Thread: About Username Changes

Bulbagarden gives everyone the option to change their own username. However, there is a wait time between changing from one name to the next so we don't put too much strain on server.

Admins (the only staff who can change usernames) have been happy to change a users's name when they mistakingly change it instead of their user title, for example. However, we would appreciate it if you only asked us to change your name because of an error you made with it, not to get around the wait period between name changes. This also eases confusion of other users who may lose track of what name you're going by.

I only asked once, but still, I apologize. I'll be sure to be more careful in the future. I had no idea it put a strain on the server.

I actually was thinking that lots of username changes probably strains the server a bit, I'll keep that in mind.

I doubt name changing has performance impact worth worrying about, but I agree that it should not be used as a way of circumventing the system.

How long is the wait period again? It seems like months since I've seen the option to change my username.

It says under "Edit Profile". I believe it's 28 days.

I wonder why it couldn't have been 7 days, like the days before the forum upgrade.

Hmm... Maybe you have a point there, but for some reason, I don't think I like to stick with one username sometimes.

Being capricious with your username is indeed not the best way, since far too often others will not know how do you want to be referred as. Consistency is advantageous to familiarity.

I can see how a waiting time of 7 days would be kinda ridiculous, but nearly a whole month seems a little too long, especially if you're obsessed with getting the perfect username (which I am guilty of). Wouldn't three weeks be a better waiting period, while still remaining fair?

Anyway, I'm definitely guilty of abusing the name-change system as of late - I'll try to stop now.

Yeah I think a 3 week time period would be absolutely perfect:) Not to long & not to short!

I'm also guilty of changing my username a good deal of times. Heck, my last user title (under the username) was "The man of many names" :P

A note for anyone wanting to change names during BW2 release.

If you end up changing them, we won't be changing them back due to wanting to avoid too much sever stress.
