1. Opening Word
Hello there, welcome back for another URPG Times. A lot has been happening over the last month, so I’m just going to dive straight into the news segment of this month’s Times.
2. URPG News
Summer Writing Competition - The SWC is in full swing with voting currently taking place now. Most of the entries to this competition have been epic stories massing totals of over 100k characters. It’s not surprising that the wonderful Smiles has increased the pay for voting to $5,000.
Risk - This is still happening. ATF has had to take a small leave of absence, so the event is now in the capable hands of BlueTowel. Sadly, Green team has been eliminated, and Blue has been plagued by inactivity. However, Red Team seem to be making a last minute sprint to the end.
Pokémafia - Thank you Feng for hosting yet another awesome Pokemafia. Sadly, the Mafia won this game; a lot of the village seemed fairly inactive, and the Mafia had managed to get their hands on a list made by Nitro showing all the the villagers’ abilities. (Felly’s Notes: LOL. More like “AWESOME. MAFIA GOT THEIR HANDS ON A LIST. THANKS, NITRO, BBY. <3)
Free For All Tourney - Synthesis is currently hosting a FFA Tourney. So far, five free for alls have happened, although as of writing, the results have only been tabulated for the last four. So without further delay, I will tell you who is in the running for a prize right now.
1st Place: Synthesis (he’s probably going to win his own tourney) (Felly’s Notes: Why is Syn in first? What is this I don’t even.)
2nd Place: WinterVines
3rd Place: SLC
4th Place: Akinai
5th Place: Fawkes
6th Place: Maxie (this newcomer seems to be having some success with his now trademark Ampharos)
PWN Birthday - So today, the day this issue of the times goes out, is in fact PWN’s birthday. The old The Pokemon World site was rebranded and The Petalburg Woods Network was born a year ago today. Since then we have seen many enthusiastic new members from PWN including Smiles and Felly.

4. Meme of the Moment
First of all, we have a comic submission from Voltaire Magnezone.
Well done, VM! Give yourself a pat on the back and post to claim 2k for your submission.
Now I bring you my favourite meme, straight from Pokememes.com.
I saw this and instantly thought of poor old besty and his plucky Flareon.
Because this is something we all need to know.
5. Interview with Felly
(Felly’s Note: The italicized parts are my responses, and the non-italicized parts are the interviewer’s questions.)
Today, for this month’s interview, I'm joined by Felly. Most people will know her as one of the head admins from the Petalburg Woods Network. Hello there, Felly.
So Felly, most people know you from PWN. How did you get involved in PWN?
Well, a friend of mine, his username's Person Man on PWN, invited me to join, so I did, & then I just sort of stuck around.
What aspect of PWN was the biggest draw for you?
Hm, I can't really remember, to be honest. I like to think it was the RP aspect, & to be able to do that again kind of excited me. It was a small, seemingly inactive board in those days, but I like to think I brought life to it. A fresh face does that sometimes.
So was it through your RP that you became more involved with the running of PWN? And how did you transition from a new face to one of the head admins?
Haha, sure, we can run with that. I was actually modded to head the RP section soon after I joined, I guess 'cause I had the RP background & all. (I've kinda been doing it since I was 10.) But then when TPW changed from that to PWN (WHICH IS A YEAR OLD ON AUGUST 18TH. WOOOO~), I became a super mod, & in the latter half of 2012, I was asked to fill the place of admin, so I did.
Funny you should mention that because PWN turns 1 year old on the day this issue of the Times comes out. Can you tell us what the guys and girls at PWN have been doing to celebrate?
OKAY, WELL, THAT'S COOL. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PWN. WOOOOO~ Ahem, anyways, so I sort of came up with this idea of a birthday extravaganza that's vaguely like the winter camp I hosted back in December to celebrate PWN's one year anniversary & show that, despite the struggles we've faced & all, we're still fighting to be active. But basically, the extravaganza is a nice little event to bring together the members of PWN~ A lot's happened in the past year, & together as a forum, we've grown, & I hope we continue to grow over the next several years. (Felly’s Note: I shouldn’t be allowed to get sappy while I do interviews. The sappiness comes after extravaganza, guys. Sorry.)
Which event of the Extravaganza has been your favourite so far?
the part where i procrastinate on typing everything up until the absolute last minute and freak out because i don't think it's gonna get done & i get super distracted and procrastinate moreUm... hm. I dunno, to be honest. This isn't really an event per se, but I like seeing how everyone's coming together and making new friends and meeting new people. I guess in terms of actual events, I'd have to pick the Mafia 'cause even though it was kind of poorly planned on my behalf, the thread itself is kinda funny. I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND THOSE MEMBERS THAT I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE DESTROYED AND SHATTERED DURING THE GAME OF POKEMAFIA. (Felly’s Note: No, seriously. That’s not my fault.)
So you’re also the very active in URPG. How did you find URPG and want made you want to join?
Well, URPG apparently went to PWN back when it was still TPW. (I dunno, I never really paid attention in those days. dat high school. #badmod) I didn't actually know about it till I was talking to Smiles and Sheep (whose username is currently Janna on PWN), & they suggested I join. So I did. .-. AND NOW CLEARLY I'M HERE, AND YOU ALL HAVEN'T SCARED ME OFF YET. I vaguely remember seeing it on BMGf though, but that was before I left that forum; I never looked into it till PWN though.
Since joining URPG, you’ve participated in many tournaments, took part in the PWN Dojo League, even became a gym leader, and now you are also a ranger. #pleasetakemycurrentrun What do you feel is your best moment so far?
THE FFA WHERE MY ZAP CANNON HIT ASH'S LUGIA & KO'D IT. (Which the log for can be found here in case you want to read about how I got third place. xD) Also becoming a grader, a ranger, & winning FFAs 'cause that's pretty cool too. (Felly’s Note: That FFA win was a win at heart. Let’s face it. Alakazam took out a Lugia. gfg)
Hehehe, winning ffa’s are always fun. So what is next for Felly and PWN?
Well, Felly's gonna go catch up on the sleep she missed out on... OH WAIT, COLLEGE IS A THING. WHAT IS SLEEP?! But srsly, I think we'll be hosting more events & more fun things for the PWN members to do in the future. I can say that the next big thing we'll be doing is something for X/Y, & more information will be coming out on that in September.
Well, Felly, I’ll let you get a few hours sleep before Winter’s FFA. On a final note, how do you fancy your chances?
Pshh, I'm not gonna take a nap now. I'd totally miss the FFA. I don't take naps. I take sleeps, which are like long naps. But uh, based on what I rolled earlier & sent to Winter early this morning in anticipation of missing send time, I think I'll be out early on, but that send may change before the FFA actually starts. We'll have to see~ (Felly’s Note: If you’re all curious as to what I was originally going to send, it was going to be No Guard Machamp with the Vampirism ability thing.)
6.Story of the Month
So this has been tough with so many SWC stories out there, all of a very high calibre and all brilliant reads. However with so many of them being huge epics, I decided to go for a story that had a great emotional impact on me and managed to do it with a more limited character count.
Olivia’s Playground by Fawkes
Well done, Fawkes! You can post to claim $2,000. Keep up the writing!
7. Roleplay of the Month
This goes to Ace Trainer Liam for his brilliant work in the National Park.
Nice to see newer members getting involved in the park.
Well done, Liam! Post to claim $2,000! Keep it up! (Felly’s Note: OH HAYYYY. THAT’S MY RUN. WOOO~ why am i allowed to do these notes? omg.)
8. Featured Art
So LET’S GET CREATIVE!
Ok, that was maybe over the top. The first piece of art comes from Elysia. I really like this image and the idea of the cubone seeking shelter from harsh weather by building a nest out of its dead mother’s bones.
This next piece is from a new member, Eclipsi. I personally love the use of the reds and browns; it’s very colourful and very fun looking; well, sort of some of those Diglett look really annoyed.
Elysia and Eclipsi, post to claim your $2,000! Well done on being selected!
9. Flavour of the Month
So this month we take a look at another confirmed Fairy type, Gardevoir.
If you own Gardevoir or any of its pre-evolutions, feel free to post and claim your free 2k.
Gardevoir will be a Psychic and Fairy type, leaving it with 4 weaknesses: Bug, Dark, Poison, and Steel. However, with its Psychic typing, high Special Attack stat, and STAB Psychic, it is able to deal with all the Poison types it could previously. Steel is an interesting weakness; there are not many Steel type pokemon and a fairly limited selection of Steel type moves. However, Hidden Power Fire deals with those pesky Steel types and Bug types, and most Gardevoir should consider HP Fire to counter Scizor and Escavalier anyway.
Overview of Gardevoir
Gardevoir is often used as a offensive Pokemon, making use of its excellent selection of coverage moves. It’s also the only fully evolved Pokemon with the Ability Trace; Trace allows it to copy an opposing Pokemon’s Ability and makes it useful but very situational.
When Pokemon is inflicted with burn, paralysis, or poison, the enemy receives the status as well.
Copies foe's ability.
DREAM WORLD ABILITY
Avoids direct-damaging moves from allies.
Gardevoir, as you can see, has a very high Special Attack stat as well as a very high Special Defense stat, making it is an effective special wall and allowing it to use its significant range of coverage moves to scare out opposing Pokemon. However, its middle of the road Speed value and abysmal Defense and Attack stats really let it down.
Calm Mind, Captivate, Charm, Confusion, Double Team, Dream Eater, Future Sight, Growl, Heal Pulse, Healing Wish, Hypnosis, Imprison, Lucky Chant, Magical Leaf, Psychic, Stored Power, Teleport, Wish
So as you can see, Gardevoir already gets access to some good moves in Psychic and Calm Mind, allowing it to boost; it also gets access to Wish and Heal Pulse, allowing it to act in a supporting role during regular battles or free for alls.
Toxic, Hidden Power, Taunt, Light Screen, Protect, Safeguard, Thunderbolt, Return, Shadow Ball, Reflect, Skill Swap, Snatch
Focus Blast, Energy Ball, Charge Beam, Thunder Wave, Psych Up, Substitute, Trick Room
These TM’s give Gardevoir significantly more coverage. Will o Wisp, Toxic, and Thunder Wave give it the option to inflict status on a switch in, and Snatch and Skill Swap allow it to troll. (Felly’s Note: Gardetroll.)
Confuse Ray, Destiny Bond, Encore, Shadow Sneak,
Encore is a great move for any Pokemon that can learn it, and allows it to be a pain in the back side. Destiny Bond is useful in a situation when you know you die. Shadow Sneak gives Gardevoir some priority and Confuse Ray for more hax.
Icy Wind, Pain Split, Signal Beam, Trick, Heal Bell
Icy Wind and Signal Beam give you yet more coverage, and Pain Split gives another way of regaining health; in some situations, it is more beneficial than Wish. Trick gives you the opportunity to trick an opponent a choice scarf or similar item, also handy if you go against a Pokemon trying to get the benefit of Toxic Orb if you manage to trace Poison Heal. Heal Bell also allows it to perform a cleric role along with Wish from earlier.
