    As the words slid out of my mouth, my Ranger's expression seemed to soften. It may have been my apologizing or it could have been something he saw on the file which he pulled out briefly. Either way, his opinion seemed to have changed for the better.

    He grinned at my comment and sprinted in order to catch up to me. "Ah, I dunno, I'm not very good at formal Pokemon battling," I said. "I mean, Dual is pretty powerful, but it seems to me that you're a bit of a Gliscor fan, and that would be a bad match-up on my part."

    His Gallade grunted, seemingly stating that he would like the challenge and I had to restrain myself from laughing.

    I followed him as he led the way around the lake.

    After a little while, we came upon a thicket along the coast. I was busy trying not to be sabered by the barbs, when Chainy tapped my shoulder.

    "There's a Buizel up ahead, do you want to try and capture it?" he asked me. "Remember, you don't have to fight it, we can always just try to move past it if you're not interested."

    I blanked out during the second part of the sentence as I was attempting to discern the water weasel Pokemon from the sand. I managed to succeed and was pleased to see that it was doing something cool. I quickly unpacked my camera and aimed it at the scene with its "Hyper Zoom" mode.

    The Buizel slammed into the rocks in a torrent of water and I snapped the picture simultaneously.

    OOC: I'm assuming you don't want to battle it, so moving on.

    No sooner were the words out of my mouth than Kyle had pulled out his camera. He took a little while to zoom in and centre the shot, and then he pressed the button just as the Buizel slammed into a rock. I shrugged. There was no way he'd be able to sell a picture of such a common Pokemon, but maybe he just wanted it for himself.

    After he had taken the picture, I decided to leave us away from the Buizel. If we went near it, it might decide to challenge us, and I was pretty sure Kyle didn't want to. We moved inland, towards a saltwater lake. On our way there, however, I saw another Pokemon. A Croagunk was picking at a berry bush, eating the ripe ones and stamping on the rotting ones, clearly enjoying the squishing sounds they made. I turned to Kyle.

    "How about a Croagunk? Feel like trying to capture one of them?" I asked him.

    OOC: Correct.

    As I took the picture, Chainy started leading me off away from the Buizel and towards a salty lake. We were walking along nonchalantly, when my Ranger stopped so abruptly that I nearly ran into him.

    "How about a Croagunk? Feel like trying to capture one of them?" he asked me.

    I peered over his shoulder and, sure enough, there was a frog Pokemon hopping up and down on some rotten berries, enjoying the squelching sounds they made. He was also eating a few ripe ones.

    "Gliscor!" I called out, hurling a Pokeball into the air, "let's start this battle! Attack it as fast as possible with a Night Slash!"

    Similar to the Wooper incident earlier, Gliscor's claws glowed with an eerily dark aura as it swooped down onto the Croagunk.

    "Gliscor, let's start this battle! Attack it as fast as possible with a Night Slash!" Kyle called out. His Gliscor swooped down from above, its claws covered in blackness like before. He screeched in an eerie way as it approached the Croagunk.

    The Croagunk heard the screech and turned to look. It's eyes opened wide as it saw its incoming attacker, and it instinctively shuddered upon realising that the opponent was a Flying type. It tried to drop to the ground and avoid the attack, but the Gliscor was too fast. He raked his claws as he swooped past, leaving distinctive marks on the Croagunk's back. But the Croagunk wasn't going to take this without striking back. Even as it was being attacked, it clasped his hands together so it looked like it was praying. Then, the second the Gliscor was looking away, it spun on its knees and breathed a blue mist at the Gliscor. The Gliscor was struck by the fast-moving fog, and he screeched unhappily. With a tremendous flap of his wings, he flew high into the sky and away from the Icy Wing attack.

    I raised my eyebrows in surprise. Not many Croagunk knew Icy Wind. This might turn out to be a very interesting battle.

    OOC: Male, please. And does this mean that it'll automatically have Ice Wind because I really want this guy.

    Gliscor swooped in and landed a hit, raking its claws down the Croagunk's back. The poison dart frog Pokemon seemed to glance the blow off as it readied a reprisal. Gliscor was going to swoop back to me, but something was wrong. An icy fog flooded out from the Croagunk's mouth and connected with my Pokemon, slowing it with the intense chill.

    I was astonished, and apparently my Ranger was, too. I had no idea that this Pokemon could learn such a move and I was caught off guard.

    "Gliscor!" I called to him. "Hit the Croagunk with your Quickest of Attacks to throw it into the air. While you are sky high, grab him and slam him into the ground to cause a force like an Earthquake, but hold back!I want this little guy for my own."

    It was a complicated setup, but if it was performed properly, it would be devastating. Gliscor may have had frost coating his wings and slowing him down, but a swift attack skyward would change the tables and if Gliscor would be able to complete it and slam the foe into the ground, it would work to epic perfection.

    Gliscor circled around, so he was moving quickly towards the Croagunk again. Suddenly, he blurred forward, almost doubling his speed. The Croagunk wasn't fast enough to avoid it - the Gliscor slammed into him and picked him up into the air. The Croagunk's hands started glowing purple, and he hammered the Gliscor all over. Despite this, the Gliscor did not let go. He struggled to rise a bit higher, and then suddenly started falling to earth. The Croagunk realised what was happening and he stopped his assault to try and shake free, but it was no good. Both Pokemon slammed hard into the ground, except Gliscor let go at the last second so he could skim away relatively unscathed.

    The Croagunk picked itself up off the ground and croaked a challenge. It then assumed a martial arts pose, attempting to be ready for whatever was coming next.

    OOC: Pity, that'd be way cool.

    My Gliscor nodded its consent and circled around, so he was facing the Croagunk again. Suddenly, he charged forwardin a blur of purplish color, almost doubling his speed. The Croagunk wasn't fast enough to avoid it and Gliscor slammed into him and picked him up into the air. While he was carrying his foe into the air, the Croagunk's hands started glowing purple, and he hammered the Gliscor all over in a dangerous Poison Jab. Despite this, the Gliscor did not let go. He struggled to rise a bit higher, and then suddenly started falling to earth. The Croagunk realised what was happening and he stopped his assault to try and shake free, but escape from my trustworthy Gliscor's claws was futile. The Croagunk was slammed into the ground as Gliscor let go at the last second so he could skim away relatively unscathed.

    The Croagunk picked itself up out of the samll crater in the ground and croaked a challenge. He then assumed a martial arts pose, in an attempt to be ready for whatever was coming next.

    I contemplated deeply on what to do next. I had no moves that would inflict only a status problem on the foe.

    "What to do, what to do?" I muttered to myself. There was no way that this would be any easier. Unless, of course, I was very, very lucky.

    A brief flashback of my first battle reminded me of how necessary planning was.

    It was at least a year ago. I had started out with Gligar at a small town on an island in the middle of no where. I was running around, playing with my brand-new pal, frolicking in the general area of a meteor crash site (which I was totally clueless about at the age of ten) when I saw my childhood friend and his starter Piplup being chased about by a small red Pokemon that looked vaguely similar to a duck. I checked ay Pokedex as the new creature spat small streams of fire at the two. The machine told me about its Fire type qualities and other useful tidbits about how it evolves and the like. I formulated a plan and charged.

    The Magby then initiated a battle with me. It was a long fought battle where I tried my hardest to weaken it in similar ways as now: Quick Attacks and other slightly stronger slashing moves. It was hard, but I eventually captured him and now that same Magby was with me as a Magmortar.

    The sharp screech of my Gliscor snapped me out of my flashback and alerted me to the battle which I needed to complete. Luck. That's what it all boiled down to and I accepted it as a fact. A lucky status injury would benefit my cause greatly and for that reason, my next move was set.

    "Gliscor!" I called. "Charge the fighting frog Pokemon with a Thunder Fang and put more electricity than bite into it, if possible. Okay?"

    Paralysis was just the thing that would help me at the moment. More electricity would greatly aid the chance.

    Gliscor's fangs glowed with an intense yellow and crackled with an electric energy as he prepared to rush at the foe and bite down. I held my breath and hoped as he readied himself.

    "Gliscor, charge the fighting frog Pokemon with a Thunder Fang and put more electricity than bite into it, if possible, okay?" Kyle asked his Pokemon. Gliscor replied with a keen and he swooped towards the Croagunk, who was coolly standing his ground. Large faux-teeth made of electricity formed in around Gliscor's head, and they were brighter and less-distinct than usual Thunder Fang attacks. I guessed Gliscor was focusing more on the lighting aspect of the attack than the physical damage.

    As he got closer to the Croagunk, the lighting from the teeth began arcing outwards, striking the Croagunk before Gliscor even made contact. Gliscor opened his mouth wide, and the electrical jaws opened as well. Gliscor was all set to bring a world of pain to the Croagunk. The electricity was already zapping his foe, slowing him down.

    Gliscor moved closer, preparing to whisk past the land-locked Fighting type. But it didn't happen that way. Faster than the eye could see, the Croagunk launched a straight right jab at the Gliscor's face. It crushed into him, dispelling the electrical jaws. The Croagunk then followed up with a downward strike of its left hand, sending the Gliscor spiraling past and into the ground. The Croagunk calmly brushed off a few sparks that were crawling around on his skin, and he started running towards the dazed Gliscor.

    Gliscor charged the Croagunk, with lighting arcing in bright rays originating from my Pokemon's fangs, striking the Croagunk before he even made contact. Gliscor opened his mouth wide, and the electrical jaws opened as well in a marvelous display of obedience. Gliscor was all set to bring a world of pain to the Croagunk, and it looked like it would work, too. This pleased me. The wall of electricity already came in contact with the foe, zapping it with enough voltage to take down a human, and slowing the opponent down.

    Gliscor moved closer, preparing to whisk past the land-locked Fighting type. But it didn't happen that way. Faster than the eye could see, the Croagunk launched a straight right jab at the Gliscor's face. To my dismay, the swift punch worthy of a Hitmonchan crushed into my Pokemon's face and through the barricade of electricity, dispelling the jaws of yellow lightning. The Croagunk then followed up with a downward strike of its left hand, sending the Gliscor spiraling past and into the ground. The Croagunk calmly brushed off a few sparks that were crawling around on his skin, and he started running towards the dazed Gliscor.

    The events sent me into a state of panic; what could I do? There was nothing to prevent the toxic boxer from smashing into my Pokemon again. Gliscor was in a world of pain that had no relation to the outside world except for the influx of added pain. There was a chance that he would snap out of his state on his own, but the odds did not look good.

    I pondered more and more until Croagunk became alarmingly close to Gliscor. That was when I realized that I had to do something and do it fast. Then, a thought hit me faster than a Breloom's Mach Punch. I could use the opposing Pokemon's calm advance to my advantage. There would be no more scare tactics from me. Just outright attack. That should work.

    "Gliscor!" I called out, hoping he would be able to act in time. "Use Quick Attack on the Croagunk, snag it with your tail, flip it down into the ground and use your Ice Fang attack as you land on the other side of it."

    It was a difficult combo, but Gliscor would like its originality. A had confidence that he would launch the combo with utmost precision. If it worked exactly as planned, Gliscor would catch Croagunk off guard with a swift smack from a claw, and flip and trip the foe with his tail. As the Croagunk would be working to recover itself, a blast of ice would then follow. The ice would come from Gliscor's Ice Fang attack. Hopefully it would freeze the frog in its tracks.

    Gliscor still wasn't responding, but I had hope. A neat combo would surely work to my advantage. I stood back and held my breath.

    ~~~~~
    I was surprised that the Croagunk was able to put up such a good fight against the Gliscor. I'd seen Gliscor used in many professional battling teams, and the Croagunk was at a type disadvantage to boot.
    However, when Kyle called his next order, I knew the Croagunk was in trouble. Gliscor shook his head, and he saw the incoming frog barreling towards him. Like a flash of lighting, he darted towards his opponent, flying barely twenty centimetres above the ground. He shoved a claw at the Croagunk, who impressively managed to jink to the side and avoid the attack. But it couldn't avoid the tail that Gliscor shot out to the side. It tripped the frog up, but instead of moving on, the claw latched onto the frog's leg. This caused Gliscor to rotate at high speed.
    Even as all this was happening, some fog began gathering around Gliscor's mouth, as it prepared its Ice Fang attack. But unlike last time, there were no external jaws of doom. As he swung around, just before he made contact with the Croagunk, the ice attack blasted out of his mouth like a shotgun. The pure force of the attack sent him flying into the air, and it pushed the Croagunk into the ground. The Croagunk tried to get up, but it couldn't. It fell flat on its face.
    "Quick, it's flinching!" I shouted at Kyle. "Use this to your advantage!"
    I was beginning to worry that Gliscor would not recover in time, but he came through and launched a pro attack. The attack's success pleased me greatly as I could do something similar to it with ensured success.
    First, he lunged out with his claws and tail to trip up the weakened Poison Frog Pokemon. At the high speeds that Gliscor was traveling, this proved nearly impossible to dodge or block and the Croagunk tripped over Gliscor's tail, falling flat on his face.
    While the Croagunk was tripped up and stunned, my Gliscor used the opponent's leg like a pole and swung around gracefully. He then fired off a powerful ray of ice down at the Croagunk. The blast was extremely powerful; it sent its user flying up into the sky in a display of Newton's laws. The beam caught its target head-on and caused the small fighting frog to collapse onto the ground, stunned by the blow.
    "Good job, Gliscor!" I shouted out to my starter Pokemon. "One more hit should do it. Keep up the good work!"
    Now was the chance. If I could get a good-sized hit on the frog, then I would be able to catch it with little difficulty. However, I thought more, I could not afford to hit it hard enough that it would faint or run away. I examined the situation thoroughly to find the best outcome for all of the parties involved in this battle. The best for the Croagunk I would not let happen for it involved the Pokemon defeating my Gliscor and fleeing from me and my Ranger. The best for Gliscor would be for this battle to end without it taking anymore damage. For me, the coolest outcome would involve capturing the frog Pokemon. I decided to combine a few of those and make a finishing blow.
    "Gliscor! This is it!" I began to shout the order out to him. "Tuck your wings and dive bomb the frog with an Ice Fang attack!"
    Unlike the previous Ice Fang, this attack would be in the form that the Thunder Fang took, with fangs that glow an icy blue.
    I stood back and watched the scene, hoping that my plan would work. I held my breath yet again and waited for my Pokemon to execute the move.
    "Good job, Gliscor! One more hit should do it. Keep up the good work! Tuck your wings and dive bomb the frog with an Ice Fang attack!" Kyle yelled.
    Gliscor spread his wings wide, stalling in the air and halting his upwards movement. He then pulled them back in, falling into a backwards dive. He fell backwards, so his head was away from the Croagunk. As he fell, blue energy gathered around his head, and the energy took on the shape of a large pair of spiky jaws, just like the Thunder Fang from before had.
    Just befote Gliscor was about to hit the ground, he opened his wings again, which jerked him up. He was now flying quickly just above the ground, but upside down. The Croagunk turned its head, and saw Gliscor approaching quickly. It managed to get onto its knee, but it got no further. Rather than biting with the faux-fangs, as that would slow his speed, Gliscor dragged the sharp teeth along the Croagunk's body, using them like slashing daggers. Small wounds opened up all over the Croagunk's body. I could see that it was almost done.
    But not quite completely. Gliscor was also getting tired from pulling off complex maneuvers, and the Croagunk was gunna go down fighting. It got onto its knee, and spat a purple glob of poison at its retreating opponent. The glob hissed and let off purple steam as it flew through the air.
    Gliscor spread his wings wide, stalling in the air and halting his upwards movement as the wind resistance grew. He then pulled them back in, falling into a backwards dive. He fell backwards, so his head was away from the Croagunk. As he fell, cold blue energy gathered around his head, and it took on the shape of a large pair of spiky jaws, similar the Thunder Fang from before had.
    Just before Gliscor was about to hit the ground, he opened his wings again, which jerked him up. He was now flying quickly just above the ground, but upside down. The Croagunk turned its head and saw Gliscor approaching quickly. It managed to get onto its knee in an attempt to dodge the oncoming attack, but it got no further. Rather than biting with the faux-fangs, as that would slow his speed, Gliscor dragged the sharp teeth along the Croagunk's body, using them like several small daggers, slashing the frog's flesh. Small gashes opened up all over the Croagunk's body. My foe was weakened greatly.
    The Croagunk turned slowly, gasping because of the serious damage done. At least that was what I thought. It inhaled sharply and, instead of letting out air, spat a large blob of purple sludge at my Gliscor, who was still flying the opposite direction.
    I was impressed. This Pokemon was a true fighter; he wouldn't give up no matter what. He would make a great addition to my team. For now, though, I had to prevent my starter from taking any more unneeded damage.
    "Gliscor!" I called. "Get back!"
    I whipped out two Pokeballs and opened the first one. It was a blueish color, possibly a Moonball. Gliscor transformed into a flash of light and sped into my Pokeball, avoiding the incoming mass of unsanitary sludge. I opened the other, a standard Parkball and flung it at the Croagunk, my hope being that it was too injured and too absorbed in its final strike that it would become captured.
    I held my breath yet again, but this time it was more important; this time fate would be deciding whether or not I would capture this fighting/poison frog Pokemon.
    Thinking quickly, Kyle returned his Gliscor to its ball before the Sludge Bomb could hit. He then threw a Park Ball at the Croagunk. For his sake, I hope it captured. If the Croagunk escaped from the ball, and there was no Pokemon immediately ready to battle it, it would be allowed to walk away.
    The Park Ball shuddered on the ground. Finally, with a small clicking sound, the Pokemon inside was captured. A small red light light up on the pressure pad on the front of the ball.
    "Congratulations, you just caught a Croagunk," I said to Kyle. I walked over to the ball and picked it up - Ranger regulations stated that Rangers held onto the balls of captured Pokemon until their Trainers left the Park just in case something went wrong. I stowed the ball in my pack, which was resting comfortably in the small of my back.
    The Park Ball shuddered and wobbled on the ground for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, with a small clicking sound, the Pokemon inside was captured. The ball began to glow with a faint red light and I could almost imagine, for an unfathomable reason, a short ring of nostalgic, electronic music. This puzzled me as I had never heard the tune and it seemed to only sound inside my head. I wondered if I might be going insane, but this wouldn't be the first time I had thought such.
    "Congratulations," Chainy said to me, breaking my spell of thought. " you just caught a Croagunk."
    He then walked over to the Parkball lying on the ground, picked it up and stuffed into his pack. Confused, I briefly flipped through a small handbook for the rule which said that he could do so. After a little bit of searching through the wrong letter of the alphabet, I found the rule. It said something vague about Rangers holding on to the captured Pokemon to avoid unmentioned and equally vague circumstances which seemed to involve peril to something important.
    I shrugged the regulation off of my mind and pocketed the handbook. I looked up at my Ranger, expectantly.
    "Do we move on, now?" I asked. "To search for some more Pokemon, I mean."
