"Mini, take good care of Rea!" The man said, straight blond hair just sticking from his head. His identical-looking wife honked the car in impatience, knowing they were already running late for the party. The maid nodded her head, the dark black fringe of hers blocking the blue eyes that shone in the darkest nights.
"I'll take good care of Mini- oh, and Silica." Mini said, and a little girl ran out of the humble house onto the simple stone-paved porch, pulling the trousers of her maid. Her yellow pigtails held many pink accessories. The Mareep followed her like a loyal dog, and acted like one too, sitting at her feet.
"Mini, I'm sleepy. Story time?" Rea complained, and Mini petted her head, smiling sweetly. Of course, at that time, she didn't know what was going to happen to her.
"Okay, Rea. I'll read you your story. Be a good girl and change into your pajamas." Mini said, and Rea nodded, dashing into the house and up the stairs in an instant, and Silica running up after her. Mini, however, followed slowly, feeling like age was dragging her down. After fighting against poverty as a child and finally working for a kind, normal family for so many years, it now felt that time passed too quickly, and memories faded away. Mini was with the family when Rea was born, when Rea got her Mareep Silica, and when their house caught fire at midnight, she swiftly put it out before the rest of the family even knew, only learning about it when the sun rose and they noticed the charred area in the living room.
"I'm changed, Mini! Can you read me a story now?" The little girl yelled, and Mini quickened her pace. Rea sat on her cherry red bed, the bedsheets decorated with pictures of Silica stapled to them. The Mareep curled up in the little basket, cushioned with soft padding, looking up at her master.
"Okay, Rea," Mini said, her wrinkled hands grabbing a book from a shelf next to the bed. It was written by Hans Chikorita Anderson, Rea's favorite author. Seating herself with a small stool, Mini began. "Once upon a time..."
"Silica, you want to follow me?" Mini asked, the small sheep slowly making its way down the stairs and then looking at Mini with puppy eyes. It could go up easily, but going down was quite a challenge. Mini picked up the little Mareep and made her way to the living room. To Mini, it was too early yo sleep at eight. She liked to watch television, especially cartoons. Mini didn't have her fair share of humor when she was a child, which she spent performing illegal work to scrooge enough pennies to live off. Where she was born, finding dead people on the street wasn't unusual, even when the corpses were rotting.
Mini jumped when Silica suddenly snarled, turning her head right. Mini followed, and looked out the glass, sliding door and at the small backyard. In there was a beautifully carved angel statue. The face was peaceful, its eyes closed, but it still gave off a disturbing aura. Mini didn't know there was an angel statue there, but she shrugged it off. The family was used to purchasing items without telling her. Why would they have too?
Mini fumbled the remote, her hands getting clammy. Even when the cartoons were showing nonsensical animations which often made Mini laugh, she couldn't now. Her heart beat against her chest as she constantly darted her eyes right. Silica was still hissing at the statue, and lying on Mini's leg, as if to protect her. Finally, after quite a long time of suspense, Mini couldn't take it anymore. She reached for the family phone.
The line was cut.
Mini gasped, her eyes widened, before making a mad dash upstairs into Rea's room. Even in her frantic state, she made sure she didn't wake up the girl, still peacefully asleep. Mini grabbed her cellphone, which Rea only used in times of emergency, and dialed her parent's number. Mini couldn't help but look out of the window which looked down on the backyard. Pushing away the decorated curtain, Mini looked down.
The angel statue seemed to have tilted its head up, looking at Mini. Its eyes were still closed, but the serenity that surrounded it was replaced by malice. A chill went down Mini's spine as she closed the curtain. Mini tried to call, but she was met with a message she didn't want to see.
The 'No battery' sign was on the otherwise blank screen of the cellphone. Mini gulped, running down the stairs, grabbing a few coins on the way. She dashed out onto the porch, and out of the gates. She searched for a public phone, and finally found a booth. She ran, tripping just before she reached it, and clumsily entered the numbers.
"Oh yeah!" Rea's mother said as she danced to the sound of the music, her husband dancing nearby. This was an adult's birthday party, not to mention also her daughter's passing-with-flying-colors celebration from University.
The phone rang in her pocket, and she answered it. "Hello? Who is this?"
"It's me, Mini. Sorry to disturb you, but could you get rid of the angel statue at the backyard when you return? For now, can I simply cover it with a blanket? It's disturbing me." In came the trembling voice of Mini. Rea's mother immediately turned pale. A thousand thoughts raced through her mind at that moment.
"Get Rea to a safe place. I'll tell my husband and call the police. We have no angel statue."
When the police arrived a mere three minutes later, the three occupants inside were dead, Mini merely seconds away from the door, holding Rea in her arms. Their mutilated face couldn't give any evidence of what they saw. Silica's body was outside Rea's room.
No angel statue was found.
