I was in the ranger office, feet propped against my desk as I watched a televised Pokemon battle on the TV. My office was sparse, but very neat. Nothing was out of place nor messy. I did a fist pump as my guy knocked out one of the opponents, that meant both were on their last Pokemon. A knocked sounded on my door. "Come in," I called to the person outside.

The secretary poked her head inside the door. "Hey, Gaius, you have a trainer waiting for you in Meteor Valley."

I groaned aloud. I would miss the gym battle now, but I need a paycheck so it's off to work. "Alright, upload his file to my Ipad please."

"Already done, have fun." She smiled and shut the door.

I rose from my chair and walked over to the wall on the right. I grabbed my Pokemon, ranger jacket and cap. I knew Meteor Valley contained a variety of Pokemon, but the most common being Dark and Psychic types. I looked at my trainer's stuff which was in my email. He was going in with a Castoform and Metagross. I lifted an eyebrow at Castform, it would be interesting to see how he used that in battle.

I pulled out a Pokeball and summoned my Alakazam. "Hey, Teleport us to the gate of Meteor Valley please," I told one of my oldest Pokemon.

"Done." I felt a quick sensation as we appeared at the gates of Meteor Valley.

    NBP - Meteor Valley Gates

I sat on the rocks by the roadside leading in to Meteor Valley, awaiting the arrival of his assigned Ranger and reflecting on the events of the last few months. The invasion of Antaireen to bring down Emperor Tar'shen's tyrannical reign had been a difficult operation, particularly as I had been at the forefront of the fighting in my role as Pokemon Warfare Specialist. Like a lot of his ilk Tar'shen had no compunctions about sending Pokemon into battle with even less regard for their safety than his human followers, but unlike many military forces the Antaireenan army had gone to great lengths to intergrate their human and Pokemon soldiers, taking full advantage of all the powers that were on offer. The actual combat had wound down weeks ago with the successful capture of the Emperor and elimination of the last few hold-outs and those Psychic-types being used to maintain a telepathic hold over the general population, but the clean-up operation would still be ongoing for many months. It was a sad state of affairs that most of the militarised Pokemon would have to be put down, having been taken a long way beyond rehabilitation.

At that thought, I felt the unfamiliar weight of the light blue Peacekeeper-issue Pokeball at my waist, the latest addition to my little family. Caliban was the first Pokemon I'd captured during active combat, usually prefering to get to know them during the clean-up stages or acquire them outside of my day job, and I could already feel a great burden of responsibility for his recovery. The poor Castform had been raised since birth (if the captured intel was to be believed) and trained as a weapon for the Antaireenan army; I captured him in the skies after he'd splashed a couple of F-16s and kept him with me after leaving the warzone. Regulations recquire all captured combatants (Pokemon included) to be handed over to Peacekeeping Enforcers, but something about this young warrior made me keep hold of him.

I'd spent my time since then on a leave of absence to clear my head, and to attempt to begin Caiban's road to recovery. He had been angry and rebellious at first, but soon settled into a cold, distant temperament; I suspected that he recognised my authority and had difficulty disobeying me from years of mental programming. My other Pokemon all worked with me to try and bring him out of his shell, show him that there was more to life than emotionlessly killing people on the orders of your superiors, but Caliban refused to be drawn into a more normal life. I hoped that this trip to the National Park, along with my oldest companion, would him to form a bond between the two of us, but I suspected it would be another failed endeavour.

A sudden flash of light to my side snapped me out of my reverie, my soldier's instincts quickly assuming control. 'Teleportation flash, probable enemy combatants, eliminate,' the thoughts ran through my head in an instant and I had almost drawn my concealed pistol before I got a hold of myself, recognising the distinctive uniform of the National Park Rangers. I lifted myself up from the rock I'd been perched on and approached the new arrival, "Morning Ranger, I'm Roph Dounias."

Less than a second had passed and I was no longer at the Ranger office, but at the rough terrain of Meteor Valley. A quick movement at the corner of my eye caused me to turn and face the man who I suspected to be my Trainer. I pulled out my iPad and looked up his Trainer information. All Trainers had to provide data before they were allowed in the park and that information was catagorized for the protective Rangers to use.

Yep, this was him. About average height, and a frame that wasn’t unlike my own. He wore a pair of glasses that gave him an intelligent look, but that was almost offset by his military style haircut and bearing. His choice of mute earthly greens and browns attested to that fact.

His rose from the rock he had been sitting on and came over to me. “"Morning Ranger, I'm Roph Dounias."

“Gaius Tyrannius,” I said, shaking his hand. Definently military. “I see this is your first run, so I hope we come across some good Pokemon.” I tilted my head to my Alakazam, who was standing quitely behind me. “You sense any danger from him?” I mentally thought out. If he was military that could always mean poacher, and I had to be careful.

“All clear,” came back the mental reply.

I pointed at the rocky path before us. “We’ll start with this path first. It takes us through some woods and leads to a cave up ahead.”

I led the way forward up the path that climbed one of the valley slopes. We hadn’t been traveling far when we reached a path of tall tall trees. “Watch out,” I heard a mental warning from Alakazam.

I looked up and saw a coffin shaped Pokemon descend from a tree. Four large black ghost hands waved around its body. It was the Ghost Pokemon Cofagrigus.

“Want to catch this guy?” I asked my Trainer.

    BP1 - Meteor Valley

The Pokemon before me was one I'd never seen before, but a quick analysis told me all I needed to know about it; solidly defensive, Ghost type (possibly dualled with Rock, but unlikely), ambush predator. It wasn't something I was particularly interested in taking home, but the battle experience could probably be beneficial, especially with the way that Ghost-types were creeping in to military forces these days.

"I don't think I'll be trying for this guy, but he'll do for a little warm-up before I let him get on with his day," I said, pulling Caliban's PokeBall from my belt and slinging it forwards.

The ball opened with a burst of light that quickly coalesced into a Castform who immediately turned to glare at me, barely repressed rage seething beneath his calm exterior. A stab of pity pierced my heart as I saw the inner turmoil he was clearly going through.

"Give him a taste of your Hidden Power Caliban, but go easy on him."

Caliban snorted derisively at the last proviso, but I was fairly confidant he would comply. He turned back to face the Cofagrigus as a stream of small red orbs begun to flow from the two small stubs on the front of his body. The energy balls briefly orbitted Caliban before launching towards the wild Pokemon, arcing slightly outwards so as to catch him with only glancing blows.

“I don’t think I’ll be trying for this guy,” said Roph after a moment of thought. “But he’ll do for a little warm-up before I let him get on with his day.” He pulled the standard white and red Pokeball from his belt and flung it forwards. A burst of crimson light filled tilled the area for the briefest of seconds before a small gray cloud-like Pokemon formed from the energy. The Normal Pokemon turned and seemed to stare at his trainer with barely disguised anger.

This interested me greatly, soldiers usually kept their Pokmon in line and often formed close bonds with them because of their line of work. I would have to explore this with Roph later on.

“Give him a taste of your Hidden Power, Caliban, but go easy on him,” command Roph.

The Castform made a sound that sounded like a snort before turing to face the Cofagrigus floating before it. From the Pokemon’s stubs on its underside shot forth multiple orbs of red Fire energy that swirled around the body of the Normal Pokemon before launching at Cofagrigus in an arcing manner.

The Cofagrigus wasn’t going to go down without a fight however. Since it was a Ghost type Pokemon, not many of its moves could affect the Normal Castform. As Castform gathered the energy for the Hidden Power move, Cofagrigus was preparing a move of its own. Its frantic arms had been waving around widely before, but the Pokemon’s body seemed to take on a more relaxed stance as the arms slowly lowered to its side.

I instinctively knew the Pokemon was using the Calm Mind move but by doing so it had placed itself in harms way of the Hidden Power. The ball of red struck Cofagrigus in its coffin shaped body but puffed out immediately after contacting, causing small sparks to fly about.

“I think it used a Calm Mind,” I said to my trainer while stepping aside and away from the battle. “Tread carefully.”

Caliban executed the attack pretty much perfectly, but the effect was decidedly lacklustre. I wondered if something had gone wrong with his attack, perhaps he’d been a little too gentle, when my Ranger spoke up.

    > “I think it used a Calm Mind,” I said to my trainer while stepping aside and away from the battle. “Tread carefully.”

“Ah, that makes sense of the situation,” I replied, silently chastising myself for not picking up on it; in my experience Ghost-types were more about psychological warfare so I had expected any attacks to have a showy, theatrical flair. Unfortunately, through luck or intuition, the wild Pokemon had chosen precisely the right defensive manoeuvre to derail my assault. Caliban’s only Physical moves were Normal-type and would harmlessly phase through Cafagrigus, and any Special attacks would likely bounce off its enhanced defences.

I quickly assessed the battlefield, looking for any advantage I could pull from the terrain. “Launch a Thunderbolt into the tree behind him,” I called out, confidant that a lightning strike would blast a shower of shrapnel-like bark into the area immediately surrounding it, hopefully at least enough to put a dent in Cofagrigus.
Small charges of electricity surged up through Caliban’s body, merging together at the hair-like wisp on his head before arcing out towards his target.

“Ah, that makes sense of the situation,” Roph said, as if the gears in his head were moving frantically about. The soldier looked around the battlefield as if he was formulating a plan to take down the Cofagrigus quickly. “Launch a Thunderbolt into the tree behind him,” he ordered Castform at last.

I raised an eyebrow at this last command. I would have thought he would have wanted the Thunderbolt to actually strike the Ghost Pokemon. I wondered if his plan, whatever it was, would work out soundly.

Around the gray body of Castform I could start to see small sparks of Electricity build up as the energy gathered at the small tip on its head. It took a few seconds but eventually the tip had started to take on a yellow glow, signaling the attack was ready. With a small cry the Pokemon fired a bolt of pure Electric energy at the tall tree behind Cofagrigus.

As the bolt of electricity arched over Cofagrigus, I could clear see the surprise etched on the Pokemon’s face, but it seem to take the attack in stride as a mistake by the trainer. It brought two of its ghost arms together in front of his body. A small green yellow orb began to form between the Pokemon’s fingers. Within a second or two the orb had built up until it was roughly the size of a human head. The Pokemon lifted its arms as if it was to fire, btu just as it did so the Thunderbolt hit the tree. The tree exploded, sending shards of wood flying in the form of deadly missiles. The blow pushed against Cofagrigus just before it fired, causing the Energy Ball it was firing to go astray and just barely clip the body of Castform.

I could feel the anger rolling off the Ghost Pokemon now. With a sneer at Castform the Pokemon brought his hands together and another orb of energy began to form, this one a ball of purple fire.

“Careful,” I said to the soldier. “You risk starting a fire when you use attacks in that manner.”

Of course the Ranger was right, I wasn't used to the idea of reigning in my attacks to prevent environmental damage; I was usually more concerned with the immediate danger than the clean-up operation. Not only that, but I needed to bring this battle to a close quickly before Caliban took too many more hits. The Cofagrigus was empowered by its Calm Mind and Caliban's entire system was still somewhat weakened by withdrawal from whatever coctail of drugs his former masters had used to amp up his abilities; he wouldn't be able to take too many more hits.

"OK Caliban, use Ice Beam to counter his attack and follow up with a Hydro Pump," I ordered. If everything went to plan then Cofagrigus' fiery attack would be dissipated by the Ice Beam, and any lingering water vapour from the blast would be picked up by the Hydro Pump on its way through.

Roph immediately understood my reasoning and gave me a nod of confirmation. I returned his nod and switched my attention back to the battle at hand.

The Castform seemed to have its hands full with the Pokemon it was battling as neither held the clear advantage over the other. But with the boost from Calm Mind, Cofagrigus’s stats were higher so it would be benefical to Castform’s health if the battle was resolved quickly. But first that dangerous WoW had to be dealt with.

“Okay, Caliban, use Icebeam to counter his attack and follow up with a Hydro Pump,” ordered Roph.

The Castform seemed to inhale air and its normally gray body took on a light blue hue to it. A moment later a beam of cyan colored energy shot from its mouth and collided with the purple fire of Will-O-Wisp. The ice completely enveloped the Fire attack and snuffed out its flames instantly. The orb fell to ground and shattered in shards of ice.

I could tell Cofagrigus was surprised by this but it didn’t have time to think because a moment later a large column of water smashed into its body, forcing the Pokemon against the tree. The Coffin Pokemon sputtered briefly before it focused on Castform and instead of just one Cofagrigus, Castform now faced three of them, one being wiped out by the Hydro Pump. The three stood in a rough circle around the lone Normal type.

“Smart, it used the Double Team to escape some of the Hydro Pump damage,” I muttered to myself.

((OOC: Will do in future, it was kinda a rushed post last night.))

    BP4 - Meteor Valley

This battle was definitely going nowhere fast, it would be best just to cut and run. I had no intentions of attempting to catch the Pokemon and had learnt some good lessons for future battles with Ghost types, so there was little point in risking further harm to Caliban. "Tactical withdrawal Caliban, use Flash to cover our retreat."

Caliban turned to face me in surprise, his expression a mix of shock and shame; having been conditioned as a defensive weapon the concept of retreat was still new to him.

"That's an order Caliban, you've done well but we can't get bogged down here." I tried to mollify his feelings of failure, but I could tell that it still hurt him to even consider leaving before either he or his opponent was dead.

He flung an angry look at me before, reluctantly, obeying my instructions. Caliban turned back to face Cofagrigus and begun gnerating electricity as if he were going to fire another Thunderbolt. This time however the charge continued to arc across his body as it built up until he was glowing a harsh yellow colour.

"Shield your eyes," I yelled to the ranger, simultaneously activating the polarisation filter on my glasses, blacking out the lenses to block the imminent flash of light.

“Tactical withdrawal, Caliban, use Flash to cover our retreat.” This command from Roph clearly startled his Pokemon as indicated because it turned to face him, a look of horror on its face. “That’s and order, Caliban. You’ve done well but we can’t get bogged down here,” Roph said in a firm tone. The Castform fixed his trainer with a stern glare but turned to obey his command.

I nodded my head, Castform was decidedly unhappy with the command, but would do as the trainer wanted. That suggested some trust and respect for the trainer. The body of Castform started to glow an yellow, but this time instead of the power being localized to one part of the Pokemon’s body the whole of took on a bright yellow color.

“Shield your eyes,” Roph called to me, while hitting some sort of switch on his glasses.

I turned to Alakazam and sent a thought away. A moment later my vision darkened until I could see nothing. The blackness faded away a second later and I grabbed the arm of Roph and fled down the path we had been climbing.

We thundered down the rocky path but when I glanced over my shoulder and saw Cofagrigus still chasing us, hovering some twelve feet in the air. “Uh, I don’t think we’re going to run from it. Either throw it a doll or prepare to battle.”

I cursed our my luck as the Cofagrigus continued doggedly pursuing us, I guess there was no choice now but to use the decoy. I reached into my bag as we continued to run, pulling out a small yellow, mouse-like doll - designed to appear like the incredibly popular Pikachu - and quickly read through the instructions.

'Fold doll in half until a popping sound is heard, then shake and throw. Within 3 seconds of pop the doll will begin exuding pheremones designed to produce an agression response in 97% of all currently discovered Pokemon.' So, crack it like a glow rod, sling it and hope that Cofagrigus would respond, and that Caliban wouldn't catch the scent.

'Here goes nothing,' I thought as I cracked and shook the Pikachu doll, turning mid-stride to throw the doll in Cofagrigus' general direction before turning back to the path we'd taken.

The trainer muttered a few curses words under his breath and pulled out a Pokedoll out of his carrying pack. He quickly assembled the Pikachu doll and turned to throw the doll at Cofagrigus. I turned to look at the Ghost type and saw it dive after the plush toy.

I turned my head and signaled for Roph to slow down some, the Pokemon wouldn’t bother us any longer. “It’s gone,” I panted. “We can explore that path later if you want, but for now let’s just take the main path through the center of the valley.”

With that I set off through the knee high grass that covered most of the valley floor. Usually rangers wore Khaki shorts for their excursions, but because this was Meteor Valley and I didn’t feel like scraping my knees on rocks or scratching at them because of the grass, I had chosen to wear long green cargo pants instead.

We hadn’t gone far in the grass when I spotted some rustling to the right. I lifted a hand to Roph and waited to see what came out. A moment later out stepped a small blue creature with a huge smile. “Wynaut!” the Pokemon cried happily when it saw us.

“How do you feel about this guy?” I asked, ruffling the long ears of Wynaut, who beamed a smile at me.

I breathed a sigh of relief as we left Cofagrigus behind, glad to be out of the battle. As I followed the Ranger further in to Meteor Valley, I turned to look at my despondent Castform; he still didn’t like the idea of having fled.

“Caliban,” I said in an attempt to buck up his spirits, “there’s no shame in running from a losing battle; it’s important to recognise your limits and know when to cut and run.” I reached out a hand to give him a reassuring pat on the head, but he flinched away from my touch in fear before snarling at me, clearly angry with himself for having shown any weakness. “I don’t know what more I have to do to convince you that I’m not going to hurt you Caliban, but I’m not going to stop trying,” I declared, more to reassure myself about not giving up than for his benefit, before I returned him to his Pokéball.

    > “How do you feel about this guy?” I asked, ruffling the long ears of Wynaut, who beamed a smile at me.

I reflected that perhaps a cheerful, carefree Pokémon such as this was exactly what I needed to help with Caliban; even if not for that reason he would prove useful on the battlefield – the ability of a Wobbuffet to take punishment was practically legendary. Battling a Pokémon such as this required a certain degree of care, something that I wasn’t certain Caliban would be capable of – particularly in the mood he was currently in, so that meant it would be up to Zuse.

“Sure, I’ll have a crack at capturing her,” I said slinging Zuse’s Pokéball forwards and releasing my Metagross into the grass. Though shorter than many within its power range, the metallic behemoth towered over Wynaut as he coolly surveyed the scene – his multi-lobed brain running millions of instant calculations regarding the environment and his opponent.

The standard procedure for battling a Wynaut or Wobbuffet was to wear them down with non-damaging moves, to prevent them simply reflecting the damage with Counter or Mirror Coat. Unfortunately there was a high risk that this one would know Encore and thus be able to trap Zuse into a never-ending cycle of status moves that were more likely to wear him out than Wynaut; so it all came down to plan B – confusion. If Zuse went in with a powerful Physical move, then Wynaut would certainly respond with Counter, which meant that if Zuse pulled the move short and switched to a Special move then Wynaut’s Counter would have no effect.

“Ok Zuse, go in with Meteor Mash and follow up with Hyper Beam, just like in Helmand,” I yelled, knowing that he would remember having almost the exact same move pulled on him three years ago.

True to form Zuse telekinetically lifted himself off the ground and floated at high speed towards his target, a bright golden glow trailing smaller stars surrounding his front-left arm. Zuse closed the gap between the two of them quickly and swung his massive fist, stopping it mid-swing; the golden glow quickly condensed into an orange ball of energy clutched on the end of his arm before unleashing as a powerful beam in Wynaut’s direction.
