I had just returned from a trip to Mt Deckbi a previous day when another Mt Deckbi ran across my desk after no other rangers claimed it. I groaned at the location, Meteor Valley was the place I hated going most, but I longed to visit my favorite area, the Great Lakes. Whereas the lake region contained Water Pokemon, Mt. Deckbi contained Rock, Ground, and Fire types. I only possessed a few Pokemon that were those types, so I knew I would have to visit the place eventually, but for know I was concentrating on my favorite type, Water Pokemon.

Despite my longing duty did indeed call me to this job. I would do it no matter what. My goal was to be the best ranger possible, that meant providing my clients with a satisfying experience to ensure they would come back.

I hooked a couple of Water Pokemon to my belt and grabbed a Pokemon I rarely used, a Charizard. I had just got Charizard as a gift and I hadn’t the chance to use it in battle. I had only used it once when I had to go retrieve a trainer.

I made sure all my equipment was secure before I called out the giant orange dragon-like Pokemon known as Charizard. I gave him a pat and climbed onto back, careful to avoid his flame tipped tail. A second later we where in the area and speeding towards the volcano.

It was only a short trip and I reached the gates area after only twenty minutes. I had Charizard alight next to the gate and settled down to wait for the client. I pulled out his file to read while I waited.

"Well, still got some time to kill. May as well head out again," I said to myself. I had left the Power Plant after I had been unsuccessful in finding a Porygon, but the problem was that I still had some more time I needed to kill before I could get going on my next true run. I didn't know where to go though, so I just rolled a dice which included each area of the park, excluding the Plant since I was just there, and Meteor Valley since I was going there next. The dice this time told me to go to Mount Deckbi, and that was okay by me. I had a Litwick Voice Disk I wanted to try using anyway, but I also wanted to try looking for a Drillbur, and since I had a Skarmory Voice Disk I wasn't going to use, so I rewrote it into a Drillbur, and sent out my Gardevoir to accompany me along the way.

So, heading back to the park again I take it?

Yes. Gotta kill some more time, so I figured why not.

Who are you bringing along this time?

Just you and Chandelure. Don't forget that I don't intend to spend a very long time here, browsing around. I'm just killing time, and seeing if I can catch a useful Pokemon or two. Now, if you don't mind, would you mind teleporting use to about the area of the Ranger Outpost? I asked. With that I put my hand on Gardevoir's shoulder, and she took us to a few feet away from the area of the Ranger Outpost.

From here I pulled out my PokePlayer, and inserted my Drillbur Voice Disk, so that it would be playing when we got started. I didn't bother to bring along any type repellent, because I wasn't going to be too picky since I wasn't here for the long run. With that I went up to who I believed was my ranger. I'd seen him once before, because I remember he took me through Meteor Valley. Wasn't the prettiest run, but I managed to snag a Gastly from it. "Hello, you must be my ranger. Do you remember me?" I asked, as I looked at his Charizard, and waited.

It wasn’t a long wait because Eric appeared a short amount of time later. He just popped out of nowhere, a Gardevoir by his side. That meant he had probably teleported here.

“Hello, you must be my ranger. Do you remember me?” He glanced at my Charizard with the eye of an experienced trainer, which he certainty was, I heard good things about him from older trainer that I knew.

“Yes, I took you on that run where you caught a Gastly.” I grimaced at the memory. “That was actually a pretty bad run, Gastly was the highlight of it though.” I brightened. “However, I have a good feeling about this run. Let’s get on with it.”

With the introductions made and I plugged my ID into the front gate and entered the volcanic area. Because of the heat this was a very arid climate, you needed to drink a ton of water and carry a mask when at higher elevations.

Because of the nature of the Pokemon here I decided to keep my Charizard out. He would enjoy the heat anyway. I had just started us down the path to the volcano when I spotted a Pokemon with a head of a hammer head shark. Its telltale blue scales gave it away as a Garchomp.

    “Garchomp has appeared.”

“Yes, I took you on that run where you caught a Gastly. That was actually a pretty bad run, Gastly was the highlight of it though. However, I have a good feeling about this run. Let’s get on with it.” It wasn't really that bad, it was just a lot of duplicate Pokemon. As long as I leave a run with one thing though I'm happy enough so.

We got into Mount Deckbi, and we instantly spotted a Pokemon. It seemed as though my Voice Disk had failed. This wasn't a Drillbur, but rather a Pokemon that looked like a hammer head shark. Not to mention it was a pseudo. It was kind of cool, and I did enjoy using them, but I always ended up trading them.

    “Garchomp has appeared,” Gaius said.

"Yes it has. Good way to start a run. Picture money," I said as I pulled out my camera to take a picture. At the same time, and out of curiosity, I also pulled out my Litwick Voice Disk, and swapped it for my Drillbur one and hit play. Once I did that I snapped Garchomp's picture, and waited to move on.

“Yes it has. Good way to start a run, picture money,” Eric commented idly, taking out a camera and snapping a picture with the digital camera.

“Always a good thing,” I chuckled. “Be sure to hand that to me at the end if you want to trade it for some cash.” People could take pictures of rare mon and trade them in for cash, it was a way for us to showcase those in our park acting naturally.

The picture startled the Garchomp and it fled from us. Camera tended to scare the Pokemon and causing them to run. With the Garchomp gone I decided we could continue along. We walked along for another two minutes before I spotted some flying dirt off the path. I motioned for Eric to follow me as I went to investigate it. It turned out to be a Trapinch burrowing under a rock, no doubt searching for food.

    “Want the little guy?”

The camera scared off the Garchomp. Imagine a tough thing like that being scared off by a flash of light. Made me laugh a little. We started to walk along again, while I attempted to look for a Litwick. I already had a Chandelure, but I wanted a Litwick to keep around as a pet. We only walked for a couple of minutes before Gaius spotted a clump of some dirt, and went to look. What had been there was a Pokemon, though unfortunately it wasn't something I wanted.

“Want the little guy?” Gaius asked, motioning at the Trapinch.

What is this gonna be, the run of the Dragons? I thought to myself. "No thanks. Flygon might not be too bad, but I have enough Dragon-types for the time being. Let's just try to move on, and if we can't I brought along many Pokedolls," I said as I reached into my bag to grab on just in case. While I was at it I also flipped my Litwick Voice Disk out, and put the Drillbur one back in its place, and hit play.

“No thanks,” Eric responded promptly. “Flygon might not be too bad, but I have enough Dragon types for the time being. Let’s just try to move on, and if we can’t I brought along many Pokedolls.”

“That’s always a good thing, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Pokemon seldomly want to stick around when I’m in the area.”

Sure enough we proceeded past the Trapinch without it trying to come after us. In only a short amount of time the Ground and Dragon Pokemon was left behind us. After a few minutes we came to a fork in the road.

“We can head right or left. The left route has an underground cave we can explore while the right will eventually lead us to the volcano flanks.”

Before he could answer my question a Sandshrew came out of a hole in the ground. It rubbed its small black eyes and looked up at us in interest.

“That’s always a good thing, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Pokemon seldomly want to stick around when I’m in the area,” Gaius said in response to me saying I had a lot of Pokedolls. That's wonderful. Maybe I can find something decent that I'd actually want to stick around though, I thought to myself. Sure I was killing time here, but I wasn't just here to see the scenery. I wanted to battle something.

“We can head right or left. The left route has an underground cave we can explore while the right will eventually lead us to the volcano flanks,” Gaius informed me. Before I even had a chance to answer though, a Pokemon came out of a hole in the ground. I got my hopes up that it was a Drillbur since they would do that, but unfortunately it was just a crummy Sandshrew.

"Don't even bother asking. I'll pass on this, and have my Pokedoll ready if needed," I said, as I once again hit play on my Drillbur disk. Since neither was instantly working, I figured I'd play one for as long as I could, then swap back to the other.

“Don’t even bother asking,” Eric replied, plugging a Drillbur voice disc into his player. “I’ll pass on this, and I have my Pokedoll ready if needed.”

“Sure, let’s go along the right side then.”

I started off that path with Eric trailing me. But after traveling about thirty feet I realized the little Sandshrew had taken a liking to the Eric. “Well, you’ll have to give me a Pokedoll because this guy has taken a shine to you.”

Eric scowled but handed over the plush Clefairy doll without another word. I shook the toy at the little Sandshrew and tossed it back behind us, a little off the path so if got tired of the toy it wouldn’t know where we were.

With the Ground type successfully distracted we were free to continue on. This time it took us about fifteen minutes to run into our next encounter. This time it was the Steel type known a Lairon, a pre-evolved form that would evolve into Aggron. Lairon was a Pokemon that was about the size of a small pony, but with large stubby legs and a thick coat of steel covering the top sections of its body. The Pokemon glared at us with its blue eyes and gave a shake of its armored head, the Pokemon was spoiling for a fight with something. I gave Eric a questioning glance.

“Sure, let’s go along the right side then,” Gaius said, but before we could even move on, Sandshrew decided it would be an annoyance, and get in our way, trying to prevent us from moving on. “Well, you’ll have to give me a Pokedoll because this guy has taken a shine to you.” I handed over one of my dolls, and waited to continue along.

We started to walk along again, and this time around it was a little while before we ran into something. Roughly about fifteen or so minutes based on my phone. What we ran into this time was a dual Rock, Steel-type Pokemon. Yet again it was just another disappointment, and not something I wanted in the least bit.

I noticed Gaius looking at me, like he was asking if I wanted this thing. "No thanks. Aggron doesn't interest me too much. Slow, and four times weakness to two common types isn't that fun. So I have no want for this Lairon. Let's just try to move on, but if we can't I'll use another one of my Pokedolls. Also, I'll continue to play my Drillbur Voice Disk, and hope for the best," I said as I readied another Pokedoll, and hit play again.

I nodded my assent to his command and faced the wild Lairon. The Pokemon snorted and pawed at the ground. I thought it was going to charge us, but it simply stepped from the path to let us pass. I either wanted a specific Pokemon or it just didn’t want to battle a couple of humans.

I gave the Pokemon a nod in thanks and continued past the Steel and Rock type, but stopped when I saw a yellow Apricorn laying on the ground. I retrieved it and passed it to Eric. We continued on and the Lairon was just out of sight when I heard an answering call to the Disk. Suddenly a Drillbur popped out of the ground and looked at us curiously.

    “There is your Drillbur.”

IC: Lairon snorted at us, and pawed at the ground. It appeared as though it was going to charge at us, in which case I was ready for it. At the last moment though, it decided to step away from the path, and allow us to pass on. I didn't know what's its deal was with acting like it wanted a fight, but then unexpectingly backing down, but I didn't care. All this meant was that I could now advance on without needed to spend another Pokedoll. That was good because while they were cheap, I too was cheap and didn't want to have to buy more for my next run. We couldn't leave just yet though, because there was something sitting where Lairon had been. It was an apricorn, a yellow one to be exact. Something that I had a few of already. Still though a free apricorn was a free apricorn, and at some future time I could put it towards a ball being made. Though probably not anytime soon, because I already had one made that could be used at the Power Plant, I was already in Mount Deckbi, and I only just recently left Mount Oktori. Those were the three places where balls that involved a yellow apricorn were for so. Maybe I could just give it to a squirrel.

Our business here was done, so we continued along again, with me still playing my voice disk, hoping for the best. We were walking along, and just as we got out of sight of seeing Lairon, something seemed to respond to my voice disk. It was a little mole Pokemon, that came up from the ground. Its body was mainly black in color, but it did have blueish streaks running across its body. It had a white snot, a pink nose, and white claws. It was the Pokemon I had currently been trying to look for. It was great that I found it, but this wasn't really the ideal spot for a battle. I liked to have a lot of room to work with, so that my Pokemon could fire attacks off better. At least this wasn't inside a cave though where you needed to be extra cautious so that you didn't cause damage to the environment.

“There is your Drillbur,” Gaius said. This was great, because not only did I finally encounter a Pokemon I had really been wanting for quite some time, but also because my Voice Disk actually worked, and that was very rare to see happen. I wanted to take full advantage of this situation, and capture this Drilbur. Of course the only thing I needed to sort out was which Pokemon I'd use here. I was pretty much certain that I knew which one I'd be using, but before I made my official choice I was cut off.

I've got this one, Gardevoir said to me, before I sent her into battle.

Well obviously. I don't doubt Chandelure's power, especially with its nice, diverse movepool, but in terms of battling a Ground-type it'd be much better to use you.

"All right, this is your fight Gardevoir. Get started with a Calm Mind, and then follow up with a Magical Leaf!" I commanded. I didn't want to take any chances in this fight, but to tell you the truth I had never actually battled a Drilbur before, so I had no idea what they were capable of. I had faced Excadrill's before though, and I knew they could be a challenge, but also frail. With that in mind I needed to be careful here, and show some restraint so I didn't go too far. At the same time though I was in a bit of a hurry, and Drilbur was the only thing I intended to battle, so I also didn't want to hold back too much, and waste a ton of time. Oh I hated conflicting options like these.

Gardevoir got into position, and got ready. First up was going to be Calm Mind. The user would go into a state of focus, and clear their mind, which would in turn build up their strength. This boosted their Special Attack, and Special Defense by one stage each. This would make Gardevoir stronger, so it could deal more damage from the attack it used, and it would also be able to withstand some more hits in most cases, though Drilbur wasn't know for its Special Attacks so that one wasn't likely to come to fruition, but I'd also need to be careful with my move choices at the same time, which is why I went for Magical Leaf, rather than the more powerful Energy Ball as my choice for a damage dealing move.

Magical Leaf was a Grass-type attack, but it was certainly infused with Psychic energy, hence the "magical" part from its name. This was because this attack wasn't like your ordinary attack. Leaves would be created from a Pokemon's energy, much like a Razor Leaf, but they would also be fused with their energy. This would hone in on the opposing Pokemon's energy signature, and track them down. This seemed useful to me, because in a place like Mount Decbki, a smaller Pokemon such as a Drilbur could easily burrow its way underground, and hide behind a sturdy rock or something. I didn't particularly care for that, because I wasn't someone who enjoyed defensive tactics in a battle. I preferred to go all out, and attack powerfully. After all the best defense was a good offense, and ninety-five percent of my Pokemon fit that bill nicely. Gardevoir was no exception, and I looked forward to seeing its power put on display during this battle.

This here though, much like with all the beginning moves I did in a battle in the park, was to test Drilbur. I wanted to see how it would react to what Gardevoir was doing, and what it planned to do itself. I didn't know if it was going to try to constantly be attacking, or if it was going to be playing defensively, and waiting out Gardevoir, hoping to see a mistake or something. Once I knew how things were going to look though I could formulate some sort of plan, and work towards a capture.

Eric was clearly excited by the sight of the Drilbur, a Pokemon that was rare and in high demand amount elite trainers. I was looking to add one to my roster also, but for now I had to watch this battle take place.

“All right, this is your fight, Gardevoir,” Eric commanded, summoning his powerful Gardevoir to the field. “Get started with a Calm Mind, and then follow up with a Magical Leaf!”

The Gardevoir indicated to its trainer that it understood and it started to focus on its inner self. Bringing all focus to the battle at hand, banishing any stray thoughts. Calm Mind brought peace to the user and allowed them to concentrate, a powerful move, especially in the hands of Psychic Pokemon.

Drilbur saw the Gardevoir using the command and pouted when Gardevoir didn’t pay it any attention. But it brightened a moment later when it thought of something. As the Gardevoir focused on calming itself for the battle, Drilbur started to bring its large claws together in what seemed like a motion of sharpening them. I recognized it as the move known as Hone Claws, something that raised both attack and accuracy.

Gardevoir finished first and started on the Magical Leaf attack, one that used vegetation as a weapon. Mt. Deckbi was a spot without much vegetation to speak of, the ash and flames managed to choke out as much life as possible. So the Gardevoir would be hard pressed to find any in abundance. But it managed to somehow rally some around it. When it has built up a small flurry of the floating leaves and grass it fired the ensemble at Drilbur. The small black mole saw the attack coming and dived under a rock, thinking it could escape. But the attack simply followed at struck the smaller Pokemon on the behind.

It yelped and jumped up onto a rock to get a good advantage. It’s small eyes alighted on the Gardevoir and it jumped forward, ones of its silver claws trailing a dark shadow behind it. I recognized the attack as Shadow Claw, one that would hurt the Gardevoir more so than other attacks. Drilbur struck fast, raking its claws across the body of the Psychic before leaping back to safety.

Gardevoir got itself into position, and started to concentrate. It went into a deep focus, clearing its mind of any unneeded thoughts, and making sure that its focus would only go towards Drilbur. Drilbur, however, seemed to be annoyed, and was pouting some about it. Not because Gardevoir was using Calm Mind though, but because it was paying no attention whatsoever to it. Seemed a little weird that it would want the foe who was going to be attacking it to focus on it, but hey this couldn't be helped. I wanted Gardevoir to set up a little bit, so that it could be more handy in the long run here. I think after seeing that she wasn't going to pay attention to it though, Drilbur got a similar idea in mind. It too got into a stance, and started to work on boosting some stats for itself. It stood there, and started to sharpen its claws. It was using Hone Claws, a move that would sharpen the users claws, boosting both their Attack, and Accuracy in the process. This was certainly shaping up to be quickly interesting, and it was before both Pokemon even threw an attack out there, so it was certainly something getting the old blood pumping. That was good, because excitement was something that I felt my battles had been lacking for a few months now. Even my trip to Mount Oktori didn't seem to get me back into the swing of things, and I wanted the feeling of excitement to be back before my team run.

Gardevoir unleashed the Magical Leaf, but Drilbur thought nothing of this at all. So much so that it didn't even seem to know what attack this was, and it just tried to avoid the attack. It dove under a rock, but that was pointless. Unless it dove under a sturdy shield that was covering it on all sides there was no avoiding Magical Leaf. This was no different, the attack followed Drilbur, and struck it right on the rump. It yelped at this, causing Gardevoir to chuckle a little. Not that it was pleased causing pain to the little guy, it was just that the way it happened was a little humorous to her. Drilbur then jumped onto a rock, and set its gaze directly onto Gardevoir. He then took one of his claws, and stuck it forward. It then turned from its normal silver color, into a shade of dark purple. The attack was Shadow Claw, a Ghost-type move that would slash at the foe using sharp claws. It jumped and quickly raked his claws against Gardevoir's body, before jumping back to safety. It seemed to be doing the old "hit and run" battle strategy. That wasn't for me, since it relied on defense just as much as offense. I preferred using as much offense as possible. Of course that didn't mean I never used defense tactics though, because I remember a long time ago when I faced a Rotom in the park I played things cautiously there. I had my Scizor use moves such as Substitute, and Double Team, while Toxic slowly sapped away Rotom's health.

"So you wanna use a Ghost-type move, huh Drilbur? Well I'll show you how it's done. Use Shadow Ball Gardevoir!" I commanded.

Should you really have said "I'll show you how it's done" when I'm the one who is actually doing it? Gardevoir said. She always felt the need to add her two cents.

I'm fairly certain Drilbur understood my point. I think it knows that I can't actually do an attack like that. If I thought that it thought I could, don't you think I'd be trying to distract it so you get a good shot in? Now no more backsass outta you.

Hmm, good point, you would probably distract it if you could. All right I'll attack now.

Now that that little bit was done with, we could get back to the action. Gardevoir put her two hands together, with only about a three inch gap between them, and started to slowly form a ball of purple energy. Shadow Ball was a Ghost-type move, that was dark purple in color, with a lighter shade of purple on the inside. The ghostly energy that was mixed in with the attack gave it a chance at lowering the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense. I wasn't after that though. Calm Mind was the only edge that I needed here. I just wanted to throw an attack Drilbur's way to try and damage it some more, and Shadow Ball was the first thing that came to my mind since it had used a Ghost-type move before me. Sure this wasn't the most powerful move I could have done, and I did want to do a status move at some point, but to be fair I didn't want to do the status move until I at least knew it was about time to try to capture it, since they suck away health in most cases. Thunder Wave would fail since its a Ground-type, and I wasn't too reliant on Hypnosis due to the poor chance it had to hit.

The battle wasn't too far in, and yet I somehow already felt that it was getting close to being over with. Gardevoir had a decent amount of moves it could throw out there, but some of them were pretty powerful, and I couldn't forget that I needed to be careful. If I accidentally knocked this thing out I'd probably kick myself so hard that I would fall off the mountain. Now that wasn't to say I was concerned right now, but as time went on I'd need to be extra careful with move choices. After this round of battle I'd come up with some sort of plan. I usually did battle recklessly, and just threw caution to the wind, winging everything but when I only intended to battle one thing, well I didn't particualarly want to leave anything unnecessary to chance.

Gardevoir and Eric started to communicate telepathically once more as they thought out a strategy to fighting this powerful Ground type. Drilbur was a strong Pokemon so they would need to use strong moves to bring its health low, but he couldn’t afford to cause it to faint as the park rules stated that a Pokemon couldn’t be caught if it was fainted.

The Magical Leaf was one move that was strong enough to do a large amount of damage, but it was a move he could probably only do it once otherwise he risked the chance of knocking it out. This was why I thought he had settled upon a move that would do less damage.

The move turned out to be a Shadow Ball move, a Ghost type move. Gardevoir brought its hand together and began to form an orb of purple and black energy. Purple lightening pulsed through the orb as it grew in size. Gardevoir finished when the attack was about the size of a medium watermelon.

The Gardevoir located the Drilbur and fired the ball at the Ground Pokemon. The black mole Pokemon saw it coming but was just a tad to slow when it tried to dodge, the attack just clipping its legs. The Pokemon was knocked to the ground and came up scowling at Gardevoir.

The Pokemon shook the dust from its fur and smiled at Gardevoir. There was shimmer around the Drilbur and the Pokemon split into copies of itself. In less than two seconds the Drilbur was replaced by four perfect copies. Now all the Pokemon smiled wickedly at Gardevoir and stalked forward slowly.
