Jesse was having a good time in the park. I was caught off guard by his next question, however.

"So, Dee, tell me a little more about yourself. How did you get into this business?" I tried to find a Pokémon so that I could change the subject, but there was nothing in sight. Then, I decided that there was really nothing to talk about. So, I started to tell the trainer my tale.

“Well, I went to the Academy and learned to be a ranger,” I was about to say, when something caught my eye. There was a Pokémon at the end of the cave. It was dancing. I group of other Pokémon seemed to follow along with it. A colony of Crobat flew in unison with the Pokémon’s dancing. It was pretty cool to watch.

When we got closer, I was able to identify the Pokémon as a Jynx. She had a red dress, purple face, and blond hair. She almost looked human; in fact, it was pretty easy to mistake her for a human from a distance. The Pokémon hummed as she dance.

“Are you interested in a Jynx?” I asked Jesse. “It’s a pretty useful Pokémon at times.”

Dee seemed surprised by my question. I guess not many trainers asked about the ranger. I mean, the trainer is here for a purpose. But, I’m not a normal kind of trainer to begin with anyways. Dee seemed to be distracted though; he looked around for something, maybe a Pokémon or something else to change the subject. We walked along the tunnel system for a bit. I wondered how long these tunnels really were. Not finding anything, he started to speak.

“Well, I went to the Academy and learned to be a ranger,” Dee told me.

Dee was about to continue, when something caught his eye. At the end of the cave, just in front of the exit, there was a humanoid Pokémon dancing. Above it, a flock of Crobot flew around in unison with the Pokémon’s dancing. It seemed that it was the leader, or at least a muse.

As we got closer, the Pokémon seemed to be wearing a red dress. She had purple skin, that oddly looked black, but I could have been mistaken and blond hair. She looked very human, and if she was black, she might have been mistaken for a racial stereotype, but who would think of that…

Dee, probably glad we ran into a distraction, asked me, “Are you interested in a Jynx? It’s a pretty useful Pokémon at times.”

Did I really need a Jynx? Punpun started to hop towards her. Punpun stood tall and started dancing alongside Jynx. Punpun was a good dancer, evidenced from our first encounter when he used rain dance. It was a surprised, but it helped us against a Fire-type that was messing with our day.

“Nah, but Punpun seems to wait to dance a bit. Hopefully that will be ok?” I asked.

Punpun placed his paw out, as if to ask to dance.

Punpun seemed to have made quick friends with Jynx. Jynx seemed to be enjoying herself too. The two Pokémon danced together for a while. We watched them dance for a bit.

“Well,” I said a few minutes later. “We should get going. We don’t want to be here when it gets dark.”

I looked at my watch. We had a few hours before the sun went down. I hoped that we would be out of the park by then, but I at least wanted to be out of this cave. Punpun hopped back over to us and we continued moving.

It felt like we were coming to the end of the tunnel. We had been walking through the winding tunnel for a while now, and I could see some light coming in. Suddenly, a Tyrogue defiantly walked in front of us. He looked like he wanted to battle. I stopped walking.

“There’s a Tyrogue,” I pointed out. “Are you interested in battling him?”

Jynx gracefully took Punpun’s hand and the two started dancing. I could imagine the music playing to the steps that the two were dancing: a step in sync here, a twirl there, a half moon here… The two were tearing up the imaginary dance floor with a mix of cha-cha and salsa moves.

Dee and I watch for a few moments, and Crobat started humming along to music, though I think they were trying to harmonize.

“Well,” Dee said a few minutes later. “We should get going. We don’t want to be here when it gets dark.”

Shoot. I didn’t know it was getting that late. I wonder what we’re going to do about shelter on this icy mountain, or if we could go on at night. Punpun bowed to his dance partner, who blushed as she left, leading her posse of bats with her. I patted Punpun on the head, and we started walking through the tunnels once more.

I had hoped we’d be out of the tunnel by now. And by gosh, once I thought it, look! I could see some light coming in from what I hoped to be the end of the tunnel. Suddenly, a silloutte appeared, and we stopped. It appeared to be another humanoid figure, but not like Jynx. It was shorter and was not wearing a dress. The figure walked closer, out of the exit of the tunnels to where we could clearly see him. Oh, it was a Tyrogue. Sensei Kevin trained many Tyrogue back in the Saffron Dojo. He looked like he wanted to battle.

“There’s a Tyrogue,” Dee pointed out. “Are you interested in battling him?”

“Yes, and I know the perfect combatant for this. Let’s go Hercule!” I tossed out his Pokeball, and in a flash of brilliant red light, my Exeggutor appeared. While it hadn’t been the next battle, I’d hope he’d appreciate this one.

”Hey! You said you’d let me have the next one, and it was a friggin Bagon. I mean come on. It wasn’t even an ice type.” Hercule’s three heads yelled at me in unison. He was stomping his feet, pretty much being a baby about the whole thing.

“Stop whining. Punpun was already out, and I thought he could use the exercise.” I tried to justify.

“Wait a minute!” Punpun chimed in. He stared sadly at me, opened his eyes wide, and said, “You think I’m out of shape.” His quivering lip made me sad. It got me every time.

“No, no! It’s not like that. I mean, I wanted you to have a little warm up just in case.” I quickly thought up. “Hey, look! There’s a Tyrogue. Hercule, you remember fighting a bunch of them back in the day? This is a perfect battle for you.”

Hercule turned and saw Tyrogue, and I immediately knew what he was thinking by the grin in his mouths. He remembered when he was an Exeggcute and challenged the Saffron Dojo in the guise of a Breloom.

“Alright, Jesse. Let’s do this,” he said forgetting all about what I had said before. Punpun wouldn’t be so naïve, but I’ll deal with that later.

Tyrogue was already in a fighting stance, so it was time for battle.

“Alright, use a Confusion. Toss him, and then maintain it to disguise your location,” I commanded. Tricks were Hercule’s specialty.

Hercule smiled as he started to glow a light purple hue. The light started to surround Tyrogue. If the attack hit, he’d be tossed back, and Hercule would try to confuse him by making it seem like there was more than one Hercule surrounding him. Hopefully, Tyrogue wouldn’t figure out which Hercule was real before Hercule could make another attack.

    vs. Tyrogue BP1

Jesse was enthusiastic about battling Tyrogue. He decided to use his Exeggutor this time around. Exeggutor was a smart choice because of its psychic typing. The little Tyrogue didn’t seem fazed by Exeggutor appearance at all. Tyrogue loved challenges. They were known to take on opponents even five times their times. What was more impressive was that a lot of these times, they ended up winning.

I wouldn’t mind a Tyrogue, I thought. Tyrogue evolved into one of my favorite Pokémon. I was about to become lost in thought when Exeggutor started to attack. Jesse had ordered him to use Confusion. The plan was to toss Tyrogue around a bit, then let Confusion’s secondary effects take over. Exeggutor was supposed to split into multiple copies of himself to confuse the Tyrogue and make the battle a bit easier.

A blue aura surrounded the Tyrogue as he was lifted into the air and tossed backwards. The Tyrogue feels down on his back. Some dust was lifted off of the ground from his impact. The eager little Pokémon quickly sprung to his feet. When he looked up, there were five Exeggutor surrounding him.

“What a cheap trick,” the Pokémon thought to himself; however, it didn’t take long for him to figure out the real Exeggutor. He immediately got up and started to charge towards the real Exeggutor, without first thinking of a strategy.

Tyrogue didn’t seem fazed by my Exeggcutor’s presence. Tyrogue was lifted into the air by the light purple aura from the Confusion attack. Exeggutor tossed him into the tunnel ceiling and into the side wall before letting gravity do all the work. Tyrogue twisted and tumbled on the ground as dust and dirt was kicked up. As the haze of debris lifted, Tyrogue’s eyes shone that the confusion held on, at least for a little bit. Tyrogue’s eyes were surrounded by a faint purple outline, the secondary effect of the Confusion. Tyrogue was now looking at five versions of Hercule, making funny faces at him with 15 faces.

Tyrogue didn’t seem to like that at all. He gritted his teeth, but the rest of his body calmed. He was trying to figure out which Exeggutor was real. I knew that Tyrogue could keep a cool head in battle; many of my Taekwondo peers had Tyrogue, though they were no match for my skills. And no I don’t mean my Pokémon skills. I mean that I can take on Tyrogue one on one. Sensei Kevin taught me well enough to pin down a room full of Tyrogue, and that’s only when I was seven. But this was Hercule battle, and I don’t think Dee would appreciate me battling unless it was absolutely necessarily, and as a Babel, I’ve come into many scenarios where I have no Pokémon at my side to help me.

Tyrogue got up and rushed towards Hercule, the real one. That was a bit faster than I had expected. This one might just be coming with me to New Island. I’m just glad Bill, a family friend, had disabled the pesky “six limit” on my PC box. The league understood; Babels have some good perks if you know who will listen to you.

I looked closer at Tyrogue’s attack: he wasn’t thinking up any combos, just brute strength. Oh, he has much to learn, and Hercule is just the Pokémon for that.

“Use the Stun Spore and Psychic Combo: Paralyzing Net!” I commanded.

I’ve thought Hercule many tricks, which he seemed to enjoy pulling off. It was in his nature as a deceiver, and his multiple heads made it easy for him to control different moves at once. Hercule shook the leaves on the top of his fat palm-tree like body. Small yellow spores fluttered out like smoke rising out of a volcano. Hercule spun a bit before launching it towards the incoming Tyrogue. Two of Hercule’s heads proceeded to glow a brighter light lavender color. The spore cloud was covered in the glow and started to solidify into a spider web-like shape, which spun fast towards the Tyrogue.

The stun spore net would engulf Tyrogue, stunning his body. The net would also at the same time toss him further away due to the Psychic attack behind the combo. At least, that is what would happen in theory.

    vs. Tyrogue BP2

While Tyrogue was charging towards Exeggutor, the Coconut Pokémon released large pulse of spores. They looked like pollen that was floating in the air. Then, each spore started to glow as Exeggutor took control of them to form a sort of web-shaped net. I thought it was pretty that Exeggutor was able to control every last spore from the attack. I guess having three brains comes in handy at times.

With his three minds, Exeggutor launched the powdery net towards Tyrogue. When the spores made contact with the Scuffle Pokémon, they wrapped around him and knocked him back. The Pokémon was on the ground, paralyzed. He struggled to get back to his feet. He’d been through tougher battles than this. When he had finally won this battle, he would attend to the wounds that he had gained.

He struggled but was only able to get back on his knees. He couldn’t move because of the paralyzing spores that he had been exposed to.

I expected Jesse and his Pokémon to be able to quickly gain the advantage in this battle. The Psychic Pokémon Exeggutor had a type advantage and overall strength advantage to the baby Fighting Pokémon Tyrogue. Jesse should have no trouble winning this match.

Tyrogue continued to struggle to get back into the battle; however, he could not muster up the strength to do so.

Twirling counter clockwise, the Psychic/Stun Spore net stuck to the charging Tyrogue, who didn’t have time to dodge. Flipping the Tyrogue upside down, the net wrapped around him binding his arms and legs. The Pokémon was tossed against the cave wall; a dirt cloud burst from the spot Psychic threw Tyrogue into. When he fell to the ground, the Psychic glow dissipated, letting the spores rest on Tyrogue’s skins. Tyrogue struggled to get back up, but only managed to get back on his knees. He was breathing heavy, one eye closed in pain. He was trying his best to beat the paralysis, but to no avail.

It was the perfect time to strike. “Hercule, use Wood Hammer!” I exclaimed. I’ve never seen Hercule use it, he would always prefer setting up traps and attacking from a distance, but Tyrogue didn’t seem to be going anywhere, so laying a trap wouldn’t do us any good. Either way, this was going to be something new for both of us.

Hercule rushed towards the fallen Pokémon. Usually, this would be the time that a Pokémon’s arm would glow blue, but since Hercule didn’t have any arms being an Exeggutor, I was surprised when one of his heads started glowing blue aura, covering up his entire head. Exeggutor leapt into the air and swung around his blue-glowing head into fully paralyzed Tyrogue like a hammer into a nail.

    vs. Tyrogue BP3

Jesse and his Exeggutor took advantage of the Tyrogue’s inability to attack. The Pokemon was paralyzed and struggle as hard as he could; however, he couldn't build up the strength to pick himself up and start fighting again.

“Hercule, use Wood Hammer!” Jesse commanded his Pokémon. I was a bit surprised. I’d grown accustomed to all of the contest-style battling combos that Jesse and his Pokémon were using. I figured that a tricky combo would not be of much use this time around since Tyrogue wasn’t really doing anything or going anywhere.

Hercule jumped into the air. One of his heads started to glow. Since he didn’t have any hands, he had to just make do with what he did have. After leaping into the air, he turned and swung his head to hit the Scuffle Pokémon, who was still struggling to get up. It looked more like a Headbutt attack rather than a Wood Hammer attack. Nonetheless, the attack hit Tyrogue on his back. He fell down on his stomach and squealed in pain. Hercule let out a cry. He'd packed so much into the attack that there was recoil damage.

He had to get back up. He struggled again, but was unable to get back on his feet. To him, it felt as if something was weighing him down. He felt like he was wearing weighted clothing. If he could only get up, he could beat this bully who was trying to harm him.

The bulbous egg-shaped glowing head struck into Tyrogue’s back, pounding the small Fighting-type Pokémon into the ground. Tyrogue let out a giant yell that was only bolstered by Hercule’s glowing head, which also screamed out in pain. I guess using Wood Hammer wasn’t such a great idea, especially if I haven’t used it before. But now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

The other two heads looked worryingly at the third, which was still wincing. They turned towards me and said in unison, “Jesse, watch out next time. We’ve only got three heads. How about we stick to the tricks?”

I couldn’t disagree. I didn’t want to prolong this battle with Hercule using more tricks. “Sorry, Hercule. I thought a head-on approach…” I quickly ate up my words, as I caught the ill-timed pun. “I mean, we need to get out of the cave soon. I looks like it is getting dark, and I don’t think we want to be stuck in a dark cave when that happens. So how about we end this?”

The third head opened its eyes and said, “It is ok. Come on you two; Jesse knows best. And hey, you’ve always said I’ve had a hard head.”

The three heads started laughing together, but I looked on to where Tyrogue was. He kept struggling to get up, unable to return to his feet. He must have been having a hard time; I mean, here he was being tricked left and right by Hercule, only to be left fully paralyzed while Hercule starts smashing into him. And now, Hercule was laughing. Tyrogue probably thought that we were mocking him. This wasn’t the way Tyrogue should feel. I needed to end this fast.

I reached into my back pack and pulled out another Parkball. I hit the size-changing mechanism, turning it to the size of an orange. I turned to Hercule and asked, “Hey, can you help me with my aim?”

They looked at me and said, “Wild Pitch?”

I smiled and said, “Sure, Wild Pitch…”

They cheered and I threw the Parkball towards Tyrogue. I was afraid that I might overshoot, since Tyrogue was prone on the ground, so Hercule was going to help with one of my own combo moves. I usually used these catching combos for fleeing Pokémon or hard to pin down Pokémon, but Tyrogue was just out of my throwing reach.

Hercule’s three sets of eyes started glowing lavender, and the Parkball started to glow lavender as well. It started seemingly chaotically fly in random directions around the cave, bouncing off of the walls and the ceiling, before finally spiraling towards Tyrogue’s body. Hercule let go of the psychic hold on the Parkball and let its momentum hit Tyrogue.

    vs. Tyrogue BP4

I watched as the little Tyrogue struggled to get up and couldn’t help but feel bad for the little guy. This battle was not going too well for him. Jesse started to talk. Throughout my journey on Mt. Oktori with Jesse, it always seemed like he was talking to himself. I had to constantly remind myself that he could talk to Pokémon. Apparently, this is what he was doing. He was talking to his Exeggutor.

They must have decided that it was time to capture the fighting type because Jesse reached into his bag and pulled out a Parkball. He pressed the button to make the Parkball its normal size. Then, he threw it. It bounced all over the place. Someone needs to brush up on their Pokeball-throwing skills, I thought before I realized that it was actually Exeggutor controlling it. A little while longer, the Parkball steadied its course and headed straight for Tyrogue.

The ball hit Tyrogue in the head and bounced off. It emitted a red beam of light that engulfed Tyrogue’s body and sucked him in. Then, the ball bounced a little before resting on the ground. It started to sway from side to side as Tyrogue weakly struggled to free himself from the Pokeball.

A few seconds later, the Pokeball stopped shaking. A sound echoed out to signal that the Pokémon had been captured. Following the same routine as the first time a Pokémon was captured, I went over and picked up the Parkball and put in the little sack that I carried the Parkballs in. I carried an extra sack so that I didn’t get Jesse’s Pokémon mixed up with mine. I walked back over to the trainer.

”Congratulations, you captured a Tyrogue,” I said. “So, which Pokémon are you going to evolve it into?”

The Parkball struck Tyrogue in the head and bounced off, emitting the usual red beam of light that engulfed Tyrogue’s body and sucked him in. I had always wondered why it was a red light. Prose told me that he learned and that it was in his thesis paper, but who wants to read that boring stuff. Anyways, the ball swayed from side to side. The Parkball stopped shaking and the all too familiar echo of capture sounded.

Dee walked over, picked up the Parkball and put it in the little sack that he held the rest of the Pokemon I had captured. He came back over to me and said,”Congratulations, you captured a Tyrogue. So, which Pokémon are you going to evolve it into?”

"Well, if I had to decide right now, I think I would have to choose Hitmonchan. Its elemental punches would work great for surprise combos and contest combinations. But, for now, Tyrogue still needs a bit of training." I looked towards the light at the end of this tunnel. "I think I've had enough of this tunnel. How about you?"

Jesse has pretty much had enough of the tunnel, but so did I. Besides, we didn’t want to be in there when it got too dark. We walked out of the cave. I could see the sun setting in the western sky. The sky was turning into a bright orange color. Mount Deckbi, which was the opposite of Mt. Oktori in terms of the Pokémon that lived there, blended in perfectly with the colors of the sunset. It would be about 30 minutes before the sun was completely down.

The tunnel had taken us to a pathway on the side of the mountain. The pathway curved around the mountain like a snake curled around a rock. The path had been covered with special sand and gravel so that it wouldn't freeze up during the cold weather and to make it safe to travel on. We could walk along the path until we got to the top, or at least, until we didn’t want to go any further. I hadn’t really heard of anyone going all the way to the top of Mt. Oktori, but supposedly, there was something amazing up there. Maybe we would get to see it.

As we walked down the spiraling path, a small creature that looked like a hat came into view. It was yellow with tiny black feet. Upon closer inspection, I realized that it was a Snorunt. Snorunt were known for living in the mountains. They made their shelter out of the many cave networks within the mountains. This particular Snorunt must have been looking for its cave.

Like I had done with all of the other Pokémon encounters, I asked Jesse if he wanted to battle it.

Dee and I walked out of the cave and saw the sun setting along the coast line. The atmosphere was churning with brilliant colors of orange and crimson. It was certainly a beautiful sight, but it reminded me of a question that had been plaguing me for a long time.

I turned to Dee and asked, "Hey, do you ever wonder why Rayquaza is green. I mean, the sky is never green, is it? Wouldn't it be better camouflage to be like blue or even white like a cloud? And if it was in space, that’s even worse. Am I right?"

Dee eventually replied, though I didn’t remember exactly what he said. I’ll probably remember during the battle. Sometimes my mind just works like that.

The tunnel led us to a pathway that coiled up the side of the mountain. It was odd that the path wasn't icy. I didn't slide once, which I was very grateful for. By the racing beating of my heart as I looked over the edge, I knew we were high up.

We trekked up the trail; we must have went around the circumference of the mountain at least once because I saw the sun set twice. I wondered what could be at the top of Mt. Oktori. Maybe a secret base belonging to a group of legendary Pokemon. Maybe they watch over the park, causing secret plots against the rangers. They'll try to stage an escape to the outside world! And maybe a group of trainers will help to stop them along with a ranger in some kind of epic quest. That'd be cool.

I saw that while I was day dreaming, Dee stopped. I shook my head to attention and saw a small yellow dunce cap walking around. Wait that can't be right. Oh, it was a Snorunt. she turned and I saw her small black feet and face. She seemed to be looking for something. She was checking the side of the mountain. Maybe she was trying to get inside the mountain.

Dee turned to me and asked, "Snorunt, battle, yes, no?"

I turned to him and gave him the thumbs up. "Snorunt, battle, yes!"

    "Awesome!"

    "Totally!"

And we rocked out to air guitars.

I slapped myself and got my head into the battle. I pulled out one of my Pokéball and threw it to the air. The Pokéball erupted into a blue light (custom made by my brother Prose) and out appeared my Empoleon, Torzure. The giant emperor penguin flexed its wings and cried out: “Torzure has arrived.” His golden trident-like crown brilliantly reflected the last bits of sunlight, which was probably going to go away in about half an hour.

“Yo, Torzure, are you ready to rock?” I asked holding up my fist. I knew that he was ready to rock, but I loved the enthusiasm he had.

He turned towards me, lifted up his left fin and replied, “Always ready to rock! Just say the word!”

“Alright, let’s get it started with a Drill Peck.”

    “Ya hoo!”
Torzure cried as he started spinning into a tornado of blue tipped off with yellow shining light from the setting sun. The cold air swirled around him, causing the air to crackle from the small air vacuums the Drill Peck was creating. He kicked up some of the dirt as he coiled his way towards the Snorunt. I felt wind kicking back from the twister, and I was glad that I still had my brother’s trench coat.

    vs. Snorunt BP1

Jesse was adamant about capturing the Snorunt. Maybe he wanted a Froslass, or a Glalie. Either Pokémon would be a fine choice, but first, you had to capture Snorunt and evolve it. He sent out his Empoleon who was cleverly named Torzure. Honestly, I didn’t known what Torzure meant. Maybe it was a combination of Torrent and Azure. I didn’t know.

Jesse didn’t waste any time getting Torzure to attack. He ordered the Pokémon to use Drill Peck. Torzure started to spin rapidly, almost like a tornado. Then, he blasted off towards the little Snorunt.

Snorunt stood there looking helpless at first. Then, at the last minute, it hoped into the air. Torzure went flying past the Snow Hat Pokémon. It kept going. I knew that a Pokémon could turn while in the middle of using Drill Peck, but sometimes, the Pokémon would not do so unless its trainer told it to do so. I wondered if this was the case.

While I was busy analyzing the battle, Snorunt, still in the air from jumping, turned around towards the drilling Empoleon. It formed an ice crystal about the size of its body, and with one small shove, sent the crystal flying towards the Empoleon.
