OOC: I am not the rat. Just saying. ._. (granted, I also neither condone nor reject either of your actions) Hope you feel better soon.

"Ah... kay..." Kai muttered, fiddling with the voice-player thingy. She found the silvery disk with "Skarmory" written in black sharpie under the label and slid it into the disk drive, pressing the triangular play button. She frowned in confusion when no sound came out, and then shrieked and nearly dropped the device as the metallic din of a caw, which was presumably the cry of a Skarmory. Cringing slightly, Kai gingerly placed the still shrieking device on the ground, vaguely wondering when it would stop doing that.

"I was looking for an Aerodactyl, really," Kai admitted sheepishly. "They're really rare, but they appear in these parts only, and it'd be really cool if I could find one, I think." She felt a bit guilty saying that she was looking for the exact same rare Pokemon as everyone else, but it was the truth... "Oh, and a Skarmory. They're kinda cute." She also opted to ignore the ringing cry of the Skarmoy emanating from the voice player on her backpack, which was anything but cute. "I was looking for a Honchkrow, which ended really well," Kai added with a smile, "and maybe a Drifloon or a Swablu. There's a bunch of cool flying-types up here, and my Deoxys was kinda excited because he might meet Fr-- Arceus up here."

Kai leapt backwards and bit back a curse as a large shape she recognized as a blur of green swooped over Ivy's head, sending clouds of dirt flying into the air. Kai coughed and put her arm over her face to shield it from the sand that pummeled her face. "The what now?" she asked groggily, glancing up blearily through the dust and blinking dirt out of her eyes. She noticed the large green and orange figure of a Flygon in the air, swooping around and doing loops with Ivy's Crobat.

<Prreeeetttty....> Fred said, sounding fascinated. <Take a picture for me, please?> he pleaded.

"Oh, fine, if you insist," Kai replied airily, opting not to point out that she would've taken the magnificent creature's picture either way. She fumbled with the controls of the camera, thankful that the memory card was new and there was no chance that she could find anything strange in the viewfinder...

Kai tentatively pointed the camera at the Flygon, waiting a bit for the clouds of dust to settle. When most of the dirt had returned to its original position on the ground, Kai pressed the large button on the top, which she presumed was the capture button. For a moment, nothing happened, and then the camera seemed to explode as it emitted a bright flash, illuminating the Flygon and capturing the gorgeous scene, and also startling the trainer. She yelped in shock and took a step backwards, dropping the camera to the ground. Blushing and muttering something about dirt, Kai hurriedly grabbed the camera from the ground, brushing the dust off of it as the tips of her fingers turned pink.

"Draaa!" Huggles said cheerfully, waving a lumbering orange arm at the Flygon and her mouth contorted in what appeared to be a smile.

Kai was slightly distracted in her examination of the camera, making sure that nothing was broken. For a chilling moment, it seemed like the screen was cracked, but a picture of Flygon chasing cheerfully after Ivy's Crobat appeared on the screen, and Kai sighed in relief. I really should get that Flygon soon, she thought guiltily to herself. She knew that the bright flash of the camera was supposed to deter the Flygon and send the magnificent creature away from them, but it was almost sad to see the Flygon prepare to leave.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Kai fumbled around with her Poképlayer as she set up the disk. She pressed the play button and waited, a little confused that no sound was coming out. Then a sharp screeching sound rang out, looking like it startled her a bit. Ivy flinched as the noise grated on her ears. Skarmory were pretty too look at, but she didn't like ticking them off.

Huggles cheerfully waved at her fellow dragon as Kai readied her camera to take the picture. With a flash, the moment was captured. The Trainer ended up dropping her camera accidentally afterward, but it looked okay as she was inspecting it. Ivy just shook her head and smiled. She remembered a previous run she had to Deckbi where one of her Trainers had forgotten he took home video on the same camera he brought to the Park. The Ranger was sure Kai didn't have anything so racy to leak out, though she had gotten a good laugh at the time.

Ivy turned toward the waterfall, seeing how Kai wanted to visit there before she left. She reached down to pick up the compass around her neck, thinking back on old memories as she made sure they were going in the right direction to get to the path she wanted to take.

Suddenly, there was a blur of brown, and a tug on her neck almost brought her to the ground again. There was squawking, and then she caught sight of the bird that had latched onto her necklace.

“Hey! Let go of that!” she yelled, trying to hold the chord so it didn't snap.

“Spearow!” she got back in response, and then the small bird finally let go, flying off a few feet to land on the next ledge and stare back at them.

The bird was only around a foot tall, but she knew it could be vicious. A sharp, crinkled beak allowed it to peck at things hard, and its red-tinted wings warned others of the danger it could pose.

“How about one of those, Kai? I'm sure it would be more tame under a Trainer's care... right?”

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

    ((I was feeling lazy. XD))

Kai surveyed the tiny brown and black bird carefully, her eyes narrowing as she watched its beady black eyes and pointed pink beak. The eyes were rather creepy, darting around in every which way and never settling for a moment on anything, instead taking in every detail of its surroundings. The beak was cruelly sharp, and the bird shifted from foot to foot, pointed talons digging into the ground.

Kai shifted her backpack, preparing to ask Ivy if they could escape this encounter, too, when a familiar voice rang in her head.

    <Catch it,> Fred said happily. <^.^>

"I... what... gah," Kai muttered, still cringing and wondering how he could force an emoticon through sound. "If I do, will you stop bothering me for the rest of my run?"

<Sure thing, boss,> the Deoxys replied cheerily.

"Fine," Kai sighed, shifting her mind from admiring or fearing the bird to figuring out its potential weak spots. "Uh... yeah," she said to Ivy, eying the rather angry looking bird with caution, now that Fred wanted her to catch it. Stupid contest, stupid voice, stupid Deoxys... "Hopefully it won't be so angry at us if I try to catch it, right?" she asked with a sheepish smile, pulling out one of the Pokeballs and twirling it idly beneath her fingers. She knew that Huggles was in prime condition to battle, still, but she figured that it'd be nice if some of her other Pokemon got to have a chance to play. Kai raised Huggles's Pokeball and recalled her, quietly wondering how she had managed to forget such a vital thing before. "You did awesomely, Huggles," Kai said cheerily. Still gotta work on that nickname... "Take a break, m'kay?"

The Dragonite turned around to look at her with a grateful and cheerful smile, and then dissolved into a flash of ruby energy, vanishing into the depths of the Pokeball in Kai's hand. Kai smiled and quickly pocketed the Pokeball, aware that time was ticking and the Spearow wasn't just going to sit there forever. Ivy probably wasn't, either, she noted wryly. "Right," she said, more to herself than anyone else. She grabbed a second Pokeball on her belt at random, deciding that any of the Pokemon she had brought with her would be able to take on the Spearow, and she didn't want to really hurt the Spearow too badly anyways-- it wasn't even fully evolved, after all. She tossed the Pokeball into the air, trying to look more confident than she felt, and watched as it exploded in a shower of white sparks.

"Miiiii..." the figure crooned. Kai smiled. If she had actually thought about a Pokemon to use to combat this Spearow, her Milotic would probably end up being the best option. The large, tan sea serpent materialized in the ground in front of Kai, her red eyebrow-fin things shimmering in the sunlight and her blue scaled tail flicking through the air as she calmly surveyed the Spearow, red eyes focusing on her opponent as she caught Kai's glance out of the corner of her eye. Kai grinned. Milotic was famed to be one of the most beautiful Pokemon in existence-- Kai still noticed that fact every time Mitzi came into battle--, but she could also battle pretty darn well. In addition, Mitzi knew to be gentle with her opponents, understanding that Pokemon in the National Park weren't actually enemies, but would hopefully be friends. Or something like that.

"Oh, sweet, Mitz," Kai said aloud. She brushed profusely, realizing that she was actually talking. "Uh, I totally planned that," she added sheepishly. "Yeah." Her eyes narrowing and all joking aside, Kai focused on the Spearow. "Let's start out with a Twister-Hypnosis combo, m'kay?"

Milotic nodded, her eyes widening. The five fins on her tail expanded and elongated as she lifted her cerulean-blue tail into the air, humming quietly to herself. Her tail snaked around in the air, and then the five fins expanded into a fan-like shape, suddenly spinning rapidly and scything through the air. The gentle breeze that had been blowing around the outskirts of Outer Heaven suddenly intensified as torrents of air were sucked into the center. The streams of wind literally became visible as Milotic began spinning her tail even faster, sending ribbons of pale blue wind spinning in a vortex around her tail fins. She frowned in concentration (Kai smiled at how cute she still looked), and then her eyes began glowing with a strange purple light. The Milotic sent pulses of rippling purple energy into the twister, and Kai hurriedly averted her eyes-- even though the attack wasn't directed towards her, Kai knew that looking at the hypnotic pulses of light might still make her feel drowsy, and then she'd look pretty stupid for the rest of her run. Kai tentatively looked sideways at Mitzi, squinting slightly to avoid being hit in the face with the Milotic's Hypnosis. Milotic focused for a bit more, and then she released the cyclone with a short cry.

The twister of energy glowed a faint purple as it rushed towards Spearow, sending small clouds of dust flying into the air around her as it spun like a top towards the bird Pokemon. Kai eyed the purple pulses of energy leaking from the twister tentatively. Hypnosis, as she had found out, often had horrid accuracy and tended to miss. A lot. However, Twister normally never missed, and Mitzi was able to control the currents of air reasonably well-- it would have been better if the twister had been underwater, as Mitzi had better mastery of water than draconic air-- so it was a lot more likely that both Hypnosis and Twister would hit Spearow, hopefully putting it to sleep and maybe inflicting some damage on it. Kai smiled. It was like using a vector for something risky, or some scientific-sounding things like that. Kai watched the cyclone infused with Hypnosis circle towards the Spearow, spinning idly in a circle around it and preparing to hit.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“I was looking for an Aerodactyl,” Kai said a little sheepishly. She was probably a little embarrassed to be searching for something that everyone seemed to be. Ivy couldn't fault any of them though. You liked what you liked, and who cares if it was rare or common. Either way, it got people into her Park. “Oh, and a Skarmory,” she added. “They're kinda cute.” The Ranger agreed.

At that thought, the disk cried out, grating on her ears as it tried to attract one of Kai's other targets. The Trainer then looked at the Spearow. She looked a little iffy, as if she was going to pass it up, and then she spoke. “Hopefully it won't be so angry at us if I try to catch it, right?”

Ivy shrugged, smiling. “Well, we can hope.” Then she took a few steps back, giving them room to fight. Haxbat swooped down to hover behind her shoulder and watch with her.

Kai then returned Huggles, and the dragon looked happy enough to have a break. She then grabbed another ball of her belt, seemingly blind, and tossed it out. A beautiful cream colored snake with a tailed dipped in red and blue scales. The Milotic was truly stunning. The best part about her was that Ivy knew they could really battle too.

The Trainer greeted her Pokémon and then started to give instruction. “Let's start out with a Twister-Hypnosis combo, m'kay?”

The water snake nodded, happy to follow the plan. Her tail fins expanded to form a fan-shape as she lifted her tail. She then began to twist it, and the wind answered the call. The slight breeze they had was now being sucked toward the Milotic's tail, collecting small bits of rocks and foliage as the wind began to form a funnel shape. The wind even tinted from the power being put into it, going from the clearer smoky color to a light blue.

Then the Milotic strained her eyes, and they began to glow violet. Ivy was far enough away that it shouldn't affect her, but she was still careful about it. Anything close to Mitzi was likely to drop where it stood if they caught sight of the rings of sleeping energy coming from her eyes.

With a cry, Mitzi released the Twister, and it sped toward the Spearow as it faded into a purple shade to match the color of her eyes. It seemed that the rings of energy got swept up in the wind, and if the funnel engulfed the Spearow, it would be pretty hard for it to stay awake.

The bird called out its own challenge as the attack approached, launching itself upward to catch the wind on its wings. It watched the Twister carefully, as if studying it. Then, it started to spin in the air, twirling in an upward spiral. Suddenly it stopped, and a similar-looking wind appeared next to Mitzi's attack. It peeled itself from it, as if a reflection was taken right from a mirror. The only difference was this one was not purple tinted.

Ivy recognized this as Spearow's Mirror Move attack. It could be quite effective in copying what the foe was doing. Unfortunately for it, Spearow didn't have a good enough handle on hypnotic skills to copy that was well. That would work in Kai's favor, however.

The two Twisters raced toward their appropriate targets. Since Milotic was not in the water and took up a lot of space, she wasn't going to be able to get out of the way in time. The thin whirlwind overcame her, and the creature put her head down onto the ground and curled up in an attempt to protect herself. The Ranger thought it looked like it mostly worked. Her scales were pretty tough, and since it was just wind, the thick skin should've protected her mostly.

The Spearow wasn't as lucky. It wasn't fully evolved, so it wasn't as durable as Fearow, its counterpart. It did try to avoid the wind though. Ivy watched it dive down, trying to collect speed as it narrowed itself into a bullet from its high elevation. It just wasn't fast enough though, as the wind eventually caught up with it. It whirled around and around, unable to fly and forced to just follow the current.

Ivy watched as its eyes drooped, though it desperately tried to stay awake. By the time the Twister had ended, the Spearow was out like a light. The wind deposited it softly on the mossy ground, and a little snore could be heard from the bird.

The Ranger was impressed at the combo. Now she just wanted to see what Kai would do next. Since the Spearow was no longer raging, it was probably going to be a lot easier to catch.

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

OOC: Male, I suppose. HIS SHALL BE THE DRILL THAT SHALL PIERCE THE HEAVENS.

Kai released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding when she saw that Milotic had curled herself up and been able to protect herself when the Spearow managed to reflect the Hypnosis-Twister combo back towards them with some clever trickery.

Mirror Move, she realized, as she watched the Spearow unfurl itself and send a decent replica of Milotic's attack right back towards them. I should be more careful next time. She cringed. Even though the Spearow wasn't fully evolved, it still had a lot of tricks up her sleeve. Kai assured herself that even if the Spearow had managed to put Milotic to sleep, the gorgeous sea serpent was proficient enough in her techniques that she could use them in her sleep. Literally. They had tried it before, to decent effect, although she wasn't able to hear Kai's commands and had to attack randomly, which normally had some horrid results...

All the same, Milotic had managed to protect herself from the Spearow both due to the fact that Spearow had not been proficient in the use of Hypnosis, and also because of Milotic's ingenious protection of herself, utilizing her scales as a shield. Kai was reminded with a pang that most of her successes so far weren't even due to her own work, but to her Pokemon. As cheesy as that sounded...

Oh. Right. The battle. Kai had been doing silly things like that far, far too often...

Knowing that the Spearow was asleep, Kai realized that this was her perfect chance to deal as much damage on it as she could without hurting it too badly, and then possibly capture it.

The speed issue would be a problem, she knew. Although Milotic normally could react and attack faster than the average Spearow... she thought... the Spearow had done something tricky before falling asleep. Kai knew that speed was crucial in any battle, and this one was no exception. Often times, it came down to which opponent and competitor could react first.

"Nice one, Mitzi," she said encouragingly to her Milotic. "We're almost there, I think. This one might be a little complicated, but I know that you can do it." She paused, smiling. Milotic had pulled her out of worse situations than a sleeping Spearow, after all. "Start it off with a Psych Up, okay?"

Milotic nodded, staring at the snoozing Spearow intently. Her eyes glowed red as she focused on it, unconsciously mimicing its movements to an extent-- since the Spearow was asleep, Milotic had to rely on her memory to pull off her attack properly... as it was, though, she would have issues using things like her wings in the wind and the like. As it was, Milotic whirled her snaking body through the air, forming loops of tan that glistened in the sunlight, scintilliating whirls of glistening scales. As she slowed down to a halt, Kai could see the gleam in her crimson eyes, as if she could see the world in slow motion. Kai wasn't sure how effective the gambit was, but it seemed to have worked, to some degree. Perhaps she was imagining things, though.

"Right," Kai said, raising her voice to Milotic. "Okay, now for the tricky part... start with a Water Pulse, and then freeze the outer part with an Ice Beam. Just be careful to keep control of the water on the inside, because there's a bit more left after that, okay?"

Milotic nodded, frowning intently. Kai was surprised at how quickly her Pokemon reacted-- after all, Milotic was a giant serpent that weighed roughly three and hundred fifty pounds. Regardless, she quickly formed a sphere of water in her mouth, condensing the water vapor in the air around her. The drop of water in before her swelled as more and more drops joined it, until the water formed a sphere that was roughly the size of Milotic's head, pulsing blue in front of her. Kai knew that if she looked closely, the sphere of water contained nestled layers of spinning rings in the water, whirling with tight gyroscopic rings. Kai knew that Milotic could hit decently well head on, but her sea serpent was also skilled in using moves and combinations that had secondary effects-- things such as Hypnosis, for example. Kai really wasn't sure how the physics worked, but she knew that if her attack hit Spearow, there was a decent chance that he would become confused. Even if he was asleep.

Milotic paused for a second, inhaling deeply while still keeping the sphere of water floating in the air. Kai could almost see the temperature around her Pokemon drop as she somehow froze the air around her. A sphere of pale blue energy winked into existence in front of her open mouth, and she gently exhaled, releasing the frozen energies she had gathered into the sphere.

There was a resounding crack as the surface of the Water Pulse froze in a glistening skin of ice, tendrils of frozen water extending like claws across it. As Kai peered closely at it, she saw water still swirling in the center, beneath roughly four inches of ice. Perfect, Kai thought to herself. Milotic had been among the first Pokemon in her roster; she rarely disappointed.

"Almost there," Kai said encouragingly, feeling her heart tighten. She was aware that the combination she was pulling was horridly unorthodox, and she knew that even Milotic wouldn't be able to follow all of her ramblings at some point. "Okay, now hit the Icy Water Pulse thingy with an Aqua Tail, okay?"

For a heart wrenching moment, Milotic stared blankly back at her. Kai felt herself relax, though, as Milotic again raised her tail into the air, almost as if she was using Twister. This time, though, three rings of water formed around her tail, spinning slightly as Milotic twirled her tail in the air, gathering her water properly and allowing her to gain a better control of the waters around her.

Aiming carefully at the sphere of frozen water in front of her, Milotic swung her tail like a club towards its icy surface. The rings of water around her scales buckled upon meeting the solid, and then rippled away altogether, hitting the ground as they dissolved out of shape and into streams of shimmering water.

Milotic frowned, directing the pulse of water towards Spearow as it flew through the air. Kai knew that not even a Pokemon as careful as careful or gentle as Milotic would be able to strike the Spearow with such accuracy, but she also knew that Milotic could direct the waters at the heart of the sphere with reasonable stability. Kai knew they could have just send the sphere of frozen water towards the Spearow like a normal attack, but the impact of the Aqua Tail gave their attack a bit of extra velocity, as if the attack wasn't already strange enough.

Kai watched as the sphere of ice rushed towards the Spearow, the water within it sloshing as it flew towards the sleeping bird, and then remembered something with a jolt-- she should catch the Pokemon, after all. Somehow, someway, she knew that her attack would be relatively successful and the Spearow would be weak enough for a capture attempt. She decided not to explore into that, although she had a hunch that someone who was very like Ivy but not quite Ivy was talking to someone who was very like Kai but not like Kai. Whatever that was supposed to mean.

All strangeness aside, Kai bent down and grabbed a Park Ball, expanding the metallic sphere in her palm. She hefted it for a moment, wondering if she could actually throw it accurately towards the Spearow, and then just chucked the darn ball in its direction. Kai never really was a fan of baseball, no matter what their last combination resembled, and her aim was usually horrendous... but things had worked out last time, hadn't they?

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Kai watched the sleeping bird for a bit, planning out the next part of her attack. “Nice one, Mitzi,” she said to her Pokémon, encouraging her. “Start off with a Psych Up, okay?”

The Milotic went straight to work, studying up on the Spearow, trying to mimic it's speed from memory. It wasn't acting very fast now as its chest moved up and down with deep sleeping breath. If the bird woke up, it was going to be able to do some damage before the Milotic caught up with it. That was one good thing about being small; Spearow was a lot more maneuverable and quick than the large sea serpent.

After a few moments, it looked like Mitzi had it down pretty well. She was moving faster, her scales gleaming sleekly like she had just been polished. That was going to help her slide around better and negate some of the wind resistance way up here.

Kai smiled, happy. “Okay, now for the tricky part... start with a Water Pulse and then freeze the outer part with an Ice Beam.”

Ivy didn't know what the Trainer was planning, but it was bound to be interesting. The Milotic nodded and frowned as she concentrated. Mitzi took a deep breath and began drawing energy. A sphere of water began to form in her mouth, twisting and twirling around pulsing rings that occupied the center. It eventually grew bigger than she could hold, so she released it to float in front of her.

She held it there and took another breath as the air around her began to fog up from her breath. She carefully exhaled onto the water orb, trying to do as her Trainer asked. Ivy found herself holding her breath and clenching her hands too, hoping that it would work out like they planned.

The water crackled and popped as the edges began to freeze, and the surface of the orb changed from flowing smooth to crackly where the water had fought the ice. The sun shone off the ripples, creating small rainbows in the edges. The water was still flowing like it was supposed to on the other side of the ice, so the plan was working.

“Almost there,” Kai said a little worriedly. Ivy didn't blame her; this combo was a little long. “Okay, now hit the Icy Water Pulse thingy with an Aqua Tail, okay?”

The Milotic took a long look at Kai, and Ivy worried for a second that she didn't understand what to do. Then the sea snake resumed her action, raising her tail into the air like she did before. Rings of water faded into existence around the fins, and they grew in strength as they swirled, preparing to hit. She swung her tail hard, meeting her frozen water creation. The two connected with a sharp crack as the attack went sailing, though Ivy saw her cringe a little as she settled back down. Then the Ranger saw the frosty bits clinging to Milotic's tail. Her attacks must've been pretty powerful in order to stick like that.

As the attack rushed toward the bird, Kai pulled out a Parkball and got it ready to throw. Now was as good a time as any. After the attack, even if the bird woke up, it would be very weak.

Then, the icy ball slammed into the bird, sending it flying. It didn't wake. Kai saw this and threw her ball at the same time. It flew through the air and it the bird before it could fall and possibly get hurt, snatching it up in a red flash.

The ball fell to the edge of a platform as it began to shake. It rolled slightly forward, and Ivy cringed as it fell down to the ledge below. The drop was only three or so feet, but she remembered when she was a little girl and the same thing happened to the family camera. It had hit just perfectly so the film popped out, destroying the pictures they had taken. She didn't want the same thing to happen so the Spearow escaped.

The ball hit with a heavy thunk, but it stayed close. It even stopped shaking, and then a ping sounded as the center turned red.

“Hey, cool, there's another one,” Ivy said, going over to pick that one up too. She dropped it in her pocket along with the other one and turned back to Kai. “Still wanna go to the waterfall?”

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

((OOC: It's kinda sad that I took damage from attacking a poor, defenseless, sleeping basic. I gotta work on that. =X))

Kai's heart dropped as she watched the ball hit the Spearow, enveloping it (the good part), and then promptly roll off of the cliff (the arguably not-so-good part). Kai almost screamed in horror, both with the thought that she had lost the Spearow and with the other thought that a fall off of Outer Heaven in a Pokeball would arguably kill the poor bird, when she heard a soft, reassuring, metallic thunk. Oh, good, there's always next time to throw things off of cliffs... she thought quietly to herself. She relaxed slightly, and then craned her neck to watch the ball shudder in the tufts of grass. Apparently, that was all that trainers were supposed to do during a capture scenario. She wasn't sure. School only got her so far.

<Ping,> Fred said in her mind.

    "Waitwhat."

Ping. The ball clicked shut, and the red light stopped glowing. "Oh. Right. You can see the future, can't you?"

    He snickered. <Sure.>

"Mind telling me how this run turns out? Like, if I die or anything? I mean, after all, I did catch this Spearow just for you..." she sighed.

He paused for a moment. <Nah,> he decided. <It'd be really unfair, wouldn't it? And besides, I don't really feel like it...>

Kai sighed, and then turned her attention to the real world. Ivy had pocketed the Spearow for the time being -- obviously, they didn't want Kai stealing her captures and running amok with them in the park -- and approached, saying, “Hey, cool, there's another one.” Kai beamed shyly as Ivy continued, “Still wanna go to the waterfall?”

Ooh, the waterfall. Wrapped up as she had been with Fred and the Spearow, Kai had almost forgotten about it. Still, it never hurt to explore a bit, right? "Sure," she said happily. "Oh, wait." She turned to Milotic, smiling slightly. "You did great," she said with a grin. "Okay, one last thing. Heal yourself up with a Recover, okay?"

Milotic nodded with a cheerful "Miiiiii!" and then closed her eyes, her red eyebrows twitching as she concentrated. Suddenly, her body glowed with a muted green light, shimmering in the sunlight. Bruises, scratches, and any other mishaps that she had received during her scuffle with the Spearow began to flicker and then vanish. Kai had no idea how the process worked, and she didn't think she would understand, even if another Pokemon like Fred were to tell her. After all, if humans could pull it off, they would end up being immortal or something strange like that.

The light faded, and Milotic emerged, beaming and looking fully recovered, although Kai couldn't be sure. "I don't think you'd want to walk with us to the waterfall," she explained sheepishly as she held up Mitzi's Pokeball. "It's a bit dry, so traveling might be rough and all." Milotic nodded, inclining her head, and then allowed herself to be recalled in a flash of red light.

Kai clipped the Pokeball back on her belt, and then turned to Ivy with a smile. "I'd love to visit the waterfall," she said earnestly. "Could you lead the way?"

“Sure,” Kai said, and the happiness she felt could be heard in her voice. That was the ultimate goal here. “You did great,” she said to her Milotic, and the Pokémon beamed. “Okay, one last thing. Heal yourself up with a Recover, okay?”

The Pokémon cried out cheerfully before closing her eyes and concentrating. She drew energy to herself and gleamed a pale green for a second as her wounds closed up. The scratches disappeared and she looked more energized after she was gone. Kai then returned her to her Pokéball, saying that it'd be a rather difficult and bumpy walk for the snake.

Ivy agreed, and at Kai's words, she heaved herself up onto the other ledge the Spearow had first hit, holding out a hand for the Trainer. The Poképlayer called out again for a Skarmory in that scratchy metal voice. The Ranger helped the Trainer up and then they were on their way.

The falling water got louder as they neared. It was still around several other platforms of foliage that blocked the way though. The river was the first thing they came upon, flowing steadily away from the falls in order to reach the edge of the Outer Heavens and fall into nothingness. It flowed peacefully. The land was a little low here, which made for slower flow. That was good, just in case someone fell in. It wouldn't do to have them swept off the supported island altogether.

A chirping drew her attention to the water. A small cream and brown bird was chattering at something in the water from a rock perched in the middle of the river. Ivy could barely see, but it looked like...a Bidoof? What in the world was that doing up here?

They got closer, and the (what she thought was) beaver Pokémon disappeared under the water. The bird then turned to them. “Pidgey!” it cried.

“What about one of those?” Ivy asked the Trainer. “I think they're pretty cute.”

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

((OOC: useless reply is silly, but lol. LIFE MAKES SENSE AGAIN.))

Kai pulled herself up on to the ledge, marveling at both the size and beauty of the area around Outer Heaven. A river snaked lazily past her, and Kai smiled at the relaxing sound of the flowing water. A couple months back, she had been the Water Dojo Sensei, a position that had ended horribly... but her affinity for water still remained. Kinda. Although the water was flowing slowly, it didn't look like a dip in the river would be the most enjoyable or least embarrassing thing to happen in the park.

Kai noticed a splash in the water, but she didn't really think about it. She had a nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach that there was a reference or something that had been made a long time ago, like, during the Honchcrow battle long ago, that she was supposed to get, but her mind was empty. She honestly couldn't remember what it was...

No matter, back to the actual stuff. She got the feeling that she was about as focused as a kid chugging sugar would be, which wasn't really the best mindset on top of a floating island in the sky. Oh, a Pidgey...

Fred nearly jumped with excitement. <All are c->

    "OHGODNO."

    <*throws cat*>

"Whatwhat." She instinctively shied back from the threat of a large feline being thrown in her face, but no such creature came. And then, "Oh, god, the run. Ivy's gonna think I'm nuts..." Jerking back to reality, Kai shook her head, knowing that she would get no rest from Fred if she captured the Pidgey and brought it back. Trying to hide the trepidation from her voice and the insults that Fred was muttering darkly in her head, she forced a cheery smile and said, "No thanks, Ivy. The little guy is kinda cute, but..." <ALL ARE--> She cringed. "Yeah, no thanks. Sorry..."

Self consciously, Kai dipped her hand into her pack to reach for a Pokedoll to throw at the Pidgey in the event that it decided to be hostile and not let them pass. After all, it was a Pidge...y... best to be careful, right? She pulled the plushy doll out and squeezed it, unsure if it would work or not if need be.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

“No thanks, Ivy. This guy is kinda cute, but...”

Ivy understood. Pidgey were used in some places as a paper mail carrier, and they were fairly common outside of the Park. She was sure if Kai wanted one, she could obtain one pretty easily than initiating a battle with a Pokémon here. It's safe her on supplies, time, and the energy of her partners.

She turned to lead them away when Haxbat made a warning sound behind her. She stopped and turned, watching the Pidgey jump off its rock and fly around in front of them, blocking their path. Ivy shook her head. “Looks like this one's not wanting to leave.”

She saw Kai reach into her pocket, and she looked back to see the small form of a Pokédoll. The girl held it out to the bird, and it immediately responded. It flew over and plucked it right out of her hands, shuffling backwards through the air. It wobbled, as they were of comparable size. Then, it tried to rearrange and get a better grip on it. With a pop, it accidentally popped the cord that inflated the device, and the added weight dragged the bird down to the ground with it.

Huffing, the bird chattered at the doll, as if it could actually understand its annoyance. Then it went to work grooming it, so Ivy figured it would be okay. They managed to slide around it without any more trouble.

They came to another ledge, or more of a hilly area, really. A miniature falls flowed over the nearest one, but the sound it made was only fraction of what the real one could do. “Almost there, Kai,” she said, pointing in the general direction of their destination.

Then, a cooing drew her attention back to the small waterfall. A spindly tree branch was sticking under the falls, maybe drawn to the water. Sitting on it was a large owl Pokémon, looking a little shorter than she was. It called out to them again, twisting its head down farther than Ivy thought it should be able to go.

“Well, there's a Noctowl. Any interest in capturing it?”

Noctowl. Huh. Kai knew that the large, owlish Pokemon in front of her evolved from Hootoot, but the resemblance wasn't really there. Oh well. It was Pokemon, after all. Nothing ever really made sense.

Regardless, she wasn't the biggest fan of the owl Pokmeon. They weren't really the most affectionate creatures, and they kinda creeped her out, although she did know a couple of people who had raised their creepy owl deals exceptionally well. As it was, though, Kai was kinda in a hurry and didn't have time to stop and battle said Noctowl, especially now.

"I'd rather not," she said sheepishly, shifting her weight as she pulled out a Pokedoll from her pack in the event that the Noctowl proved to be as clingy as the Pidgey. She prepared to walk away, ready to throw the Pokedoll or whatever in case they wouldn't be able to escape well. "Sorry for having to run from all of my encounters," she added, the tips of her ears turning pink.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Kai didn't have an interest in the Noctowl, which didn't really surprise Ivy that much, seeing how she passed up the Hoothoot earlier. Sometimes this family of Pokémon really freaked some people out. Then again, Kai might be in a hurry or something.

They turned to go, and she readied another Pokédoll, just in case. The path they needed to take to get up the ledge went by the crooked tree, so they continued carefully. Ivy kept her eyes on the creature as they got closer. Carved steps out of the earth were right in front of them when the bird suddenly ruffled its feathers in warning, puffing up a little.

Ivy slowed, but she didn't stop, hoping to just edge by it quickly. It made a semi-growling noise though, and it spread its wings and flapped a few times, catching a few sprays of water and splashing the tree. She sighed. “Alright, Kai, I think we better use the doll just to be safe. Wouldn't want it to attack us or something. Birds can be vicious.”

Kai handed the doll over and Ivy got as close as she dared, placing the doll in the crook of the trunk and the branch Noctowl was sitting on. The bird unruffled its feathers then, calming down. Ivy took a breath of relief.

Then, they went up the steps. They were pretty close to the Waterfall now. She could hear it crashing against the rocks and into the pool she knew was there, though she hadn't seen it since she first had her training for being a Ranger. Before they could get there though, a small bird swooped in.

It landed on her head with a plop, and she heard Haxbat growl in warning. She waved the Crobat off and tried to shoosh the bird off of her. In response, it jumped onto Kai's head. Ivy then could get a look at it. The thing was only about a foot tall, mostly blue with red on its face and white on its belly. It chirped happily, bouncing in place, and Ivy laughed a little. It then jumped off and landed on a rock next to them, still bouncing happily.

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

Kai smiled at the cute little bird before her, but she knew that she didn't have any intention to capture it. Guilt nagged in the pit of her stomach for having to skip so many encounters, but she really didn't want to battle this Taillow, as adorable as it was.

She reached into her back for a third Pokedoll, just in case, and froze. Oh, crap. There weren't any left. She had only brought two on her expedition, foolishly thinking that it would be enough... now that she thought about it, though, she realized that two wouldn't have been nearly enough. Hindsight was always 20/20...

"I have to pass this little guy up, too," Kai said to Ivy, cringing inside. "But I'm out of dolls..." she pulled out a wad of cash from her pocket-- apparently, that's what all trainers did-- and began counting out wrinkled bills. If she had read the brochure correctly, she was allowed to purchase a doll from Ivy for $500. For the moment, she wasn't broke, but her money had literally been vanishing from before her eyes... strange. Still, she held her five hundred dollars in her left hand, ready to purchase a doll from Ivy if she had to. "Could I buy one from you if the Taillow doesn't let us pass?"

She really did feel bad for not being able to battle all of them...

(OOC: Voice Disk didn't work ._. And the escape roll failed too. You can just subtract 500 from your stats right away. I say tab during the roleplay just because I think exchanging money during a run is tacky. Sowwy.)

“I have to pass this little guy up too,” she said. She also added that she was out of her own dolls. That wasn't a problem. Rangers carried a few extras just in case. This actually happened a lot. Some Trainers didn't even bring any dolls in with them. Ivy was a little surprised Kai had to begin with, seeing how this was her first run. They only recently became available in the shop.

“Sure, it's no problem. Instead of exchanging money now though, I'll run you a tab on my phone and you can settle up when we get back to the Outpost.”

Trying to be positive, she tried to lead them away from the area. There was one more set of steps to take before getting to the waterfall. She could hear the roaring water easily now, and it made everything else a little harder to hear. As they were walking away though, the loud screeching was definitely audible.

Ivy turned with a frown at the noisy bird. Such a small thing to make so much noise. “Bah, looks like we better use one of these,” she said, reaching into a pocket in her cargos for the small, Clefairy-shaped doll. She pulled the little string to inflate it, easily making it the same size as the little bird. She set it down next to the rock as the Taillow inspected it, and it let them back up.

The Ranger grabbed her phone and started the tab, shaking her head at the bird once more before clipping the device back onto her belt. “Sorry about that,” she said. “I hope the rest of them aren't like this.” She knew how expensive a run could get.

Ivy led them up the last set of stairs, and when everyone was clear, she paused for a minute just to take in the sights. The massive waterfall towered over them, spraying down white and blue ribbons of water from the rocky, moss-covered cliff side. It fell into the wide, oval pool below, churning the surface and causing the flow to come towards them, forming a river that went back the way they came.

Foliage of all sorts covered the area. The lawn was green and well-kept, and tropical trees dotted the field. The water was surrounded by ferns and pretty blue and violet flowers, and the sun made the water sparkle. She could see why the wild Pokémon liked it so much. She made a note to come back here more often. Haxbat chattering behind her told her he agreed.

Then, the serenity was broken by an old, scratchy cry, and Ivy immediately darted her eyes upward as her giant Crobat took off, looking for the source. A wide, ominous-shaped shadow sailed through the water and onto the land in front of them, darting across to one of the nearby trees. A gray form landed on top, opening its wide maw to give them a battle challenge while showing off its perfectly sharp teeth.

It had bat-like wings on its arms that it flapped defiantly, showing the purple webbing between them. A triangle-spiked tail wagged back and forth as it eyed them up. The prehistoric Fossil Pokémon, Aerodactyl.

“Wow, how lucky,” Ivy said, watching the dragon-like dinosaur. “Those are really rare. Trainers come here all the time looking for one, but few ever find one. Wanna give it a shot?”

    Default Re: Individual RP: Kai-Mei

    ((OOC: 27,500 - 500 = 27,000.

    Also... <3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... ONE ONE!11!. XD))

“Oh, right, a tab,” Kai muttered distractedly, watching as Ivy pulled out her phone and began punching in numbers. She made a mental note not to forget any about the money, and then she’d pay up at the outpost. Exchanging money on a park run [i]was[i] rather tacky, after all, and it looked a bit like bribery…

Kai shook the thoughts out of her head as the Taillow finally let them pass after they had chucked an inflatable doll at it. “It’s okay,” she said with a smile to Ivy. “It’s kinda nice to see the wildlife around here…” Her wallet didn’t seem to agree with her. Oh well.

They climbed up the final set of stairs—at this point, her legs were really starting to burn—and then they stopped at the top. The waterfall was enormous, sending cascades of crystal clear blue and white water down a mossy cliff face. In the center, the water gathered in an oval pool that churned at the surface and twisted into the river along which they had been walking. The trees were gorgeous, and tiny ferns and blue and violet flowers sprouted near her sneakers. Kai almost did a cliché gasp of admiration, looking around with wide eyes. She wondered if she was allowed to use her camera to take a picture of the gorgeous scenery, but she had a feeling that it was strictly for wild Pokémon, only.

<Darn right,> Fred muttered in her mind. <Jeez, do you even read those park magazines?>

“Aren’t you supposed to be somewhere?” she retorted, mildly annoyed. “Like, there was that Abomasnow and that volcano and then… oh, never mind.”

<You know I can see into the future, right?>

“As you remind me fourteen times a day, yes.” She was torn between admiring the wildlife and talking to the psycho Deoxys in her head. An interesting enough conundrum.

He paused. <I knew you’d say that,> he said finally. Another pause. Kai had just began to retort when he added, <And you’re about to tell me to shut up and go.>

“That wouldn’t require psychic powers to see coming, though,” Kai replied with a wry smile.

<True…> he muttered dejectedly. She could sense him brightening, though, and then he added, <Oh, and I highly suggest you cover your ears.>

    “Waitwhat.”

    <Toodles!>

“Wait!” she shouted in her head, trying to grasp along the mental link. Since she wasn’t a psychic, it didn’t work out so well. “What the heck is that supposed to—”

An archaic cry silenced her, almost deafening in the echoing valley. Kai’s mouth fell open in a perfect ‘o’ of surprise as she felt like the recognized it. Turning around, the back of her neck prickling, Kai watched as a web-winged shadow descended from the sky, skimming across the water and perching easily on one of the ancient trees. Its roar was primal, stirring a strange, dormant sense in the pit of her stomach that vaguely wanted to make her puke, and then run for her life.

The creature roared again, its dragon-ish wings flaring open in defiance, perfectly showcasing its deadly, serrated teeth. The sea of points clashed in white as it flicked its triangular tail, eying her with amber eyes.

Kai recognized it, but only from books and a few of those park brochures that she had read when she was trying to find a place to go. She had settled on Outer Heaven for a couple of reasons, but this was certainly one of them.

No picture, however, could have prepared her for the magnificence of the rock titan, Aerodactyl.

Ivy’s eyes were fixated on the dinosaur. “Wow, how lucky. Those are really rare. Trainers come here all the time looking for one, but few ever find one. Wanna give it a shot?”

<You’re welcome,> Fred said smugly. <I totally called this, by the way.>

She didn’t even bother giving him a response. In reality, an Aerodactyl had really been the reason that she had wanted to enter Outer Heavens. She had also come for a Skarmory, but that dream had rapidly seemed to fail (as she noticed wryly), and the scenery wasn’t something to laugh at, either. However, Aerodactyl had certainly been one of the main attractions that the Park had offered to her. Kai had tried writing looking for a few on her own time, but they had proved far too rare for her to find, and she had found herself lacking in time as of late. She hadn’t really been too hopeful about finding one, however, and was amazed that she had gotten so lucky this time around. If she remembered correctly, there was a horridly low chance of an Aerodactyl’s appearing to any trainer or ranger, and there weren’t helpful things such as voice disks to ease the chances.

Kai gaped. For once, she had actually gotten lucky.

She definitely wasn’t going to botch this up, and there wasn’t going to be any of that random throwing business as she had with Spearow. She knew from some basic research that most Aerodactyl were primal, feral beings, almost identical to their prehistoric counterparts. It certainly wouldn’t play nice just because she was a trainer, and if Kai slipped up, there was a reasonably large chance that her Pokémon would pay the price in more than a few minor injuries.

Kai ran through the choices in her head. Huggles, or Dragonite (she really wanted to change that nickname, now…) was somewhat ideal, due to her ability to fly and keep track of Aerodactyl if the battle took to the skies. However, the Dragonite wasn’t as proficient on her wings as Kai had hoped, and an aerial battle would be much more difficult when it came to commanding her Pokémon. Kai knew that at ten thousand feet in the air, her commands weren’t going to really be heard all that well. The Aerodactyl would have no such problems, though, and it wouldn’t have to wait for the sound to travel before it attacked. If sound traveled at three hundred and forty-three feet per second, give or take depending on humidity and other air factors, at an altitude of ten thousand feet, it would take roughly… ugh, she hated doing mental math. Hurriedly juggling calculations, she figured it’d be roughly thirty seconds…

<Twenty-nine and one trillion, five hundred forty-five billion, one hundred eighty-nine million, five hundred four thousand, three hundred seventy-three trillionths,> Fred said smugly. <At least I actually can do math.>

“Fine, that many seconds,” Kai said distractedly. “I’m sorry, but I really gotta—”

<Yeah, yeah, go save the park and all that jazz,> he said. <Just remember… Fred.>

…barring that unpleasant interruption, Kai knew that an aerial battle would be out of the question, even if Huggles could fly perfectly. Thirty seconds, or whatever number Fred had spewed, would be too long of a delay. Even five seconds was more than enough for the Aerodactyl to sink its serrated fangs into Huggles’s delicate wing membranes and send her plummeting to the ground. Kai had a few healing potions in her bag, but she didn’t want to have to use them unless it was necessary.

Milotic was another option, and the pool of water would greatly help her speed since she wasn’t on land. Not to mention that her powerful water attacks would work better on the rock lizard Aerodactyl. Kai glanced at the oval-shaped pool again, biting her lip in concentration. Milotic could probably fit in it—after all, she was a rather large sea serpent—but something told her against it. Milotic was good at taking hits, but Aerodactyl was notorious for its speed. In terms of sheer swiftness, it was up there with Jolteon and Crobat, some of the fastest Pokémon. The only Pokémon that she could thing of who was capable of outspeeding an Aerodactyl, actually, was Fred, and that didn’t really count, being that he was the psychic master of the cosmos or whatever. There was a rather large possibility that Milotic could be left in the dust, too.

It was funny, now that she thought about it. Kai had spent a lot of time hoping for an Aerodactyl, but now that she had found one, she had no idea how she was supposed to encounter it. It helped, she guessed, that two of her Pokémon had already battled in the Park, so she could have some help in her decision.

With Mitzi and Huggles having very good reasons not to fight, not to mention their mild exhaustion, Kai’s thoughts turned to Nix. The Rotom had currently wedged itself in her freezer, literally possessing it. Obviously, in Pokémon physics, that gave the eccentric little ghost the ability to shoot what Kai could only describe as a massive blizzard from between those double doors, not to mention a whole array of electric and ghost-like attacks. In addition, the Rotom had a plethora of status inducing attacks that would certainly aid in weakening Aerodactyl. Had there not been some new discoveries regarding Rotom, Kai wouldn’t have hesitated in sending out Nix. However, studies had shown that Rotom now took on a different typing when possessing an appliance, instead of its typical ghost-electric typing. For some reason that even Fred could not understand, Nix began exhibiting characteristics of an ice-type whenever it was in its Fridge/Freezer/Frost Forme, and it shared their weaknesses. Namely, the weakness to rock types. Kai hated bringing type advantages and disadvantages into question, but she really couldn’t afford to take any risks with this Aerodactyl. She didn’t want to become the first trainer to die in the National Park, after all. Kai doubted that Ivy would let it go that far (in fact, she seriously doubted it), but she didn’t want to have anyone get seriously injured while she was around.

That left Starmie. The magnificent, purple, ten-pointed star was a gift from a friend that she hadn’t even known that well, but it had become one of the most useful members on her team. It had the strange ability to wield almost every kind of elemental attack, along with some impressive psychic powers (although it had proven unable, or just too creeped out, to talk to Kai like Fred did) and near-mastery over water attacks. Through her months at the water dojo, Starmie had quickly become one of her most used members during challenges, and it had rarely disappointed her. Even during the Honchkrow incident—Kai shuddered—it had still taken down two or three Pokémon on its lonesome before falling to the dreadful black turkey-thing. With its speed and versatility, it might be able to hold its own against Aerodactyl… a plan was already forming in her mind.

She smiled quietly, grabbing Starmie’s Pokéball from her belt and tossing it to the ground. In a flash of white light, the purple starfish creature appeared, its ten points waving and shining scintillatingly in the light. The magnificent gem at its core glistened a deep ruby red in the sunlight, and it tinkled melodically, its own little battle cry.

A little late, Kai finally understood Fred’s message. Of course he would want her to use Fred, but Starmie-Fred, not Deoxys-Fred… stuff actually made sense now.

Kai shook those thoughts, too, from her mind as she turned to face the Aerodactyl. Somehow, despite lacking eyes, Starmie did the same. Kai blamed it on the creatures psychic powers with a slight grin. Fixing her eyes on the Aerodactyl’s, Kai began to think. Its roar earlier had been unnerving, and she quickly thought back to what she had learned regarding the species. She knew that Aerodactyl could have one of two special abilities: it could either exude massive amounts of pressure, startling its enemies—after all, it was a massive, prehistoric dinosaur—or it could use its same primordial presence to strike fear in the hearts of its opponent, greatly unnerving them. Either way, it wouldn’t be the best for Starmie to fight thusly hindered… but Kai had a plan.

She wasn’t altogether unfamiliar with the uses of Skill Swap, actually. It had served her incredibly well when facing pesky electric types. In essence, a user with decent mastery of their psychic powers could actually switch some of its vital skills with its opponent. Every Pokémon had such skills, but some were more useful than others. Kai had always loved being able to have Starmie swap its ability with unsuspecting Electivire, giving the purple star the ability to actually absorb the electric volts that were often sent in its direction and make it faster. The same worked, to a limited degree against Jolteon, although that was more tricky… but Kai just really loved the looks on their faces when they pulled something like that off. It was like a troll face… but even better.

As it was, Starmie’s current ability was an interesting one. It had the power to cure itself of any status ailments upon leaving battle or being recalled, essentially allowing itself to heal indefinitely by the method of using Rest and then switching out.

However, in the National Park, where potions were allowed and rules weren’t exactly given, Starmie’s ability to cure itself wasn’t really useful to a wild Pokémon, especially one like Aerodactyl. It lacked the ability to switch out with an ally, and it couldn’t recall itself. However, the unnerving pressure that it created around it was already making Kai uneasy, and it was probably having the same effect on Starmie.

“Start things off with a Skill Swap, Starmie,” she said calculatingly, studying the Aerodactyl perched in the tree. “Keep it simple and keep your distance—we don’t know what that thing is capable of, yet.”

She could have sworn that she had heard Starmie nod or do something in recognition, and it seemed to oblige. Starmie rarely showed its emotions, often staying calm in even the most dire of situations, and Kai had grown to accept that. It was nice to have a sane psychic Pokémon, after all… Fred certainly didn’t count.

Starmie floated over to the pool on a tiny burst of psychic power. It wasn’t the best on the ground, but it could manage between a complicated system of manipulating its psychic energies and just screwing around with the laws of physics. However, Kai knew that Starmie preferred being in the water—there, at least, it might be able to outpace the large rock-dragon: few creatures in the world could be faster than a Starmie underwater.

Spinning the back set of its five points to propel itself, Starmie rocketed through the water, a trail of bubbles in its wake. It paused about halfway into the pull and resurfaced, shooting out of the water with a splash and pausing to hover roughly a foot above the crystalline surface, the tip of its gem glowing a pale purple color. The purple light lanced around inside of the ruby red gem as it faced the Aerodactyl, obviously concentrating hard. A faint, glowing beam of purple light cheerfully arced from the center of Starmie’s jewel core towards Aerodactyl, skipping across the surface of the water and bouncing merrily around before making contact with the winged dinosaur, coating its entire body in a purple light.

Starmie held the position for a couple of moments, and Kai felt herself cringe in anticipation. Normally, Skill Swap didn’t take this long to operate, and it also gave Aerodactyl enough time for a blinding counter attack. She tried to reassure herself that the attack was only taking this long because Starmie was unsure about the Aerodactyl’s abilities—after all, they had never tried switching abilities with an extinct dinosaur—and things were going fine.

“Hit it with a Thunder Wave—especially if it comes near you, and then get under the water!” Kai called out, her knuckles turning white with worry. She knew that Starmie had a wide range of electrical attacks, including Thunderbolt and even Thunder, both of which would potentially deal large amounts of damage to the Aerodactyl, but Kai was uneasy about using their power. Distracted as Starmie was attempting to swap abilities, it probably wouldn’t be able to manage any attack more powerful than a Thunder Wave. Plus, there was the additional fact that they were close to a large lake—using such powerful attacks at such a close proximity to a conductor like that would be devastating, not only to Starmie but to the rest of the wildlife. Kai knew that doing something as stupid as using Thunder in a river would probably injure any Pokémon in the water… she shuddered at the thought, remembering how far back the river stretched.

Starmie trilled a musical response, and a tiny wave of electricity started forming between its two topmost points. The fizzling blue electricity crackled and then arced down towards the beam of purple light connecting Starmie to Aerodactyl, wrapping itself around and bulleting towards the prehistoric rock-bird. Kai smiled at Starmie’s brilliance—the beam that Skill Swap entailed was wrapped around the Aerodactyl. While the prehistoric Pokémon could still move, it allowed Starmie to not have to focus on precisely aiming not one but two attacks towards it. In essence, it was using the beam from Skill Swap to direct its Thunder Wave attack at Aerodactyl, giving the star Pokémon more time to focus on the task of switching abilities.

As the pulse of electrical energy surged across the purple ray of light like a power cable, Starmie’s core stopped glowing and the beam of light on its end began to fade, breaking the connection between the two. The purple end by Starmie began to playfully coil after the Thunder Wave attack, spiraling slowly through the air, following the Thunder Wave like a shooting star.

At the center of the lake, Starmie did what was as close to a roar as it could, although the sound of playful bell chimes greatly detracted from the overall scariness. Kai wasn’t sure of the Skill Swap had worked correctly, and the Thunder Wave was still at least half a second from the Aerodactyl. In most situations, it wouldn’t be enough time to react, but Aerodactyl was blindingly fast. She couldn’t help but commend Starmie at the brilliant move it had used, targeting Aerodactyl with the last vestiges of its Skill Swap attack… perhaps, they might actually have a chance against this thing.

Starmie prepared to sink underneath the water. They had practiced this before, and using the water as a shield could be useful. She had heard cases of Aerodactyl swimming before, but she couldn’t imagine that this one would willingly dive into a lake against a methodical and powerful Starmie… or at least, that was what she hoped. Kai bit her lip in anticipation.

She was still hopeful, at least.
