In a single tiny icy room, admittedly.

Though they COULD have used all the sea routes (which aren't that many due to them being clumped together in an small area) to put some water/ice pokémon in them.

Hoenn and Unova were excellent about diversity. Kanto was boring with few land marks. The only thing Sinnoh had going for diversity was snow(in only one city even after Platinum made a big deal about the cooler temperatures. I expected a couple of more snow covered cities/towns) and actually had few landmarks despite having the most myths and legendary pokemon. Johto was in the middle; it had diversity in cities/towns and landmarks, but lacked different environments other than the basic grass/cave/sea route.

I wish they would throw in some more odd landscapes like a oddly colored beach(and or desert) or a snow covered volcano. And maybe a montain that you don't scale using caves besides that one volcano. More buildings would be cool too.

Sinnoh was pretty terrible like this imo. I can barely remember anything about the map.

Hoenn til this day remains the most diverse region for me personally I just love tropicalness of it. In a very close second would be Unova it was a nice mix of everything from the cities to just everything else you could think about. Johto is third for being simple but not in a bad way it still has its magic that makes it likeable to me, plus it was the first Generation I played many years ago. Sinnoh is fourth just because the cities aren't very memorable to me even though I loved the Distortion World and wished it had been bigger. Kanto is last and there is nothing I can really say.

Most of them are very diverse and have unique areas. Hoenn was the best with this, as it had desserts, oceans, mountains, etc, its an interesting region to explore.Sinnoh had snowy areas, the first in any of the games and it was nice to see that. I definately think they should make them more diverse as it makes the game more enjoyable for people to play through.
