Quick Question: Does a story to catch the Pokemon have to be whatever number of characters up to their capture, or could their capture be at the beginning of the story and then fill up the characters afterwards?

From what I can tell, you can catch the Pokemon you want in the beginning of your story and write some stuff that happens afterwards, but you need to have am event or something that allows for a choice to be made depending on capture. For instance, you could capture Yamba early on but then have it meet another Yamba and have it decide whether it wants to stay with you or go with the Yamna. Or, someone could steal your newly captured Yamna and you have to get it back, ending the story with some sort of choice that must be made. I'm not entirely sure though, but I have read several stories that have after bits that were included and others that were not included in the character count.
Yep, there definitely has to be a choice at the end. You can't capture a Pokemon have merry times and then go to bed though. You don't even need to capture though, friendship or partnering choices are good too.

Ah, ok. Because in my story, the guy catches a Yanma, then heads back to the base and some stuff happens to wrap up that part but doesn't involve Yanma really. Is that fine?

Hehe, I assumed. But yeah. Catching isn't actually as inflexible as a lot of people think. The story's culmination doesn't have to have anything to do with the capture itself, unless the lack of a strict capture prevents the story from being fundamentally "URPG"... which is something that graders technically are only supposed to harp about if the writer's piece is sub-standard.

So, to sum up, you can do whatever you want, as long as you catch the Pokemon somehow at some point and it fits with the right character length?

I didn't even have any Pokemon-catching in my last story.
(Then again, it hasn't been graded yet. Backlog's about two-and-a-half weeks right now. I should get on that.)
I grade things for the URPG.
New experimental grading system. Request a tier after I claim your story:
Tier I / Basic: A quick verdict and some useful advice without much fuss.
Tier II / Normal: More in-depth analysis.
