As I waited to throw the Pokeball that would hopefully give me my new prize, I was caught off guard when I saw Alomomola spring from the water. I was about to throw the device when I realized that Alomomola wasn’t fleeing or in pain at that moment. It had reversed course so that it was facing the water. A moment later a strong blast of water shot from its mouth and collided with the lake waters. I didn’t have time to wonder what it was doing because a moment later a very angry roar directed to my attention to Gyarados, who was just coming out of the lake waters to be blasted in the face with the boosted Hydro Pump. The scene resembled that of a Pokemon trying to swim upstream against a heavy current.

But Gyarados didn’t give up. He continued to fight for every inch forward until he was within biting distance of his foe. With another roar he moved forward and viciously bit at the flesh of Alomomola. Alomomola screeched and fell back into the water, Gyarados right behind her. I waited a tense moment, but Gyarados surfaced soon after. An ugly snarl across his features, he was clearly tired but more than willing to continue the fight. Alomomola surfaced not more than a second later moving slowly as teeth marks dotted its pink skin. When I saw that, I chucked the Pokeball and waited to see what happened. I saw a brief flash, but couldn’t see much more than that because of the still pouring rain.

“Congrats,” I heard Carter saw a moment later. I felt a small twinge of elation, because that must have meant I had captured the little tyke. As he retrieved the Pokeball from the water I recalled Gyarados, giving him a few words of praise and encouragement. The hold Gyarados had on the weather was starting to die down and in no time at all the lake had returned once more to its restful state. “Where to now?” asked Carter.

“Well, Kyogre responds to your touch, why don’t you or the Pokemon guide our way forward?”

“Well, Kyogre responds to your touch, why don’t you or the Pokemon guide our way forward?” Garth responded.

"We'll just stay on the lake for now, then," I suggested, and when Garth didn't object I nodded to myself. I rubbed the Legendary Pokemon's tough hide, and once more it set off in a random direction, roughly at a right angle to the direction we had been travelling when the Alomomola had found us.

Thankfully, the sun wasn't too hot today. Contrary to popular belief, it can get pretty damn warm on the surface of a body of water, and I usually went far out of my way to avoid heat. The sun wasn't high up in the sky, though - it must have been about three o'clock. I could have pulled out my PDA to check, but I was too lazy to. I didn't have any pressing matters, and if this Expedition turned out to be an over-nighter, I could live with that.

I heard a trilling call, and Kyogre slowed down. The call echoed across the lake again, and it sounded a little bit like singing. Suddenly, a long white Pokemon broke the surface of the water, and began swimming playfully in front of us. It was an Ice-type I hadn't seen for quite a while - a Dewgong. They usually preferred the colder part up near the mountains, but this one was out here for some unknown reason.

"I don't suppose you want to try and capture this one?" I asked, admiring the Water-type's beautiful horn as it knifed through the water.

“We’ll stay on the lake for now, then,” Carter said after thinking for a moment. With a silent signal between Kyogre and Carter we were off.

We had only been traveling for a minutes in the mild summer weather when a sound came echoing across the water. I felt the speed of Kyogre slow down and I started to look around for the origin of the sound. There was another sound and a moment later white Pokemon broke the surface of the water and swam over to us. It was all white and it sported a single horn atop its head. It was a Dewgong, a Water-Ice type Pokemon.

“I don’t suppose you want to try and capture this one?” the ranger questioned.

I didn’t have to think much about concerning this Pokemon. “No thanks, I have owned one before. Traded it away a long time ago. Let’s let it go and if not we can give it a doll.”

“No thanks, I have owned one before," my Trainer replied. "Traded it away a long time ago. Let’s let it go and if not we can give it a doll.”

"Alright, sounds like a plan," I said, and we ignored the seal. Kyogre swum onwards, but the Dewgong continued to frolic in front of us, being sure to match the Legendary Pokemon's speed so it stayed in the same place relative to us. After a few minutes of this, I sighed.

"Looks like it isn't going to go away. You're going to have to throw a doll to get rid of it," I said to Garth.

He grimaced, but pulled a PokeDoll out of his pack. It was shaped like a Nidorino, but I doubt that placed any modifier on its effectiveness. With a powerful throw, the young man had the doll land in the water near the Dewgong. It immediately stopped playing and inspected the plush toy for a moment, alert for any tricks. When none were found, the Ice-type grabbed the toy with its mouth and dove underwater. It did not re-emerge. I nodded, satisfied, and we moved on.

The water was slowly getting colder, and I knew we were near the upper network. It wouldn't be long before we had to get back onto the shore, and then Garth would need to make a concrete decision about where he wanted to go, but for now we were fine.

I spotted a Lapras off to our right in the distance, but it didn't appear to have noticed us yet. It was far more interested in something on a small rock spire sticking up out of the lake. I pointed to it, asking Garth silently if he wanted to go investigate it or not. My bet was not.

“Alright, sounds like a plan,” Carter said. Another silent message passed between him and Kyogre adn the legendary Pokemon began to move through the waters once more. However, the Dewgong, just like the Alomomola, was content to follow us. After a few minutes of watching and listening to the Dewgong I heard the ranger sigh. “Looks like it isn’t going to go away. You’re going to have to throw a doll to get rid of it.”

Jeez, Pokemon seemed in the mood to hang around today. I pulled the last Pokedoll out of my bag and tossed it to the white creature. Dewgong inspected the toy for danger before it grabbed it and disppeared underwater, not surfacing again.

We soon came across a large Lapras. It was busy doing something else and hadn’t seen us yet. I felt the gaze of Carter and shook my head. Lapras was my favorite Water type but I already had one.

Garth shook his head, indicating that he had no interest in the Lapras. I wasn't very surprised - even though he was supposedly a Water Pokemon collector he'd come looking for specific Pokemon. I was willing to bet that he already had one - Lapras was a pretty standard rare Pokemon in that they weren't common, but if you were someone you had one.

"Alright, let's just move on and hopefully it won't see us," I murmured. I tapped Kyogre with my foot and we sailed past. Thankfully, whatever the Lapras was interested in must have been a whole lot more fascinating than we were, so we sailed past it without a problem.

A couple of minutes later, the shoreline faded into sight, complete with the small cluster of mountains where the strongest and rarest Water and Ice types were found. I pointed it out to Garth - seeing as he didn't seem to care where we went, I figured that'd be the best place to go. If he had a problem that, he could speak up and we'd go somewhere else, no hard feelings.

Kyogre rumbled, and I realised that something was watching us from in the water. I looked to the right, and saw a yellow-brown rock following us. It was segmented and had spikes. It wasn't until I saw some blue tentacles moving along beside it. The rock was actually an Omastar, a rare and powerful Fossil Pokemon. I pointed it out to Garth and asked him if he wanted to try and catch it.

“Alright, let’s just move on and hopefully it won’t see us,” Carter said.

I was glad to see that the Lapras didn’t pay us much mind as it was totally engrosed in what it was doing. Which was good because I didn’t want to use a doll and because Lapras could be tough to take down.

A few mintues after leaving the Lapras behind we started to come acros a small cluster of mountains. I was too busy looking at them that I didn’t notice Kyogre communicate something to Carter until he talked to me. It turned out an Omastar was following us, its rocky shell barely visable. It yellow eyes, blue body and short tentacles were hidden underneath the waves.

“Want to catch it?” I heard Carter ask.

“No thanks, I already have one. Let’s see if it will leave us alone, if not Pokedoll time.”

“No thanks, I already have one. Let’s see if it will leave us alone, if not: Pokedoll time," Garth replied.

    "Fair enough." I nodded.

We continued onwards, ignoring the Omastar, but it kept on following us. Finally Garth grunted disgustedly and pulled out his PokeDoll, throwing it into the ocean behind us. The Fossil Pokemon flew off in pursuit of the plush toy, trying to reach it before it sunk too far towards the bottom of the ocean.

We finally arrived at the lake's edge. Kyogre extended its fin and we walked off of it onto solid ground. I thanked the Legendary Pokemon and it sunk below the ocean. A spout of water shot up by way of farewell, and then the Water-type was gone from our sight. Another one was quick to take its place, though: a small turtle rose to the surface and yapped a greeting at us. It was another Fossil Pokemon - a Tirtouga. It smiled playfully at us.

"Well, interested in this one?" I asked.

I reached into my pack and withdrew my last Pokedoll. I chucked the toy at the Pokemon and watched as Omastar swam after the toy frantically.

After we left the fossil Pokemon behind us we didn't see any more Pokemon. Once we reached the shore Carter bid the legendary Pokemon farewell. "No thanks, it's not on my list to catch right now," Garth replied.

"Fair enough," I replied. Despite being incredibly rare, Fossil Pokemon weren't especially powerful. Most Trainers that came to the Park didn't catch them, unless they were ultra-rare, like Relicanth. I was instantly reminded of the time my good friend Cameron had come looking for a Relicanth to the exclusion of all else.

The Tirtouga yapped at us again as we made to set off, clearly unhappy that we were leaving it. I glanced at the turtle a little sadly, but there was nothing to be done. I shrugged an apology to the Water-type and I led my Trainer inland, away from the water so that the Tirtouga could not follow us.

It wasn't long before we encountered a winding dirt trail leading down from the mountains. The other direction seemed to head back towards the entrance. I couldn't decide which way to go, so I figured I'd ask Garth.

"Where do you want to go?" I asked him. "The mountains has more powerful and rare Pokemon, but more of them are Ice-typed."

“Fair enough,” Carter said, his voice had some sort of tone, but one I couldn’t place. I was wondering if he was a little put off by the Pokemon selection I had put off. If this had been a normal trip, I might have caught some of the different Pokemon on the list. Despite this he led us safely away from the Tirtouga, who yapped unhappily as we left it. I almost felt sorry for the little guy, but I knew he would find another trainer or different Pokemon.

Carter made his way through the brush until we came to a fork in the road. One led to the park entrance and the other up to the mountain. “Where do you want to go?” the ranger asked. “The mountains has more powerful and rare, but more fo them are Ice-Typed.”

“Let’s go to the mountain, I can still catch one more guy.”

"Alright, off we go," I huffed.

Together, we walked up the trail leading into the mountains. The trail passed through a small patch of trees. I led Garth right into it, somewhat foolishly. Every single time I'd gone through one of the few tree patches in the Lakes, a powerful Pokemon accosted us. This time was no different. About halfway through the plot, a humanoid Pokemon stepped out with a big toothy grin on its face, blocking our way.

It was a Toxicroak. Its body was almost completely blue, except for the big red blowsac on its upper chest. Its grin got even toothier as it looked Garth all over. Apparently, it liked what it saw. I knew Toxicroak was a rare Pokemon, but something told me Garth wouldn't be interested. What a pity. I would have loved to own a Toxicroak.

“Alright,” Carter said. He started up the trail that led deep into the mountains. Most of the mountain was bare and rocky with caves, but a few spots had groves of trees. Carter led us right into one grove. We had almost made it halfway through the cluster of trees when a Pokemon emerged. It was my favorite Poison type, a Toxicroak. Toxicroak were a blue frog that stood on two legs and had a large pouch of red skin beneath its mouth.

The look on Carter’s face told me he would love to have one under his control. This wasn’t too surprising as Toxicroak was a rare Pokemon and not many owned one. I knew of only two other trainers who had a Toxicroak. But while Toxicroak were rare and powerful they had a big weakness to Psychic type Pokemon. However, none of my Pokemon were Psychic, and only one of my guys knew a Psychic attack, Ludicolo. But if I sent out Ludicolo, Toxicroak could hit back hard with his numerous Poison attacks. That totaled gave me a few ideas to battle this guys.

“Tentacruel, you’re up first.” I grabbed his Pokeball and tossed it out. With a flash the large octopus Pokemon appeared. Tentacruel had a bulbous blue head with red poison sacks on either side of its head. Many gray and brown tentacles held the Pokemon up like legs. Tentacruel, like Gyarados, always tended to look a little mad during every occasion; today was no different. He fixed his eyes on Toxicroak and made a wheezing sound in greeting. It took him a moment to realize it wasn’t my Toxicroak flipper. He fixed me with a questioning stare. “I like frogs. Now, let’s start things off with your Confuse Ray and Icy Wind moves.”

I wanted Toxicroak to be confused in the hope that he would smack itself and do some damage because I didn’t have that many moves that could damage the Pokemon anyway. Icy Wind was just incase I had to send somebody out who was slower than Toxicroak.

To use Confuse Ray took Tentacruel a fair amount of concentration to use because it was a BM that I had taught him a long time ago. I mostly used Tentacruel to set up for stall battles or to end a stall battle. Hence his many non-damaging moves.

The Confuse Ray attack started with my Pokemon waving his tentacles about, and because he had a lot of the things it looked like a swirling mass of snakes moving about in synchronization. It almost resembled a living wall. The idea behind all the movement was to confuse the Pokemon momentarily while Tentacruel prepared to fire the orb of energy. It only took the Water Pokemon a few seconds to fire the attack before he moved onto the next one.

Unlike Confuse Ray, Icy Wind was not a BM but a TM that I used to reduce the speed of any Pokemon so I could use someone else to a greater advantage, like I wanted to do in this situation. Even though he was not an Ice type, his Water type background was the closest thing to an Ice type one could go, so it wouldn’t take much to use the attack. The other thing that gave him a slight edge was that we were near water and high in the mountains. Moisture was everywhere. With a small wave of his appendages a sudden gust of light wind sprang up over the lake, lifting drops of water from the surface and sending them towards the mountain, where the frosty air chilled the water until ice crystals had formed. With another wave Tentacruel sent that blast of winter air right at Toxicroak.

“Tentacruel, you’re up first,” Garth said, tossing a PokeBall out in front of him. A white flash revealed a Tentacruel - it was using its tentacles to hold its soft body off the ground. Most people wouldn't have thought that the aquatic Pokemon could walk on land, but a disastrous attack on a beach-side resort had taught us differently. The Tentacruel made a deep-toned wheeze in greeting. It looked over at the Toxicroak and smiled for a second, before turning back and looking questioningly at Garth.

“I like frogs," Garth said offhandedly by way of explanation. "Now, let’s start things off with your Confuse Ray and Icy Wind moves.”

Tentacruel raised about half of its tentacles off the ground and began waving them towards the Toxicroak. The Wild Pokemon inclined its head, apparently confused. The moving wall of gray lengths was almost hypnotic and served to distract the Toxicroak while Tentacruel charged the attack. After a few seconds a glowing, multi-coloured orb launched from the red jewel on the Water-type's forehead. It wobbled through the air and danced around the Toxic Mouth Pokemon. It turned around, trying to catch the orb, and after twisting around for a couple seconds it fell heavily onto its rump.

Tentacruel then began waving its tentacles in a different fashion. The air grew colder, and some visibly white air drifted throughout the trees to gather around the Water-type. It swirled mysteriously around Garth's Pokemon before blasting towards the Toxicroak. The Poison-type was knocked over onto its face. It got to its feet and grumbled unhappily before turning to face its opponent. Its tongue stuck out cheekily at Tentacruel and it hopped from foot to foot, grinning evilly. It was a Taunt, and a very effective one - even my blood was boiling from watching it.

The orb of energy that represented Confuse Ray sped towards Toxicroak’s head where it spun about lazily. The Poison type Pokemon tried to catch the orb, hitting and biting at it, but it couldn’t seem to make contact. After a few seconds it fell to the ground heavily, a dazed look on its face. The Pokemon tried to shake the cobwebs and rose to its feet in a shaky manner, but as it did the Icy Wind attack Tentacruel had been preparing made an appearance. The gust of freezing wind blasted into Toxicroak and knocked the Pokemon onto its face, hard.

Toxicroak wasn’t going to give up, though. The Poison Pokemon rose up and croaked something before turning to face Tentacruel, who just stood there stoically waiting for my next command. Toxicroak must have determined I didn’t plan to attack it much so it decided to take some of my moves away by using Taunt. It did this by sticking his thick tongue out and hoping from foot to foot, an wicked grin on his face. It was a perfect goading move for Tentacruel.

I wasn’t too fazed by the attack, but Taunt always made me want to put the Pokemon in its place, but that couldn’t happen here if I was to catch it. I forced that emotion aside and decided to think on the situation. With Taunt in effect, Tentacruel couldn’t use a good third of his moves and that left only his attacking moves. The only problem was that Tentacruel’s damaging were mostly limited to Poison and Water typed attacks, which weren’t at all effective against this Pokemon. The Poison attacks wouldn’t even dent it, and the Water attacks would serve to only heal the Pokemon. That pretty much left me with two attacks for Tentacruel, Wring Out and Hidden Power.

Wring Out could do some damage because Toxicroak still had a high amount of health left, but Hidden Power was of the Flying type, the perfect choice for facing a Fighting type like Toxicroak.

My other options were to switch out to Gyarados, Ludicolo or Toxicroak. Each of them could use super effective moves also. Gyarados and my frog each knew the powerful Earthquake while Ludicolo knew Zen Headbutt, which would be most effective against the Poison-Fighting combo of the wild Pokemon.

I decided to stick with Tentacruel because he was still on the field and his Hidden Power wouldn’t harm the wild frog too much. “’Cruel, strike back with your Hidden Power move.”

Hidden Power was a move that all Pokemon could learn, either by TM or it was a level up move. Getting the technical machine and giving it to the Pokemon was easy, the trick was for the Pokemon learning it to achieve a calm inner self. The move was achieved by focusing the Pokemon’s power and then channeling it into something new. It took a lot of time and effort, for both trainer and Pokemon, to develop and then use the move.

It took no more than a few seconds for Tentacruel to achieve a sense of calm after being inflicted with the Taunt move. When he did though, a shimmering ball of light appeared over his head. Tentacruel then reached two of his tentacles skyward and grabbed the ball and moved it to where it settled in front of him.

“Tentacruel,” he said. It was a sharp and barely there motion, but I saw a subtle shift of the air around the orb. That distortion rushed towards the Toxicroak. Sometimes Hidden Power resembled other moves and right now it reminded me of a Air Cutter attack.
