    Default The Real Next Tournaments

Okay, so the Gym Leader Tournament specifications are nearing to an end. I think the other thread got too excited about it that other tournament ideas received little notice. Anyway, here are some of the ideas that were posted:

    • Budget (Fawkes.): Each player gets a certain amount of money to buy Pokemon FOR TOURNAMENT USE ONLY and their moves. Prices are based on story characters for story mons.
    • Buy-In (Mubz): All players must pay 10k to enter. The prize for this tournament is purely money, that is, the winner gets all of the entrant fee money.
    • Gameboy (Neonsands): All battle use Gameboy rules.
    • Partner Based (???): People are battling with a partner, possible double battle, possibly single. Partner is possibly random. Not much worked out.
    • RISK (???): Not completely sure how it works off the top of my head.

    Budget tournament is interesting.

I'm thinking the Buy-In idea could just be sort of like a mini tournament. I'm not sure if newer players and those that don't consider themselves that good would want to enter, since they might think they have no chance of winning and therefore consider it a waste of 10k. Therefore, the tournament would probably be smaller than usual, and it wouldn't really take the spot of some other tournament, it would just be on the side. Who knows, though, maybe people will enter anyway. Also, on AIM, some were saying that 1st place should get like 70% of the money, 2nd place 20%, 3rd 10%, something like that.

    Gameboy is Gameboy.

A partner based tournament was a really popular idea when I IM'd people for ideas. It could be hard to get battles done, though, since it requires four whole people to be on at the same time, and a ref.

Risk has no sponsor, and I really don't want to handle it, AND it could be an epic fail since it sounds like it depends on activity.

So what do you like, and would you enter in the Buy-In tournament? Also, post your own ideas or tell me if I forgot yours!

    Budget: cool idea, I'm game
Buy-in: Works, but yes, the prize money needs to be spread around more (with the winner still receiving by far the majority) to encourage activity.
Gameboy: Pretty secure tournament that will probably get a lot of entrants.
Risk: I don't really see this working. URPG seems like it's experiencing a slow period, and Risk would need an active group of players so it wouldn't drag on, so for now I'd say now on it.

As of now, my vote goes for the Budget idea. It's something that I've never done, and looks like a lot of fun. If not that, then I'd like the Buy-in. Other two are meh.

The problem with a buy-in tournament is that generally that format is used so the people can vary their stake in the total prize pool. I'd love to see it done, but it requires a lot of careful planning. It's been done with TV shows and stuff in past.
Basically, a new player who probably doesn't have much chance of winning will probably only want to wager $1,000 entry. Elites would be much more willing to spend $50,000 for the sake of a big return. It also depends on the numbers. If we used a fixed system, say a $5000 entrance fee, and then we get 40 entrants, thats a $200,000 prize pool, probably a bit large for a single winner. If we set it at $1000 and get 10 people, it's pretty pathetic.

I do REALLY like the Budget idea though. So often we get complaints about people not being on even footing in tournaments and it ends up falling to "All EMs", something I've never really liked. I think the budget would be great for maintaining the level playing field while still giving contestants unique Pokemon, ones that feel like their own since they've chosen how to EM it themselves. All it would require would be some form of tournament stats page. The same Pokemart could be used, just write TOURNAMENT PURCHASE at the top so the approver knows.

I'm not sure I follow you on how a buy-in that varies by person will work. I envisioned it as everyone paying 10k. Could you elaborate?

Also, copying and pasting the Pokemart into a new thread could probably work as well. Furthermore, it could be the place to buy story mons and Daycare stuff.

Budget Tournament: I like this idea - it strips away any advantages that veterans have regarding Pokemon, and just sounds like a really cool idea overall. I think there should be a separate (temporary) PokeMart for it though - mixed orders could get confusing.

Buy-In Tournament: Sounds like fun, but if what Monbrey is saying is that newbies would be discouraged by the buy-in price and the low chance of return then I agree with him. Furthermore, scaled buy-in prices would get ugly and it'd be hard to organise. Basically, I like the premise, but I don't think it would work in practise.

Gameboy Tournament: Hell, this is practically a fixture in URPG as well. Definitely run it.

Partner-Based Tournament: Definitely sounds like fun. I understand your worries regarding everyone being active at once, and that's certainly a bit of a worry, but this would still be heaps of fun. I think the fix would be to allow people to choose their partners and then tell people to make sure to choose a partner that is online at the same time as them for fear of being booted.

Risk Tournament: Sounds like the most fun out of all of them, but like Roulette said, this would be freaking huge, and I really do doubt that it would reach the end. It'd be heavily dependant on activity, which we all know is flagging a bit recently.

    tl;dr:

1st Preference: Budge Tournament. A novel idea that allows balance between everyone.
2nd Preference: Gameboy Tournament. Something that is (or at the least, should be) a URPG annual event that's quick and simple and yet differs a lot from normal URPG play.
3rd Preference: Partner-Based Tournament. Sounds like lots of fun, although there may be timezone issues.
4th Preference: Risk Tournament. Huge potential, but also will probably go inactive.
5th Preference: Buy-In Tournament. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad idea, the others are just better. Personally, I wouldn't drop more than 5k on it though.

Mubz's idea isn't really concerned about encouraging a large amount of people in. Like I said it would be more like some kind of side event; if only 10 people want to play it would be fine.

Budget: This one has a lot of promise too, and I'd definitely compete in it. The budget would probably have to be pretty large to fund 4-6 mons though.
Buy-In: I like this idea too, but even if the pool of battlers is small (say ten), the winner's purse, if they get all the entry fees, is too large imo (100,000).
Gameboy: Yes, do this. I think I mentioned it in one of my posts too.
Partner Based: I'm down for this one, though the number of people needed for a battle would probably be difficult to get all the time, and I've heard a fair few refs say they don't like to ref doubles anyway XD
RISK: Like the others said, I don't really think activity would match what's required to do something like this, although the idea is cool.

I like the idea of a seperate Pokemart for the Budget tourney, I could see things getting really mixed the hell up. Plus, since story mons will have a set price and stuff, they would need to have a section in the Pokemart that people could refer to, and having to look back at the tourney thread and then to the Pokemart would be complicated/confusing. So yeah, in the tourney thread, the main post about rules, etc. could just have a second post under it with the modified Pokemart, and players could make their purchases there.

I really like the idea for the Budget tourney. Pretty much a unique idea and look really fun.
The Buy-In Tournament was never meant to be a large scale tournament. When i thought it up really i figured that at max there would be 10 people entering. It would be sort of a side tournament alongside a bigger tourney. Although the cost could be scaled back if we wanna make it larger. Im also totally for having people who are 2nd/3rd taking a share of the prize money to make people more interested.
The GBA seems pretty cool, but id have to go for the Budget Tourney over this.
Doubles would be interesting, and since its random it would be more competitive.

Budget: Yes, sounds fun and I would enter.
Buy-In: Interesting concept, but as the others state I think it would be too complicated and the return is questionable.
Gameboy: I hate these tournaments where other people like them.
    Partner: Activity
Risk: Should be done in the summer months.

Budget (Fawkes.): Seems like a hassle to buy mons and all, but prob would be fun.
    Buy-In (Mubz): I'm down with this. :0
Gameboy (Neonsands): Not really feeling this. Gameboy is kind of lame in URPG. Why not just PO, right? q_q
Partner Based (???): Please do this.
RISK (???): too risky dont do it

Buy-In (Mubz): Meh it's alright. It may not attract as many entrants due to the entry fee, and the (I'd say) slightly lower chance of winning anything, but....
Gameboy (Neonsands): Not really feeling this. Gameboy is kind of lame in URPG. Why not just PO, right? q_q Also, kind of not that exciting for a tournament.
Partner Based (???): Please do this. It'd be difficult to organize battles as Pidge said, but if people schedule, then it would be so awesome of a tournament. :] Especially after the first round where the inactives (if any) are rooted out.
RISK (???): too risky dont do it

    I rank them:

Partner Based, Budget, Buy-In, Gameboy, Risk

    Pref. first two please.
