Hey, guys - should I accept the last person who signed-up for my mafia game? They did say they "Might be in" but they didn't give me an answer when I asked for confirmation ;_;

I would mention them to clarify if they want to stick around.

One of my pet peeves are loose lips -- when someone leaks secrets in public while acting that they aren't. For example:
The day after the doctor dies: "I sure hope that someone revives the doctor tonight ; )"
Cop with a guilty: "Phoenicks has to be mafia, I'm 100% sure and I'm not explaining why."
Someone publicly claims to have been doctor protected: "I know for a fact that they weren't protected last night."
(The first implies that you're the reviver; the second that you're cop; the third that you're the doctor. In all three cases you have given up valuable information (that will get you killed) without any obvious trade-off.)
--The first example is the worst: you have soft claimed without benefit or purpose. In this particular example, since it's a night phase, the mafia could actually stop your plan. This is one of the absolute worst ways to share information.
--The second example is poor play: if you can't lynch someone without resorting to your report, then you should out as cop. Implying that you may be cop empowers the mafia because they know more about the game than you do and are more likely to believe that you're cop than the rest of the town.
--The third example falls between the first two: If doubt can exist as to a claim someone makes, then you don't always need to claim to illustrate that doubt. If there is a blatant lie that you need to correct, then softclaiming, again, gives the town more information than the town. *
I've always thought of this as a cross between roleplaying and roleclaiming. Roleplaying can be fun in a mafia game but should (in general) not affect the way you play.
On that note, another great pet peeve is when the reporter claims and is known to be the reporter, and then continues to write reports while ending them with something like "Signed, Phoenicks".
*Softclaiming a role you don't have is separate.
@Phoenicks Everything is a softclaim, Nick.![]()
YES!!! MY MAFIA GAME DROUGHT IS FINALLY OVER!!!!![]()
Harry Potter! ^_^
If someone tells me it's wrong to Hope for Victory, I'll prove them wrong every time.
After I asked that question I soon decided on Doctor Who but then Paperhorse made me realize a Doctor Who is game presumably coming up.
So Harry Potter it is.
I'm going to assume since you posted all of that unsolicited that you want to talk about it. :p
This can be said of all three of your examples, but I think this one is the best fit: I've seen this more often as an example of poor/lazy cop-play than intentionally softclaiming. Rather than build an actual case, they'll claim a gut-tell or, "there's just something off about that one thing they said... can't put my finger on it. Must be scum," etc. Of course you're right that more often than not they succeed in tipping the Mafia off to their role without the Town figuring it out (or following their weak lead), I just think it's more because some players feel getting the Cop role is a license to be lazy and stop scumhunting than because they actually thought softclaiming was a good idea.

Noting a big lol right now.
With the mafia games sign up thread there are no small games up right now; and 3 of the 4 in waiting are being hosted by people already hosting. Master Mew, Zenax, and myself. :P
So shouldn't two of those be taking sign ups, or skipped to ones ready until the host is ready to start?
"I'm coming like a wyvern in heat."
I'll see what I can do about it... I'll wait a day or two for confirmation.
