I can foresee too many problem but hey.

I can't remember who but someone else already stated this idea a long time ago, it got shot down due to things like cheating ect.

I mentioned that in the spoiler, its just too easy to cheat and synth, i would only have it for basics cos most refs don't like those anyway.

Anyway, I do like the idea, but I feel it just wouldn't be practical given the cast amount of variety within URPG, you would have to program every move, and OK the pokemon aren't such a problem as the ref calc has that. And as mentioned, it would be hard to avoid cheating/abuse of the system.

Where as with refs, they have to at least ref every battle and it is third party to ensure fairness.

As for refs not liking basics, there are some who don't care and like the easy money. The reason they get annoying is because people staaall in them.

I could write one for IRC easily enough, although time consuming.

A) Payment: Either I get paid for all battles the refbot does because I made it, or no-one does really. Not a fair system for referees either way.

B) Cheating: Half of the referee's job is acting as an unbiased third party. The ref is the match offical. He checks stats to see if you've learnt the moves, if you even have the Pokemon. Even with the entire Ultra-dex programming into a bot, it has no idea if YOUR Pokemon knows the moves or not. A refbot cannot make human decisions.

C) Usability: A bot could only run on set commands. Everything would need to be carried out in format. Rules EXACTLY in format so it knew what it was reffing. Something a simple as writing "DP" instead of "D/P/Pt" or "Frz Clause" instead of "Freeze Clause" would break it. Moves typed EXACTLY as it knows them. For example: "Thunder Wave". It wont know what "Thunderwave" or "Twave" is. The reffing process itself is not all calculator input/output. A robot cannot mirror the human aspect needed. If you've used Brick Break constantly, I know what you mean when you say BB. Bot doesnt.

D) Logging: I, personally, hate it when other people log for me. I think the only time in the 1400 or so posts in my ref log someone else has posted is when I fell asleep and Xali paid me in full anyway. That was ok, since he actually knows how to post a log. ^.^

But what, the refbot has its own log? If anyone can post there, what stops me from posting 10 basics and claiming my evolved Pokemon? Or posting as many perma-basic battles as I like? Even if the refbot has internal logging which I/the creator could check, if someone simply puts two accounts in the IRC channel, it can for all intensive purposes appear to be a legit battle. A human might know its fake, but a bot wont.

Now I know the URPG runs on a honour system, so in part we have to trust our members. What I don't trust is programmable machines. If I can tell it what to do, other people can work out how to also.

I agree with said above. Also, same feeling for basics. I don't mind doing them, just not for stallers.

Monbrey and Buzzer pretty much said why it isnt a practical idea. Also most refs will ref basics as long as you dont be stupid and stall or acc/evasion hax. Personally im fine with it if you wanna set up one turn then go on to 2HKO or OHKO, jus not when people know they are gonna lose but spam Double Team

I'd probably hardcode a ragequit into the ref bot for that anyway. XD

I think one of the bigger problems with this idea is because even if there is a system in place, URPG would no longer be special. URPG will be just another online simulator like Shoddy or Pokemon Online, and there is really nothing special on URPG anymore other than the fact that you start on a 'journey'. And, what would happen if such a system is being put into place? Where do people get their income from?

I believe part of the reason URPG is rather successful is because of the effort-and-reward scheme that URPG plays by. By having people put in effort which helps the community to grow and prosper (eg. reffing battles), they get paid themselves to buy Pokemon and TMs. So not only is reffing something special and exclusive in URPG, it is also reffing that allows people in the URPG to get money which also happens to be the primary way of earning money.

lets call it the "stall Clause"

Any move that will make the battle take longer (eg. defense boosts, evasion hax) would cause an auto loss.

We just need to figure out exactly which moves to ban

LOL'd at the clause idea. Sorry, but people need to realise that basics arent important and accept it if they are gonna lose them.
