Default Termination of Gen IV and Gen V Wi-Fi Services on May 20th

Nintendo has announced that, as of May 20th 2014, all online services across the DS and Wii games will terminate. This means that you will not be able to go online with any of the following Pokémon games: Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Platinum, Pokémon HeartGold, Pokémon SoulSilver, Pokémon Battle Revolution, Pokémon Black, Pokémon White, Pokémon Black 2, Pokémon White 2, My Pokémon Ranch, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia & Pokémon Conquest. All online features of these games will be inaccessible, regardless of the console you play them on. All 3DS and Wii U games will continue to be playable online, as will Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter.

Thing is, they say "inaccessible" but there's no way to make the games themselves become incapable of connecting. I'm pretty sure they can still connect to spoof servers.

    Yeah, that sound about right.

As for me, it's not much of a loss -- haven't used G5 online features for awhile. Though one of my Pokemon (a wild Lanturn) is still stuck in the G5 Dream World. He'll never wake up. :(

(No wonder Pokemon nicknames are so difficult to think up.)

I hate that this is cutting off. I dont play online in Gen IV anymore but occasionally still trade in Gen V, which is not even old, though I can understand the service costs money to run and Nintendo wants to focus on the 3DS and Wii U. It's a shame :(

I'm a bit saddened too, never been much into gen IV but gen V is my favorite one so knowing I won't be able to battle, use the wifi battle subway or trade (gts negotiations was so much fun XD) is dissapointing. Have a buncha bros in other countries I won't play together with again >_<.
People who buy the game before this date and don't have people to trade or fight via infrared won't be able to fully enjoy those generations, repeating myself but BW and BW2 had too little life. They have to put a warning or something about the online functions down in the cases, BW is still in stores and more that one will buy the game thinking in online.
Kinda sad too about other games that lose wifi conection like animal crossing and SSB, not so much with Advance Wars but it was fun to play online stragedy battles XD.

Bad form nintendo. Your current platform plays those games and people use those services. Its not like Xbox live in which less than 100 people played a day and it was 4 years after the old console was discontinued. You probably still make and sell DS systems.

This is bad news for fifth generation and earlier battlers and traders, and a warning bell for those like myself to purchase both or the opposite version of the game they need ASAP.

    Actually, this makes me wonder...

What would happen when they decide to cut off 3DS support in future? That would basically mean that (unless a future console can recognise Gen V carts) transferring from Gens III-V up via Bank/Transporter would become impossible, would it not? That is a REAL warning bell there.

Considering the 3DS is almost four years old, there's bound to be a new system within the next year or two. As for backwards compatibility on the next system, It probably won't play DS games. If Nintendo really wants to move forward in handheld tech, they're going to have drop backwards compatibility with DS games. I can't see Nintendo supporting DS games past the 3DS. That would just be silly. I think all the pre 3DS main series games are going to be remade.

It'll happen, eventually, but the DS services went for almost a decade before being shut down.

Maybe someone could come up with a peripheral thingy with a DS card slot that can connect to whatever the new DS turns out to be. Or, maybe just have a new game system wirelessly connect to a 3DS with a Gen 4-5 game in it and read that.

Oh dear. Considering Gen V really just ended, this doesn't bode well for them financially... whether it be due to trying to get people to upgrade to new consoles or because they don't want to pay for the servers (or a combination) it means they're bad enough off to risk pissing off a gigantic chunk of their customer base as well as giving us a reason to be concerned for the fate of current gen consoles' features in the future.

I think it was a few months too soon, with very little notice (3 months is short 0_0, especially with X/Y being so new still). I think they were better off making it the end of the year.

Thankfully I don't use wi-fi anymore on the Gen. V games and will be unaffected by this.
