    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Apparently she did. Kai stood there for a few moments with that big look of surprise on her face. She really was lucky to come across such a rare Pokémon. Ivy was glad that she wanted to battle it. It would be a waste otherwise.

The creature sized them up from atop its perch, baring its fangs and flicking its powerful wings threateningly. It roared, trying to intimidate them, but the Ranger had seen enough scary things to not be too phased by it. Haxbat hissed and growled in response, but she shushed him. The Aerodactyl was going to be agitated soon enough from the coming battle; they didn't need the large Crobat to challenge it too.

Ivy stepped back towards the stairs, trying to get out of the way. They had a pretty large battlefield as it was, but she knew what these fights got like sometimes. It never hurt to be out of the way. Worst case scenario they could duck down on the stairs to stay out of range.

Kai released a Starmie from its ball, its dark blue points spinning. The colorful jewel in the center responded to its Trainer's words. “Start things off with a Skill Swap, Starmie,” she said, watching the Rock Pokémon in its tree. “Keep it simple and keep your distance – we don't know what this this is capable of, yet.”

Ivy knew they would find out soon enough. Haxbat swooped in behind her shoulder, deciding that there was nothing else left to do. The almost-dragon was clearly not interested in him or his Trainer, so he could sit back and watch. She was glad he thought so. Sometimes he got a little over-protective, despite his cautious nature. It was maybe because of that that he responded more violently to threats.

Starmie floated over to the pool of water, a good base for the Water type to have. It could always draw strength from the pool if it needed a boost. It hovered above the surface, showing off its Psychic capabilities. She had always been amazed of the way they could manipulate things with their mind.

Then, the jewel in its centered started to glow as the Starmie followed its Trainer's command. It focused on the Aerodactyl, sending a shadowy beam toward the creature. Transfixed, it did nothing but watch as the Psychic type tried to swap abilities.

The beam cut off eventually, just after Kai told Starmie to use a Thunder Wave in the hopes of paralyzing the creature. A beam of cackling electricity shot out in the same vein the Skill Swap lines had been. Starmie didn't seem like it was exuding any pressure, and she didn't think the Aerodactyl was unnerved. In fact, it looked pretty calm even though the lightning bolts were racing toward it. If not either of those abilities, Starmie must've inherited something they called Rock Head. It gave a Pokémon no fear when attacking, and any backlash from attacks they performed wasn't felt at all. Interesting one, but she wasn't sure how useful it would be.

The Thunder Wave overcame the Aerodactyl, and it cried out as the bolts wrapped around its neck, wings, and tail. She could hear the crackles from here, but other than the mildly annoyed look on its face, it didn't look bothered at all.

It crowed into the sky, tilting its head up and opening its maw wide as it gave its battle cry. Then, thunder crackled on its fangs, and she could see the sparks that had wrapped around its body were now being drawn to its maw. It gave another cry and flapped its powerful wings as it took off, using the tree as a launch pad. It swooped down toward the water, and Starmie, it's mouth cracking with power.

A quick dive and the Flying Pokémon snagged Starmie's top star point, biting down hard and sending bolts through the Water type's body. The area lit up as the Aerodactyl discharged the electricity. Then, as soon as it had struck, it was gone, flying up and back toward the waterfall.

Ivy was puzzled as it didn't stop, instead flying straight through the falling water and disappearing from view. She knew most Ground and Rock types avoided the water like the plague because of their weakness, so this was really strange.

The creature returned then, a shadowy form appearing behind the water curtain seconds before it popped out to hover in front of the rushing falls. It called out again, watching Starmie closely. It didn't look damaged from the water. In fact, it didn't look damaged at all.

The Ranger did know that a Pokémon could be trained enough to strengthen its body against its weaknesses. There had been records of swimming Sandshrew and of Hippowdon learning to control the water to shoot it in powerful pulses. She supposed that if this waterfall was its home, it could learn to resist the water.

What was more interesting though was that effects from the Thunder Wave seemed to be gone. She guessed that it could've drawn the electricity for its attack, but somehow she didn't think that was right. She would have to guess it was Starmie's Natural Cure ability that it received. While normally a Pokémon had to leave battle for it to work, perhaps disappearing into the waterfall for a few minutes had worked in its place?

She wasn't sure, but this almost-dragon was tricky. Kai would have to be careful.

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

((OOC: IT'S ONLY BEEN, LIKE, A MONTH... silly vacation, silly procrastination, yada yada... I'll try to go faster this time. Although you definitely had my stumped with this last bit... XD
Er, Female please. Everything else is already male. XD)

Kai blinked. “Gah,” she said, staring as the battle unfolded. “Gah.” She felt herself start to hit her face in frustration with her hand, unwittingly doing what could only be described as “facepalming”.

<Keep it up and you’ll kill all of the brain cells you have left,> Fred remarked cheerily.

“Gahhh…” she retorted, amazed at her own stupidity. “Completely forgot about the mechanics of Natural Cure… of course this isn’t going to be a normal battle. That Aerodactyl can do whatever it wants. And then I botched up Rock Head? Of course the blasted thing is going to have more than one ability… I really shouldn’t have forgotten about that…”

<Yeah, you were pretty stupid on that one,> Fred replied. She could sense his anxiety.

“And you didn’t bother warning me?” she retorted wryly. She knew they’d have to get back to the battle, but Kai had already spent what seemed like a month just staring at it… she couldn’t mess it up much more.

<It was funny watching you botch everything up…> Fred admitted guiltily. <You looked pretty excited doing all of that, and it’s funny to watch you screw up that much.>

“Glad you care,” Kai said tightly. “Any advice?”

She wasn’t expecting anything important, or anything mildly useful, but she was surprised when Fred replied, <Aerodactyl are fast. You know that, obviously. Fred…Starmie’s best option at slowing it down would be Thunder Wave, but it’s nullified that with Natural Cure.>

“Skill Swap it back, then?” Kai suggested quizzically.

<Nah, it’s smart. It’s probably learned that a giant beam of pink and purple energy isn’t going to end well, so you’ll have absolutely no shot to try that again. You can either use its speed to your favor, somehow, or you can slow it down. I trust you know what to do for either situation.>

Kai nodded quietly. “Yeah,” she replied distractedly, her eyes already fixing on the battle. Aerodactyl could learn a few speed boosting moves, but that could be worked around in the future. She tried to look at the advantages that she had. Starmie had the water, but Aerodactyl didn’t seem afraid of it. No matter; she doubted that any Aerodactyl could be more skilled in the water than Starmie or any other naturally born water-type. Of course, she wasn’t unfamiliar with the nasty surprises that assumptions brought her on this run…

She also had access to Rock Head, but that wasn’t going to help Starmie much. She vaguely recalled that Rock Head nullified the recoil damage that certain moves brought, but Starmie didn’t have access to many recoil-inducing moves, if any. Perhaps Double-Edge, she noted, but Starmie didn’t even have that… Then again, she could easily invent a recoil inducing move of her own. Maybe.

Kai smiled. May as well, she realized grimly. She had been given a pretty good hand, but now she had messed it up and had to work around it. The Aerodactyl was smart; as odd as it was to think that she had been beaten by a prehistoric lizard that wasn’t even smart enough to survive the end of its world (she belatedly realized that her comment may have been a little cruel), it wasn’t that unfamiliar to her now. Playing it safe wasn’t going to cut it, so she may as well completely go nuts. Wouldn’t hurt. After all, the worst that could happen would only involve falling off of the cliff…

If anyone could have looked into Kai’s mind, they would have seen the gears whirring around, frantically trying to find a solution. I have access to recoil and water. Objective is to lower the speed and weaken sufficiently for a clean capture. Starmie also has psychic powers that will be useful, and I have a whole slew of attacks to hit it with… Flash Cannon, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam to name a few. Even if it has a miracle resistance to water that lets it jump in and out without a problem, I can work around that.

    Ding.

“Let’s start it off with Waterfall, Starmie. Not enough to hit the Aerodactyl—actually, keep your distance. I don’t want that thing getting near you. We just have to climb the waterfall in front of you and get above it, okay?” Kai called out her commands to her Pokémon, trying to convey her thoughts into realistic words and thinking frantically as she spoke.

Starmie twinkled in response, although with a noticeably less enthusiasm than before. Kai noticed with a twinge that they’d have to heal that up eventually, if they had time. Without changing expression, Starmie quickly began to spin, the ruby in its center pulsing with rhythm to the rotation. Just like Dragonite had done before them, Starmie quickly coated itself in a surrounding veil of water and began charging up the waterfall, sprays of water and mist cascading down as the purple pointed star ascended, careful to steer clear of the Aerodactyl. Kai hoped that the pounding water would detract the rock-dragon, but it hadn’t seemed to fussed last time, so they’d have to rely a bit on luck. Not that fortune had been smiling upon them lately, but she didn’t have much of a choice.

“Okay, and once we’re done with that, hit the entire waterfall with an Icy Wind, okay? Just be sure to keep some of the water around you; we’re not quite done yet,” Kai shouted towards her Starmie. She knew that performing long and complex combos were dangerous in the park, but she had a hunch that Aerodactyl could neutralize anything simple that they could pull out.

The sphere of water that had surrounded Starmie as it powered its way up the waterfall expanded and flicked away from the purple star, swirling around it in rings of water. Kai knew that Starmie wouldn’t be able to keep up something like this forever, but it was only temporary. Still hovering above the raging current at the top of the waterfall, Starmie began to spin quickly, a barrage of ice forming from the freezing water around it. As far away as she was, Kai couldn’t feel the chill of what was hopefully a wind as cold as winter, but she could only hope that Starmie was doing it correctly. Ideally, Starmie’s attack would be powerful enough to freeze most of the waterfall, and hopefully hit the Aerodactyl for a bit of damage. Kai wasn’t too fussed about the damage, but she needed for the surface of the waterfall to at least freeze for her combination to work out.

Kai watched from afar as the top of the waterfall began to ripple beneath the freezing wind that Starmie was releasing from its jewel core. She knew that some of the wind would freeze into ice and hopefully serve to slow down the Aerodactyl if it managed to hit the rock-dragon, which would always be helpful, but she also knew that Icy Wind was slightly inaccurate and could end up missing altogether… although it couldn’t be that bad that Starmie would miss a waterfall from five feet away, right?

Kai knew that they had to act fast before Starmie lost its focus. It was calm in nature, but she knew that it couldn’t be easy balancing on top of a massive waterfall, especially while trying to freeze the darn thing. Perhaps this combination wasn’t such a good idea, after all…

No time to question it; just act. Yeah. That can’t go wrong. She noticed that Starmie was slowly slipping, unable to levitate itself for much longer above the raging current for much longer and still maintain its Icy Wind attack. “Right, so let the water converge back around you and then hit it with a Waterfall and Thunderbolt combination.”

With a relieved tingling of bell-like chimes, Starmie relinquished its psychic hold above the current and began to plummet down the waterfall towards Aerodactyl. As it fell, the water from before began swirling back around it, sheathing it in a giant sphere of rippling water. Kai knew that Starmie preferred to use ranged attacks, but they were running out of options… and besides, Aerodactyl was probably expecting that. Funny, Kai realized wryly, that they were really acting like the Aerodactyl was on par with her intelligence, and maybe surpassed her…

The key to her combination, though, was the second part. Starmie was one of the few water-types that could utilize electric-typed attacks with surprising proficiency, and Kai never stopped to exploit that fact when she had to. Of course, she wouldn’t dream of using it underwater: firstly, the electricity would be conducted throughout the entire waterfall and lake area and likely shock the daylights out of every poor, unsuspecting Pokémon in the river, and secondly, it would shock Starmie with its own attack.

However, as Starmie began releasing flickering bolts of blue electricity from its ruby-core, Kai knew that the key lay in the ability that they had inadvertently swapped. She had been hoping for Pressure or Unnerve, but this would work out just as well if Starmie could pull it off.

Starmie began picking up speed as it zipped down what was hopefully a frozen waterfall – with the water frozen, it would be unable to conduct the electricity that Starmie was releasing, and hopefully protect the Pokémon further downstream – and soon electricity fizzled around the entire sphere, the crackling blue arcs hissing and rippling beneath the surface of the ball of water. Kai knew that in normal circumstances, such a buildup of electricity would completely destroy Starmie, especially since it would be shocking itself until it fainted, meaning there would be no escape. But with their newfound ability, Rock Head, Starmie would be able to negate the damage it was inflicting upon itself.

Well, hopefully. Kai was pretty sure that this plan could backfire in a million and one ways: after all, she had been almost positive that the Skill Swap-Thunder Wave combination would have been flawless, and they had ended up butchering that one. So if she wasn’t sure with this one, her track record would probably make everything fail…

But there wasn’t time to change back, even if Kai had wanted to. Starmie was already descending down the waterfall towards Aerodactyl, cloaking in a sphere crackling full of water and thunder, and hopefully protected by its newly obtained ability. Kai had depended upon the Icy Wind to maybe slow down Aerodactyl in the long term, but they were also using the force of gravity’s pulling them down to gain a bit of speed and hopefully an edge on Aerodactyl.

As it was, though, there were a million different ways that their plan could go wrong, starting with Rock Head’s failing and ending with “HOLY CRAP, AERODACTYL IS ATTACKING”.

Speaking of Aerodactyl attacking, Kai watched with bated breath as Starmie plunged down the (hopefully) frozen waterfall, surrounded by a whirling vortex of water and electricity.

There were only so many ways that this could go wrong…

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Kai looked a little dismayed that her Thunder Wave plan hadn't actually fallen through the way she wanted to. That was the Park though. These Pokémon were wild, and they didn't necessarily play by the same rules that Trainers in regular battles did. Ivy thought she was doing just fine though, especially since this was her first run. In fact, she did a lot better than people she took through all the time. She seemed to know her own partners inside and out, and that was the true key. Thinking outside of the box didn't hurt either.

Her next set of commands were a little odd, but she wanted to see what would happen. The first task was for Starmie to create a waterfall. It did so with pleasure, water being its natural element. The pillar rose from the water it was in, and then Starmie surrounded itself with a veil of the liquid and began to climb. Ivy noticed the column was at a bit of an angle, though it was hardly noticeable. She had the spark of an idea of what they were trying to do.

Then, Kai asked Starmie to use Icy Wind to freeze the waterfall. A foggy smoke came from the jewel core, spraying the air around, and the water around its points started freezing. The water cracked as it traveled down, swirling in a spiral around the thing until it reached the water surface, where it stopped.

The Aerodactyl was watching silently, keeping her eyes peeled on what Starmie was doing. It made slow circles around the waterfall, wanting to stay close but not fighting. She looked pretty calm, though Ivy noticed she was cringing a bit as she flew around the water, maybe getting splashed by it from flying too close. Then the Aerodactyl noticed Starmie was doing something else, and she veered off to the left and gained some distance.

Kai then threw in a Thunderbolt attack for Starmie to perform, having it slide down the water for momentum. That's what Ivy figured she was doing as soon as she saw the ice. The momentum should help Starmie fly out and have enough speed and oomph to actually hit the aerial Pokémon. That must be why it was slanted a bit too, so Starmie didn't go plummeting right into the water.

The starfish gained speed as it slid down, having its water covering start to fizzle as the sparks formed inside of it. Normally this would be painful for it, but with Aerodactyl's borrowed ability, it didn't look like it was phasing it at all.

The Flying-type Pokémon saw it go into motion and then set herself. She bowed her head a little bit and then swooped in toward the waterfall, aiming to slam right into Starmie. The Water-type on the other hand waited until in range and then launched itself off of the pillar.

They crashed into each other, and Ivy could see the added elements causing harm to the ancient Pokémon. She flinched and was thrown off a bit, her flight spiraling down a little as she struggled to right herself. Starmie fell back a little, but went into launching a Thunderbolt from closer range.

The Aerodactyl finally got her bearings back just as she saw the Starmie's point begin to cackle. She suddenly let out a bellowing roar that echoed through the area around them. Starmie was distracted a bit, so the Thunderbolt it cast only managed to clip a wing of the opponent. Then the Water-type fell back into the pool.

The rock bird cried out and darted to the bank, falling to the ground with a crash that kicked up a dust cloud. It looked like it hurt her quite a bit, but Ivy knew she would still have a ton of fight left in her.

(Oh, bahaha, everyone tells me I have to fix up my description a bit. You got the gist, and I did damage, so I honestly can't complain. XD)
(Also, I fall pitifully short of meeting the MCR… but too lazy to fix that… irony… ._.)

Kai smiled, glad that her attack had pretty much worked the way they had planned. It hadn't been perfect, but then again, she had just told Starmie to use Waterfall, Icy Wind, and Thunderbolt in rapid succession with very little other instructions... she was glad that the Starmie had still been smart enough to pull off a combination like it had done, even without decent directions. Yet another reason why she loved using Starmie, along with forty thousand other reasons. It really could be called Fred.

Kai watched quietly as the Aerodactyl landed with a dull thud on the opposite bank of the lake, a cloud of dust scattering around where it had landed with a dull thud. It looked weakened, but Kai knew that they weren't quite out of the woods... lake... sky-thingy, yet, and she'd have a bit more work to do if she wanted things to end in a capture. She was, after all, still going to capture this Aerodactyl. As she glanced from the Aerodactyl to Starmie, who had been forced by the impact of their collision back into the pool -- Kai was thankful that the water had broken its fall, rather than, say, a cliff -- she knew that now would be their best time to act. Aerodactyl wasn't looking like it would move anywhere for a few moments, stunned as it was by the collision, although it certainly had a lot of fight still left in it.

Aerodactyl had a lot of tricks up her sleeve... wings, as it had demonstrated by using Iron Head. Normally, a Roar as fearsome as the one the dragon-bird had demonstrated would have sent Starmie fleeing back to its Pokeball, but it had actually distracted and slightly messed up Starmie's attack. Kai knew that their opponent wasn't going to be as easy as the ones before had been.

Starmie bobbed merrily in the water, though, showing almost no signs of injury. Still, Kai could see that it wasn't in its best condition -- after all, it had been bitten by a giant bird, shocked by electricity, jumping off of waterfalls, and getting hit by a giant face, to name a few -- and they'd have to act quickly. She noticed that Aerodactyl was more comfortable when using attacks at close quarters, which was interesting, largely because Starmie excelled more at using ranged attacks. That would probably come to their advantage later in the fight, but Kai knew that the Aerodactyl could easily do some sort of super-awesome-wind-attack if it really needed to.

For the time being, though, Kai had her opportunity and she intended to take it. "Okay, Starmie," she called out to her Pokemon, which was happily bobbing up and down in the pool like a cork. "Let's use Grass Knot on it -- concentrate really hard and try to pin it down, okay? The harder you make it for her to get up from her spot, the less likely it'll be to attack you, so try to get as many roots in there as you can." Kai paused, wondering if she should try throwing in another attack. She decided it wouldn't hurt; after all, Starmie seemed okay with doing relatively complex combinations. "And once you're done with that, I want you to hit it with a Surf, okay? Try to stay in the middle of the pool if you can: it doesn't seem to like the water, and maybe it'll have a harder time attacking you if you have a moat sort of thing..." Kai trailed off, watching to see how Starmie would react.

The ten-pointed start chimed merrily in response, flexing its mysterious purple limbs in anticipation. The ruby jewel in the center of its body glistened, both from the water and from its preparation to attack. As the light from the gem intensified, Starmie raised its limbs into the air, the points shining from sharpness, and the light from the gem reached a blinding intensity. As quickly as it had come, though, the light faded, and all was silent for a moment. Kai bit her lip.

Then, the ground around Aerodactyl exploded into a mass of writhing roots, tendrils of green. At first, they had just been the grass, but these roots were different: they were still the same as the grass that surrounded the Aerodactyl and most of the rest of the cliff, but this grass had aged and expanded and grown in a matter of instants, formed when Starmie had used its psychic energy to manipulate the cells inside of each blade of grass to grow and multiply at an unnatural rate.

Starmie had used this technique before, largely against fellow Water-types such as Swampert -- here, she felt Fred chuckle a bit -- although she had never used it for the sake if trapping an opponent. Normally, it made the enemy trip over itself and use its own weight to its disadvantage, but that theory wouldn't work out so well here. After all, Aerodactyl didn't even walk that often... what was it supposed to trip on? However, as Kai watched the mass of writhing roots, mottled and knotty, she knew that this plan was different-- they were trying to use the multitude of grassy roots to imprison the Aerodactyl and at the very least keep it on the ground, away from Starmie. It wasn't going to be easy, no doubt, because no creature of the sky enjoyed being pinioned to the earth, but Kai was hopeful that Starmie could pull it off.

Before she could see if their massive net-like creation of roots was successful, however, Starmie twinkled and launched itself into its next attack. It bobbed up and down in the water a few more times and then floated quickly into the air, propelled this time not by psychic energies but by a large jet of water that buoyed up beneath it. On both sides of the column of water, the waves around Starmie rose to its command, lapping around the pillar upon which Starmie floated and bringing the water level of the lake down by several inches as more and more water joined the liquid blue conglomerate that Starmie was calmly creating. As Starmie raised its limbs into the air, the water responded until both the column and the surrounding torrents were nearly twenty feet in the air, while the lake itself had emptied out into the sky. Moist sand and bits of debris littered the bottom of the pond’s bed, and thick layers of rich silt glistened in the sunlight.

For a moment, all was calm as tiny globules of water winked, pulling themselves away from the surface of the lake and joining the massive pillars of water that Starmie had created. Starmie hovered above all of the water, calmly surveying what it had created. Kai imagined that if it had had eyes instead of a giant jewel on its face, it would have been blinking with pleasure.

Then, almost lazily, Starmie spun in a quick circle, and the water moved in a flood beneath it. While Starmie still hovered on a small pillar of water at the center of the deluge, the rest of the liquid surged towards the hopefully pinioned Aerodactyl, bearing down upon it like a massive claw. Only a fraction of water still remained at the bottom of the lake, lapping at the new, temporary shoreline, while the rest of it surged towards the Aerodactyl in a raging torrent. Kai never understood why such a move was called Surf, but she decided against questioning it now.

Fists clenched and eyes fixated on their opponent, Kai watched with anticipation as the wall of water roared and moved towards Aerodactyl with deafening noise and speed, desperately hoping that this combination would end better than their last...

(OOC: You made MCR by my count. Now it's just a hop, skip, and a jump. Extra characters improve your capture rate anyway. Also, your Skarmory disk isn't broken as of this new rule, so I'm giving it back and you can use it on another run if you come back.)

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Aerodactyl was still on the ground struggling to get up. The last attack from Starmie had taken a lot out of her. Ivy could see her limbs shaking. But she was still trying to get up. She'd be a fierce fighter once Kai had her on her team. Ivy had no doubt she'd be successful. The combinations they had pulled off had been pretty impressive so far, so Ivy wasn't worried that they'd come up with enough of them to eventually wear out the ancient rock flyer.

Kai thought for a bit, but she came up with another plan. “Okay, Starmie,” she called. Starmie was fine among its natural element, still mostly unhurt inside the pool. “Let's use Grass Knot on it – concentrate really hard to try to pin it down, okay?”

That was a good idea since the flyer was grounded at the moment. They would have to act fast though; Ivy could see her struggling to get up every second. “And once you're done with that, I want you to hit with with a Surf, okay?” she added, trying to let Starmie stay as far away as it could. She had probably noticed that Aerodactyl liked to get up close and personal.

Starmie's jewel shone as it bobbed in the pool, and Ivy could feel trembles in the earth as the roots and vines came to the Water-type's call. They emerged around the flyer in a ring, and she could see them twisting and twirling through the dirt. They were thick and heavy, and if enough of them got around the flyer, it wasn't going anywhere.

Aerodactyl continued to struggle as the vines grew and got closer, but Starmie started the next part of its attack. It rose up on a pillar of water, and the pool rose up to meet it. It did so gracefully and almost quietly, and it was quite a picture to see. The water lingered there for a moment before Starmie did a twist and then the water cascaded down in waves toward the target.

The vines locked onto their target at that moment, sliding over the flyer's body and threading through her limbs and back into the soil. The Aerodactyl called out in rage and struggled even harder, but the vines were too thick. She didn't break through. Then she saw the incoming wave and realized she couldn't move.

She didn't look afraid though. Instead, she took a huge lungful of air, and just as the water struck, she bellowed into it. Ivy could see the sound waves, and they traveled in rings like a rocket straight back at Starmie. They emerged from the water just before striking, pulses that repeatedly hit like an Oddish's Bullet Seed.

Then Ivy exclaimed her surprise when she realized what it was. Starmie's jewel blinked a few times in confusion. Aerodactyl had used the water as a road for her Supersonic attack. Sound traveled four times faster under water than it did through air.

The liquid still washed over the flyer though; it was too late to stop that. Ivy could see she was really starting to wear down, but she didn't give up. She growled, and the winds answered her, starting out in a slow winding circle around her, and then it picked up speed along with debris. Soon it was a whirling Twister, and it wasted no time cutting through the vines and freeing the rock bird.

Aerodactyl then used it to gain momentum, and though her flight was shaky, the whirling winds picked her up and sent her flying up and back into the air. Then with a call, the Twister was sent across the water. It struck Starmie and knocked it back into the water pool.

With the Aerodactyl now airborne again, though weak, Kai was going to have to be careful. This was doubly so if they couldn't find some way to break through Starmie's confusion.

@WinterVines ... holy muffins, look who's alive. Like, I think I'm out of excuses here. But yeah. I totally didn't forget that this ever existed... heh... ._.

    Ugh. Half-hearted post is half-hearted. =x

Kai gaped for a moment, wondering if it was even worth it to make a snide remark regarding how embarassing or long or late her response was... it likely wasn't worth it, even in her head. Fred would notice, wouldn't he?

<Nope,> Fred said cheekily. Kai blinked, slightly startled. That was something new. Normally, he was full of snide, sarcastic remarks to ruin her day and waste even more time, but...

<Yeah, you heard me,> Fred said with a slight grin. Apparently you could hear those over mental links these days. that was new.

"I suppose this joke had to end at some point," Kai murmured with a sheepish, internal smile, already frowning at the field and multi-tasking as she bit her lip and tried to decide what she wanted to do. Aerodactyl was still quite alive and kicking, despite their efforts. Ugh. "Remind me again why that was ever amusing?"

    <It wasn't.>

    "That explains a lot."

Kai focused entirely on the field, concentrating now as she felt Fred's presence fade out of her mind. He was probably off to chase a Butterfree or something. He liked that.

However, Kai wasn't as happy at what exactly she was seeing. Well, happy, yes-- Starmie had done the attact wonderfully, trapping the Aerodactyl and hitting it with a blast of water, just like they had planned, and dealt a large amount of damage in the process-- but now the issue of taking damage and dealing with confusion, Kai's least favorite status condition, would make things even worse.

Things like Freezing and Burning were fine. Paralysis was annoying, Toxic she could deal with, and Sleep stopped eventually. But Kai hated Confusion. More often than not, her Pokemon ended up smacking themselves in the face rather than attacking their opponents, something that Kai never understood. Then again, she had never been confused to such an intense level, and she felt silly getting angry at her Pokemon, especially when it wasn't even their fault to begin with. So instead, she tended to direct her anger at the status itself.

At least Aerodactyl isn't airborne, Kai thought to herself. That was possibly the only good thing out of the situation, especially after Starmie got knocked back and injured once more by a malicious-looking Twister. Starmie bobbed to the surface like a cork, although its gem still blinked like a broken car headlight and its movements were slow and sluggish, even in the shimmering pool. Kai cringed. Already, finding a way around confusion would be obnoxious. Again, she thought to herself with a slight smile-- she was lucky-- at least it's not flying at us.

Naturally, the Aerodactyl promptly flew high into the air and sent the rest of the Twister towards Starmie, knocking it further into the pool. Aerodactyl then circled high above, borne by the remaining winds from the Twister.

Kai scowled. Of course. Now Starmie was confused, Aerodactyl was flying above them, and Fred didn't seem to be talking any more. On second thought, the third thing wasn't so bad. But the others were worrying to her, at the very least-- when it came down to it, Kai was afraid. She needed a plan, first to combat the confusion and then bring Aerodactyl back to earth, so to speak.

Confusion came in different forms. In this case, Aerodactyl had emitted a giant-freaking-sound-wave, as Kai decided to describe it, that had dazzled Starmie's central gem core and prevented the starfish from properly hearing and interpteting Kai's commands, resulting in an erratic movement pattern.

Kai frowned. Although Starmie's jewel core tended to indicate more things than simply Starmie's physical status, she had a hunch that the supersonic sound waves had damaged the gem, which would naturally result in Starmie's confusion. It seemed like the only natural conclusion, in reality; Starmie lacked ears-- or eyes, for that matter, but that wasn't really relevant--, so it would be impossible for Starmie to hear said sound waves and be affected in that sense. Kai idly wondered how she could see sound at all, or how anyone could, for that matter, before dismissing it. No more stalling. Kai had a plan, one so simple and abysmally obvious that it probably shouldn't work, but she didn't have much else of a choice. If Starmie's broken jewel core was broken-- Kai desperately hoped that it was, lest she prove that she was a bad Starmie trainer right in front of Ivy, for starters, and then the pissed Aerodactyl, on top of that-- then all that they would have to do was fix it.

Kai continued to frown, though. Her idea just sounded so stupid, so painfully obvious, that there had to be something wrong with it. As it was, Kai knew that she didn't have much time to wait. She bit her lip for a moment, and then shouted in as loud and clear of a voice as she could to Starmie, to make sure that her instructions were clear enough to get across. "I need you to Recover, Starmie, but try to focus as much of your regenerative abilities on your jewel core, okay? The jewel core. I'm pretty sure that the internal damage there is the source of the confusion." Kai stopped talking quickly, lest Starmie misinterpret anything else. Kai knew from experience that confused Pokemon had very fragile mindsets, and she didn't want to overcomplicate things. Even if that had been all she had done so far.

Starmie blinked in what Kai desperately hoped was an affirmitave, and its ruby core began to glow from the inside with a gentle, soothing light, sending rays of energy sparking around the gem's perimeter. Kai understood that Starmie were known for their incredible regenerative properties-- she had heard that some were even capable of regrowing lost limbs, although, thankfully, she had never had to try that-- but she still wasn't sure if she had chosen the right way to solve the problem with which she had been confronted. Aerodactyl was a Pokemon that had, thus far, seemed focused on offense; perhaps playing defensively would be playing straight into its hands. Wings. Whatever they were called.

In that case, it would be best not to just sit there and wait for Aerodactyl to pick them off from the sky. If Kai had a choice, she would sit there with Starmie and Recover all the way, until she was sure that Starmie was ready to fight... but she didn't have a choice. Aerodactyl would kinda do something, anything, before they had that chance. That would suck-- and besides-- Kai did want to get out of the National Park before both she and Ivy died of old age or something else that was horribly inconvenient.

"Starmie, when you're feeling up to it, go ahead and hit it with a Brine," Kai said, biting her lip. Again, she hated rushing things, but there wasn't much to go with. Aerodactyl was too far away, and she didn't want to confront it directly, especially not in the air-- could Starmie even maintain prolonged flight with its psychic abilities? Doubtful-- given Starmie's somewhat weakened state with the confusion. Kai knew that the key to battling wild Pokemon was to keep things as surprising and original as possible, lest the wild Pokemon catch on, or her own Pokemon became weary after using the same attack so often. As far as she knew, they hadn't used anything too similar to Brine during their battle with the leviathan. Kai had thought about using Flash Cannon, as the weaker move would have been much less riskier, but Aerodactyl seemed to be tanking her hits reasonably well. In addition, Kai was tentative about using any moves that involved Starmie's compromised gem core. Namely, Flash Cannon, although a good portion of her move aresnal would be harder to use while avoiding too much strain for her injured Starmie.

Said injured Starmie was still bobbing, looking slightly tipsy, in the center of the pool of water, but Kai could see what she thought was a flicker of understanding in it's face-sort-of-gem-thing. Hopefully that was enough.

Ideally, Starmie could attack the Aerodactyl with a wave of water, similarly to how it had used Surf a few minutes ago to deal a decent amount of damage and wear down the Aerodactyl, and a bunch of generic water attacks from before. From what Kai had seen, this Aerodactyl was inclined to tanking the hits as well as it could and then firing back with as much power as it could-- which, often, was a devastatingly large amount. Of course, though, Brine wasn't like the other water attacks Starmie had used before... or else it wouldn't be categorized as a different attack.

Starmie had stopped moving now, and Kai hoped that it was out of concentration and not in confusion. If Starmie had managed to break through the confusion, it would be using its psychic powers to draw out ions from the bottom of the lake into the water around it. Sodium ions, in particular, although Kai wasn't really sure and wasn't inclined to find out, especially not now. She did know, vaguely, that there were trace amounts of sodium ions in the earth, regardless of the location, and Starmie would be using a combination of its psychic powers and its abilities to manipulate electrons-- in this case, namely the positve charges that the metal cations provided in the earth, making the water around Starmie full of electrolytes, which would cause lacerations in any open wounds that Aerodactyl might have; given its low health, Aerodactyl looked wounded, so there would be quite a lot of those, causing minute intra-cellular lysis and inflicting more damage than water would do normally...

    Oh god. Chemistry.

The water around Starmie began to ripple, as well, but Kai still couldn't be sure if it was from Starmie or it just happened to be doing so. Ideally, the newly ionized water would douse the Aerodactyl from below with force slightly less than the Surf attack, but as Kai had so wonderfully proved several times before, a lot of her plans had a tendency to go wrong. Even without the confusion... ugh. There were too many variables for things to go comfortably, but Kai didn't have much of a choice. She watched as the water shuddered around her, and looked between Aerodactyl and Starmie with varying concern, biting her lip nervously as Starmie began to move with painstaking slowness...

    BP#9

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Kai looked less than pleased at her Starmie's situation. Ivy wasn't a fan of confusion herself, since the outcome of your commands was totally out of your control. Crobat like hers were partially known for playing tricks on foes like that, although Ivy could count on one hand how many times she had actually used it in battle. She didn't like seeing Pokemon hurt themselves when it wasn't in their control. She supposed Ranger habits had carried on into her daily life too.

The Aerodactyl probably had few choices left when it attacked with the sound wave. Being pinned and helpless wasn't a good situation either, and the creature was acting a little desperate. That was a good sign for Kai, though, since despite meaning the rock flyer was going to be more risky, it also meant that she was running out of fuel. She'd probably be easy to catch soon.

The Trainer was thinking of how to help her confused starfish with all her energy. Ivy liked that. Most of the time, Trainers simply ignored it, and it usually ended up in their Pokemon getting hurt. If she thought of a good idea, Starmie could possibly understand the directions and break through the status.

The Aerodactyl, in the meantime, was hovering dangerously above, like a vulture. She was eying the starfish carefully, probably waiting for the perfect time to swoop in. She wasn't moving in yet, though, which gave Kai time to act.

“I need you to Recover, Starmie,” she said, “but try to focus as much of your regenerative abilities on your jewel core, okay? The jewel core. I'm pretty sure that the internal damage there is the source of the confusion.” The Trainer cut herself off quickly, maybe worried that she was saying too much.

Ivy winced a little, hoping that the Starmie was going to be able to understand okay. It seemed to flash its jewel core a little, like it understood or was going to try, so that was a good sign. The jewel seemed to glow softly, like it was working.

Ivy hoped it was; movement in the sky alerted her to the Aerodactyl starting to move. She tiled her body to the side a bit, giving her a little downward momentum as she started circling closer. Perhaps she was looking for a good angle, or maybe she was still biding her time. The Ranger couldn't see what it was planning, if anything, so she couldn't shout any type of warning.

Kai seemed to know that she couldn't just sit there and try to heal, so she called out another move. “Starmie, when you're feeling up to it, go ahead and hit it with a Brine.”

Ivy couldn't tell if the starfish understood or not. She was too busy watching the Rock-type. From what she understood, the Brine technique tried to gather the more salty minerals in the water in order to hit the foe. It did extra damage if the target was already pretty weakened, since the salt seeped into the wounds. The minerals burned, and that caused the Pokemon to wear out even faster. Since the Aerodactyl was pretty tired already, even though it stubbornly refused to stop fighting, that would be sure to almost defeat it if Starmie could pull it off. The water here probably had a lot of that mineral at the bottom, so it shouldn't be too hard to collect. It would just depend on Starmie.

The Aerodactyl suddenly jerked and made a downward dive, and it seemed it was now or never for the starfish. It wouldn't have time to heal anymore, and if it was going to perform a water attack, now was the time to do it, while the creature was over the lake.

The flyer pulled up short and arched her head back for a moment before lunging forward and breathing a stream of pink and purple fire. It was harsher than normal flames, though, more like a icy blast than a fire. It gleamed and snapped as it blasted the Starmie where it was sticking out of the water. It was probably a Dragonbreath, given the looks.

The Aerodactyl finished and flapped her wings hard, giving her upward momentum as she tried to fly off back toward land. She may have wanted to land or something, to rest a little. For a second, Ivy thought the Starmie was trapped within its own mind too much to do anything. However, she was pleasantly surprised when the water responded.

The surface shook like an earthquake was happening, and then suddenly it shot upward like a geyser, almost like it had been boiled hot. The water was a little murky in spots, which showed her the minerals were present. The water launched up and struck the Rock-type, and the creature cried out sharply as her wounds were subjected to salt.

She took a downward flight path and crashed into the ground near the lake, causing a cloud of dust to explode around her. It settled fast, perhaps due to all the moisture, and soon Ivy could see the creature struggling to move again. The dirt clung to her, giving her a dusty coat as she tried to drag herself father from the water since that was the biggest threat. The Brine had taken a lot out of her.

“She's probably ready for capture now,” Ivy called out to the Trainer. The old Pokemon would probably keep fighting, but the Ranger didn't want to see it if it wasn't necessary. At least they knew it was a fierce battler.

Starmie looked a lot better too. That Recover probably helped it out quite a bit. There were a few techniques to clear the mind, and since Starmie operated mostly by the jewel core, this one seemed to work. Now she just had to see what Kai was going to do next.

Awww, yeah. Only took me a couple of days this time... =x

Kai blinked, watching as the remnants of the pink and purple fire cleared away, and Starmie executed its attack beautifully, even healing itself in the process after curing the confusion. Speaking of annoying statuses, the confusion looked like it had cleared out altogether after Starmie had used Recover, and Kai was relieved. It was a lot simpler that way, at least.

"She's probably ready for capture now," Ivy called out. Kai blinked, so focused on Starmie that she hadn't been watching their opponent at all. Oops. Cringing internally, Kai looked across the lake, to where Aerodactyl was trying to drag itself away from the dreaded water, dust clinging to its scarred and ancient hide. It looked pretty worn out, but Kai was fairly certain that if she tried attacking once more, even with something like a status move, the Aerodactyl might be too weak for successful capture-- after all, Aerodactyl might unintentionally hurt herself when defending herself, and Kai certainly didn't want all of Starmie (and apparently, her own) hard work to go up in smoke. Or... mist. Yeah, that seemed like the more proper term.

As it was, the Aerodactyl was probably worn out. Kai had read enough in her pamphlet to understand that Rangers practically always knew what was best (although, apparently, there had been some silly Ranger who had attempted to battle a Kyogre on his lonesome, as Fred often brought up in his endless requests to enter the Park...), and they seemed to make the rational decisions, so Kai figured that now would be the best time to make a capture. She fiddled in her bag for a ball, and her fingers grasped the smooth green and yellow metal of a Park Ball. They all looked the same, apparently (she could have sworn that they hadn't when the battle began, but...hey...), but Kai figured that the little "P" engraved on the front of it had to mean something, so...

"Okay, Starmie, I think we can back off a bit now," she called out, readying the Park Ball in her hand. Starmie twinkled merrily and its newly healed jewel core flashed yellow in return, and it backed away while remaining in the pool, careful not to disturb the injured Aerodactyl. Even Starmie knew that Kai was horridly uncoordinated, and it didn't want to make the job harder for her by enticing Aerodactyl to take to the skies.

At least, that was what Kai hoped Starmie was doing. Odds were, it was just trying to dive underwater in case Kai threw the ball really, reaaally badly (there was always that one time...) and it hit Starmie instead. Because, knowing her, something ridiculous like that was bound to happen.

Anywho. Crossing her fingers, Kai lobbed the Park Ball towards the Aerodactyl, crossing her fingers as the ball spiraled through the air. She had been doing okay so far, but at this point, she could only hope for the best.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Kai seemed pleased that her Pokemon was able to overcome the confusion it had suffered. After healing, the Starmie looked fine. It's center jewel glimmered without a scratch, and its movements were sure instead of wobbly.

The Trainer seemed to take Ivy's words into consideration. She dug through her bag, and the Ranger saw her pull out a standard Park ball. At the Aerodactyl's weakened state, that should be more than enough to capture the flier. “Okay, Starmie,” she called. “I think we can back off a bit now.”

Taking her cue, the starfish blinked its jewel and backed away from the edge of the water, keeping its distance from their opponent. It was probably trying not to startle the rock bird. She had been scrambling so much to keep herself safe, that causing her any more stress might be more harmful than helpful. If they played it right, the wild Pokemon could stay right there, giving Kai a still target.

The Starmie sunk into the water a little as the Trainer threw her ball. It sailed over the pool and toward the ancient Pokemon that was still trying to get up. She didn't have enough strength left, though, so when the device was close enough, she couldn't dodge out of the way. The Park ball knocked into her bony shoulder and sucked up the Pokemon in a beam of red light.

The device collected its capture and snapped shut, falling to the ground with a soft thud. It wobbled a little, the Pokemon still fighting despite being tired, but soon it stilled. The center lit up with red and the resounding ping carried over the water back to the group.

“Well that wasn't so painless,” Ivy said. She took a couple steps and turned back to Kai. “That Aerodactyl is probably the prize of the place, but there's some more Pokemon to see if you're up for it. Let's go around over by the rocks to get your ball and you can think of where you might want to go next on the way.”

I'M OBVIOUSLY NOT KAI. YOU KNOW WHY? IT'S THE SAME DATE AS THE ACTUAL RANGER POST. OH. MY. GOD. (<I'm kinda proud of that one, in case you can't tell. But not really. XD
    @WinterVines

"Well, that wasn't so painless," Ivy began. Kai cringed. No, it certainly wasn't painless. Loooots and lots of pain had gone on, but... had it actually worked? She had managed to catch the Aerodactyl after such a long and drawn out battle? The ball had pinged and stopped shaking, but Kai couldn't be sure. She was fairly certain... in her excitement, she almost didn't hear what Ivy had to say: "That Aerodactyl is probably the prize of the place, but there's some more Pokemon to see if you're up for it. Let's go around over by the rocks to get your ball and you can think of where you might want to go next on the way."

Beaming, Kai nodded, although she was internally rejoicing. Finally, she thought with a grin. She had come to the Park largely for an Aerodactyl, she knew-- although, above all, the experience had proven to be almost as good as the prize, as cheesy as that maxim was-- and now they had finally done it. "I could probably sing," she added to Fred with a slight grin.

<Don't,> he advised her flatly. <The wild Pokemon have already been through enough. You don't have to destroy their eardrums or their sanity while you're at it.>

"Touche." Still excited, Kai looked up, releasing a breath she hadn't even known she had been holding. She probably looked like some sort of idiot Cheshire Cat or something, but that was okay. And most people probably could've made a lot cleaner or lot faster capture, but that was okay, too. Pokemon were just that awesome. "I can recall Starmie, right?" she asked Ivy tentatively, motioning to her Pokemon in the pool, which was bobbing merrily. "It's been through a tough battle and stuff, and I don't want to stress Starmie out any more by making the poor little guy try to levitate..." Kai was vaguely aware that she was chattering on quite energetically as she began slowly making her way over to the rocks-- after all, she didn't want to get jumped by a wild Pokemon or something awkward like that-- but she dismissed it after a second. "And I think I'd like to stick around for a bit," she added, blushing a little. "I know it's felt like I've been in here for months or something -- apparently, it's only been a few hours?-- but I remember reading that people are going to kersplode the Outer Heavens after a bit or something... I'm not sure how that would work... rumors... chainy still raging... so I figured I could enjoy it while I could, right? The view up here is phenomenal." She stopped talking finally, aware that her last paragraph had probably been more than she had said out lout in the entire National Park at one time. Oops. "That's is okay, right? I don't want to seem pretentious or anything..."

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

They traveled under the waterfall to the other side of the pool, hugging the wall so none of the group got wet. Haxbat soared ahead of her, doing acrobatics in the air. It had been a while since he stretched his wings, so he was enjoying all of the space. He slid into the thin line of trees along the area, weaving in and out of the trunks. The Ranger wasn't sure how wide this platform was, but there was probably a good chunk of forest there. She wondered if Kai wanted to explore any of it.

They reached the sealed device and Ivy reached down to pick it up, putting it into the pocket she had added the Spearow and Honchkrow to. Once it was safely zippered, she turned back to Kai.

“I can recall Starmie right?” the Trainer asked as she looked at her starfish still bobbing in the pool. She opted doing that over making it hover along with them. It was probably pretty tired after that intense battle.

Ivy nodded at her. “Of course. Starmie fought hard and deserves a good rest. I can tell you two have a really good bond by how much it wanted to please you.”

“And I think I'd like to stick around for a bit,” Kai added then. Ivy was just fine with that. She liked spending time in the nature as much as anything, and she enjoyed taking Trainers around that weren't in a hurry to find what they wanted and leave. Besides, she didn't come to the Heavens very often. What if she never got to come here again?

A rustling in the trees caught her attention next. She turned to them just as her purple Crobat came darting out of them, kicking up the loose leaves and other foliage in a sudden whoosh. A squawking came next, followed by a disheveled tan-ish bird with colorful head feathers. It came diving out of the trees and landed on the ground in front of the group as Haxbat glided behind her to hover.

“What did you do?” Ivy asked him with a smile, knowing that sometimes these wild Pokemon got territorial. Haxbat chittered at her, as if telling her he didn't do it, and she laughed. “Well, Kai, this Pidgeotto seems interested in something. What about you?”

    @WinterVines
Bahahaha, I broke the Park. They can all be Common, can't they? Kidding, kidding... Oh, and when I say "charge to my tab", I do mean subtract from my stats if/when the escape roll fails. XD

Kai nodded and recalled Starmie into its Pokeball with a flash of red light. "Thanks, buddy," she whispered to the red and white sphere, her ears turning pink as she realized how silly she might sound. Oh well. Meanwhile, Ivy had placed Aerodactyl's ball into her carrying bag, and the Ranger and her Crobat had begun showing signs of movement onto other pursuits.

It wasn't long before a Pidgeotto flew out of the trees, a belligerent Crobat not far before it, and Kai watched as it alighted in front of them, chattering and clacking its beak. Kai looked at it carefully, knowing what Ivy would probably ask. Sure enough, the Ranger jokingly berated Crobat and then asked, "Well, Kai, this Pidgeotto seems interested in something. What about you?"

Kai tilted her head, studying the Pidgeotto. It cawed at her in return and rustled its feathers. It looked a little aggressive, and Kai hadn't wanted to catch any of the Pidgey line, as amusing as it would be--

    <All are--->

"Nice try. But no." Smiling slightly, Kai looked up at Ivy and shook her head slightly. "I think we'll leave this guy alone, if you don't mind." She hitched her bag higher on her shoulder in preparation to leave, and then remembered to turn towards Ivy and add, "Uh, I ran out of Pokedolls a long time ago, I think. If it doesn't let us leave, do you think I could charge another one to my tab so we could avoid it? It looks a little territorial, and I don't want to encroach."

(OOC: Really really sorry about how long it took. There was a bunch of holiday stuff and then my grandma was taken to the hospital in the ambulance and other stuff that just made me not want to do anything. If you'd like a different Ranger, I'd understand.)

    NBP#13

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Pidgeotto made scuffing sounds against the ground as it scratched with its feet. It didn't look too happy, though the Ranger didn't have any idea why. Sometimes they were just like that. Maybe it had seen a lot of visitors lately or something.

“I think we'll leave this guy alone, if you don't mind,” Kai said. The Trainer had passed up a Pidgey earlier too, so Ivy wasn't really surprised. Then she added, “Uh, I ran out of Pokedolls a long time ago, I think. If it doesn't let us leave, do you think I could charge another one to my tab so we could avoid it?”

Ivy nodded as she turned to go back down the other side of the lake. As part of her requirements as a Ranger, she had plenty of dolls in her pockets. Vests were handy that way.

They started to continue on, but a low, caw from the bird made them pause in warning. The Pidgeotto had hopped after them a few feet, with its eyes narrowed dangerously and its muscles tense. Ivy got closer and reached into her pocket as she shook her head. “There's no need for that,” she said, pulling out one of the small, pink Clefairy dolls. “Here you go.”

She pulled the small string to make it inflate to roughly half the bird's size and then tossed it over. It made a small plop in the dirt in front of the flier, and after looking at it for a few seconds, the bird seemed satisfied. It picked up the fluffy toy with its strong beak and took flight off into the trees again, disappearing in the branches. Hopefully they couldn't see any more trouble from it.

Ivy walked back to where her Crobat was waiting and kept going as she motioned the rest forward. If they kept on the path from here, they would end up back at the entrance while it was still daylight out. Kai had caught some good Pokemon so far, and with any luck, something would pop up as they neared the exit.

From up here, they could see many of the other foliage-filled platforms since they had gone up so many stairs. The lake thinned out to a river as it trailed away from the falls, and the water could be seen flowing down the center of the place. It branched out into several other small pools and streams, providing nutrients for the plants that were installed up here. It was certainly an interesting place.

They made it down the first set of roughly cut stairs into a semi-wooded area. The previous platform overhung the space like a cliff, so it made the place a little dark when it was lined by trees on two sides as well. A flapping noise caught her attention before they could leave it though, and with a whoosh of air, the Ranger's attention was drawn upward.

A Pokemon came sailing over the ledge they had just left, swooping down close over their heads. Haxbat screeched in warning to the creature, but the bird paid no mind. Instead, it perched on top of one of the tall trees, allowing Ivy to get a better look at it.

It looked like Pidgey, with cream under-feathers and a tanned top, but it had a red-painted tail and red and yellow feathers streaming from the top of its head. It was probably a little shorter than she was, which made the bird pretty huge. If she remembered correctly, these birds were used to transport Trainers a lot of the time.

“There's a Pidgeot,” she told Kai. “I know you're probably not interested since you passed up the other two in its line, but do you want to take a picture? Some people in the office like to put up rewards for pictures of rare Pokemon.”

Oh, no, it's perfectly fine. Firstly, I'm not exactly the paladin of timely posting, and secondly, real life is >>>>(infinitely)>>>> teh pogeymanz. Especially Rangering teh pogeymanz 4 teh kai. Nothing in that sentence was grammatically/linguistically correct. XD But really, I wouldn't be in any position to request a new ranger even if I wanted to.

Hoping you feel better, though. That sounds sorta rough.

    EDIT: 35,500 - 500 = 35,000
    @WinterVines

Thankfully, Ivy had managed to shoo away the Pidgeot with a cleverly placed Pokedoll before it could do anything bad and, like, peck their eyes out. It looked aggressive enough, and Kai didn't doubt that it might've done that if they had provoked it enough. Well, let Flygons be Flygons. Or something.

They walked on a bit further, and entered the open clearing, struggling down massive stairs hewn out of boulders that nested among the high-growing trees. The river was still there, although gentler, and only a tiny gurgle reminded Kai that they still walked near the stream. It was really a beautiful place. Hopefully nothing would ever happen to it, really.

Kai, so overtaken in the natural beauty of the place, almost didn't notice as a large, brown bird landed in front of them majestically and preened itself while Ivy was talking. Kai blinked owlishly and looked up, vaguely recognizing a Pidgeot from its evolutions. "I... uh..." she trailed off, half expecting Fred to make a snarky comment. No cigar. Remembering where she was, she hurriedly fished through her bag lest the Pidgeot prove to be as aggressive as its younger sibling and attack her quickly. "I can see why people would pay money for pictures of these guys," she said conversationally as she fumbled with the lens cap and aimed the camera at the Pidgeot. "They're kinda pretty and stuff..."

The camera sort of exploded in her face in a puff of smoke, which Kai assumed was its way of taking a picture. Hopefully. Still, it didn't stop her from hastily retreating, coughing violently at the acrid smoke, eyes watering. She cringed, aware of how many times she had looked utterly incompetent thus far. And, of course, the smoke.

<You should call him Vivi,> Fred quipped in her mind.

Kai sighed as the smoke cleared. "Oh, come on," she retorted. "No one is possibly going to get that..."

(OOC: I am infinitely shamed at how long this took me ._. Sorry again. I'll try to be more timely now that I know what's up with school. Sort of. Also, I know only one Vivi, and that's from FF9.)

Kai got her camera out and ready as she lined up the shot. Pidgeot were pretty impressive with their size. Then again, most people tended to fly around on them, so it would make sense that they would be about as tall as an average-sized person. Ivy didn't have any bird Pokemon, but luckily Haxbat could carry more than his own weight on those tiny feet he had.

The camera made a poof as a balloon of smoke exploded around the device as she clicked the button. The girl coughed and made waving motions with her hand to clear her face, and Ivy took a step back so she didn't get caught up in the dust. She didn't really have allergies, but she remembered all the storage sheds she had to clean, and she didn't appreciate a ton of dust any more than the next person.

The bird, either fed up with them or perhaps needed to get somewhere, arched its head and cried out, opening its massive wings. Then, with a bit of a lunge, it lifted off the tree and flew back the way they had come. Maybe it was going to go see that Pidgeotto they had run into earlier. It's head feathers trailed after it as it disappeared over the ledge and out of sight.

“Well, let's see what else this place has to offer,” Ivy said as she took a step forward.

Haxbat hovered close behind her as she started down the path. She had never been on this side before, with the trees lining the road on either side. There was definitely much more foliage on this part of the sky island. It probably had something to do with all the run off water flowing into streams and pools. She hadn't noticed anything like that as they were heading up the other side.

It was a little dark, but the trees didn't hang over the path, so the sunlight still filtered through. The trees were pretty thin too, with small trunks she could probably cup both hands around. It was probably the only kind that would grow up here. She wasn't sure how much soil had to be deposited. It would be a shame for all the work to go to waste.

Eventually the trees stopped, and they returned to a short, grassy plain. One of the small streams crossed their path in front, but a stone bridge had been carved out of the platform or whatever substance was brought up here. It arched over the water with a few feet to spare between the path and the wet.

Before they could cross, an eerie coo caught Ivy's attention. She looked carefully but didn't see anything unusual until Haxbat chittered at something lurking under the bridge. Then she saw a whispy white cloud.

As they looked, the rest of the Pokemon became visible. A shiny, purple orb peeked out next, and that let her catch sight of black dots where eyes should be and a yellow x across its nose. It sort of looked like a banaid. Two stringy arms with heart tags on the ends of them touched the bridge to pull the creature up.

“Loooooon,” it said softly. Ivy could admit it; it was adorable.

“Wow, that's a Drifloon,” she said to Kai. “Any interest?”
