in our direction. This Smoochum was a lighter shade of pink and her head seemed to be more saturated. She almost seemed to sparkle as she walked.

“How about this one? You want it?” Dee asked me.

There’s something about shiny Pokemon. Punpun always was a hit with the ladies; maybe a shiny Smoochum would be a good addition.

“Yeah, let’s go Torzure!” I cried out. Hopefully Torzure will do better against this Pokemon.

My giant metal penguin shot out of his Pokeball and spun around a bit, trying to be showy.

“Torzure, start off with a Swagger attack. Show Smoochum your dashing good looks!”

My Empoleon grinned as he flexed his wings around. He started spinning, twirling his wings like a top before stopping right in front of the small Smoochum, winking at her.

Sure enough, the possibility of owning a Shiny Pokémon was enough to convince Jesse of battling the Smoochum. He immediately sent out his Empoleon, Torzure, who made a flashy entrance in an attempt to show off his power.

Jesse commanded his Pokémon to use Swagger, an attack that raised the target attack, but also confused it. This tactic created the possibility of the Pokémon causing more damage than usual to itself in the event that it should hurt itself in confusion. The attack also had the potential to prove less than beneficial for the user, however, since it was also in danger of receiving more damage.

Empoleon started to twirl and spin before winking at the baby Pokémon. Smoochum tilted her head and blinked a few times. Then, she suddenly grew enraged. I don’t know what was going through the baby Pokémon’s head, but I did know that she looked weird as she thrashed about and ran in circles.

It seemed like confusion had worked in favor of Jesse and Empoleon this time around. It would be interesting to see how it would work out next.

Nice, it seemed to work. Smoochum started trashing about and running around in circles. Now, we could use this confusion to our advantage.

"Torzure, keep close, continue dancing, specifically Swords Dance, and then Metal Claw!" I acted out the order of the moves as I said them. Punpun wasn't the only one that knew how to dance. I twirled around on the ball of my left foot as my right propelled me into a spin as I kept my arms close in front of me. I kept my face facing forward, keeping spot is the technical term so that I didn't get dizzy. After three spins I use the momentum to roll into an uppercut.

Torzure nodded and turned back towards Smoochum. He began with his arms out so he formed a cross. He pulled them in and they started glowing lavender as he started to spin as if he was a top. The spinning Empoleon closed in on Smoochum, and angled himself downwards so he could reach underneath her head. He spun one last time before the lavender glow turned a shining silver as Empoleon slashed upwards under the shiny Smoochum's jaw.

As Smoochum thrashed about due to effects of Swagger, Empoleon and Jesse were already working on another combination attack.

"Torzure, keep close, continue dancing, specifically Swords Dance, and then Metal Claw!" Jesse commanded.

As if he was doing the battling, the trainer broke out into a dance himself. He started to spin as Empoleon spun. Then, both Pokémon and trainer still in sync, Jesse used the momentum from the spin to uppercut. I couldn’t help but grin a bit at the sight of it.

“Nice dance moves,” I said to Jesse, jokingly.

After turning back around and looking over at Empoleon, I realized that Empoleon had also finished up his dance/attack. Smoochum flew up into the air with a horrified look on her face. The little Pokémon smashed right into the side of the mountain. There was a faint sound of crushing ice as a small patch of snow fell from the jagged rock that mountain up the mountain’s wall.

I squinted to find Smoochum. When the snow had completely cleared from the area that the Pokémon hit the mountain, I noticed a small hole about the size of Smoochum in the side of the mountain. Why hasn’t the Pokémon come back down? I thought to myself.

Suddenly, a faint roaring sound broke out. Then, it grew louder and louder as time went by. I looked up in anticipation towards the mountain. A few seconds later, Smoochum burst from the hole that she’d created when she collided with the mountain. Following Smoochum’s reemergence, a large stream of snow started to pour from the hole. Judging from the size of the hole and the speed that it poured out from the hole, I knew that this stream of snow would make a strong impact when it hit. It was headed straight for Empoleon.

“It’s using Avalanche,” I said in a firm voice. “Quick, Luxray! Protect!”

Luxray immediately created a shield that ran along the border of the mountain side. If the attack should hit Empoleon, then he would be safe from falling off of the side of the mountain. Protect also created a barrier that separated Luxray, Jesse, and me from the attack. Because of the amount of energy required to maintain such a large shield, I knew it would only last for a few seconds. I hoped the attack was over soon.

The shiny Smoochum flew upwards into the air, smashing into the side of the mountain. It cracked into an icy sheet, causing a patch of snow to fall down the mountain, covering Smoochum. When the snow cloud dissipated, I could see a small hole in the side of the mountain.

My Empoleon landed from his uppercut Metal Claw and struck a dashing cool pose like from a superhero movie.

“Good job, Torzure.” I calculated which move to use after Smoochum came out of the mountain. Maybe another drill peck would work.

Smoochum didn’t come out for quite some time. I was starting to worry that I knocked it out already. Suddenly, the mountain began to bellow from the hole as if it was a mouth. The mountain started to shake after a while, and it spat out the Smoochum and a huge stream of ice and snow. Smoochum rode the top of the icy wave like a surfer in the ocean. I could see the angry look upon its face beneath the bruises and slashes. It seemed to direct the wave right towards Torzure. The amount of packed snow was frightening.

“It’s using Avalanche,” Dee said in a firm voice. “Quick, Luxray! Protect!”

His Luxray immediately created a shield that ran along the border of the mountain side, probably so that Torzure wouldn't fall off the side of the mountain. The shield also surrounded Luxray, Dee, and me. Hopefully this complex Protect barrier would last for the entire attack.

But, what would Torzure do in the situation. If only I had taught it Protect from the TM my brother got me. Maybe Torzure could try to drill through it, but all that ice might freeze him. He has to figure out a way to dodge it all together. A hydro pump could propel Torzure away, but it takes too long to charge up; Torzure would be blanketed by icy by the time the first squirt would come out. Torzure need to be faster…

“Torzure, use Aqua Jet to get around it!” I yelled through the magical barrier.

Torzure pounced upwards, surrounding himself with a large coat of water. The water itself pulsated with rings of light blue color. Torzure shot up like a rocket towards the incoming Avalanche attack. The air around him whirled and spiraled out of the way, opposite the way Torzure was spinning. Torzure maneuvered through the air with the extreme speed of his Aqua Jet. I hoped that the speed was enough to hit Smoochum before the avalanche hit Torzure.

As the large violent stream of snow came rushing towards his Pokémon, Jesse started to think of how he would counter. It would be no easy feat. I was sure of that. Even though the attack was an ice-type attack, if it made contact, it would be enough to possibly faint Empoleon and bury him deep within the snow. It would be hard to retrieve the Pokémon if that happened.

I had already started to think of a solution in case the worse happened and Empoleon was buried in the snow. Would I melt the snow to get towards Empoleon? Would I get a bunch of Sandslash and Dugtrio to dig through the snow to find Empoleon? What would I tell the Warden? Would I still be allowed to be a Ranger? Would I still want to be a ranger?

It wasn’t until Jesse ordered his Pokémon to use Aqua Jet that I snapped out of my train of thought. I looked up to see that Empoleon was already in mid-attack. He spun like a drill as he charged towards Smoochum like a rocket. His speed allowed him to make sharp and last-minute turns in order to dodge the incoming snow as he worked towards his goal of reaching Smoochum.

I commended Jesse’s ability. So far, Empoleon had managed to dodge the incoming snow and was now very close to Smoochum. The two Pokémon were head to head and collided into each other. The clash between the two Pokémon created a small smacking sound. Smoochum fell down to the ground. Empoleon landed a few feet away from her.

With Smoochum’s attack now over, it was safe for Luxray to stop using Protect. She seemed to know this as well because the shield was gone within seconds. I thanked her for a good job and stroked her fur a bit. I was proud of her for being able to pull off such an energy-consuming attack. Suddenly, there was peace.

The moment of silence was broken by sudden singing. It was a beautiful song, yet there was a sort of eeriness about it. It didn’t quite sound like the lullaby, Sing. No, this was a different melody. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I looked up to see who was singing it. My eyes were met by the sight of Smoochum singing her little heart out. Suddenly, I felt like my stomach had dropped.

“Oh crap.” I said out loud. In all of my surprise, I forgot to mention just what attack Smoochum was using.
