You know that pokemon map is made of "Tile", that means you can only move one tile up, down, left, right. Gen V offer you "true" 3D map, but it uses tile system. But do you think Gen VI should offer non-tile system, like GCN's Pokemon Colosseum/XD?

If the next generation is going to be on the 3DS, then I don't see why not. They won't have the technical limitations of the previous consoles with the 3DS so they don't have any excuse. It could bring them a lot of new ideas for puzzles and dungeon crawling too. Encountering Pokemon should be done the same way like in the previous games even with this feature.

I'm not sure. On one hand it is a remain of the old school RPGs... But I agree that it gets really silly when you have detailed 3D enviroments.

Black and White could've done better without one, I think. Also diagonal sprites.

Of course this also brings up new problems. You could get overwhelmed by wild pokémon if they don't do something about the way encounters work, for example.
But overall it'd be beneficial. Probably adding a freer camera with it would make it even better too.

I don't see why they can't get rid of it when the spin-offs don't have it. At least I know Ranger and the Mystery Dungeon Games don't have the tile system. I've wanted them to trash it for a while now.

I think now that we've got a portable with a built-in analog stick in the primary control position (using the d-pad on the 3Ds is pretty awkward), I think we may see a non-tile based system to take advantage of that, perhaps one where pressure influences how fast you walk and, likewise, how often you encounter Pokemon...slower walking would equal less encounters.

Well, I like the way it is now.
They need only to improve the quality of sprites and of the "tiles".

If they change things so much, Pokémon will not be the same... to me. =/

I actually don't see why this is necessary. Yeah, it'll look nicer, but how you travel in Pokemon doesn't really affect anything- all the action happens in cutscene-type things. Maybe they could add diagonal walking like in the MD games, but they don't really need more than that.

I agree with Mantiz, it wouldn't feel like a main-game Pokemon if I could run wherever I wanted to. D8 Plus how would wild Pokemon encounters work? It's better now, and much simpler, the way it is now.
Signature is a WIP for the moment.
For now, I have claimed: Mewtwo, Member's Card, Wide Lens, Honey Gather, and Psystrike.

Meh, this isn't exactly a revolutionary gameplay change. I don't see the point in retaining the tile system just because every game so far has had it, such a trivial thing is hardly definitive of the series. The only real change would be smoother turning and better meshing with the new camera perspectives used in Black and White, which doesn't really affect the main gameplay elements at all.

They should use the tile system in Pokemon TCG to GB. I remember you can run in 8 directions. I've always wondered why you can't do that in the other games, since it's still tiles.

Or why not use the Civilization V style of Tiles:

Top game series: Pokémon, Mass Effect, Mario, Sonic, Batman Arkham, Ace Combat, Forza, GTA, Sly Cooper, etc

Nah, the tile system's worked fine for all 5 generations, so retaining it in the 6th won't pose any problem. Sure, it may have its limitations, but it definitely retains Pokemon's "old-school gaming" feel, something a lot of games are going back to. just check out the games out there who make their graphics pixelized, blocky, or 2D on purpose. It just goes to show that an old system doesn't always mean an obsolete one.

Also, keeping the tile system, which obviously eats up a lot less memory, will give the game cart a lot of extra space for additional features to enhance the gameplay. Let's face it: Most of us still play Pokemon despite its dated look not for the graphics, but for its gameplay. The best games don't necessarily have nor need the best graphics.

Need Pokemon of no specific gender, nature, moveset, and/or coloration? From Gen I to V, if it's obtainable by breeding, I can get it for you. Just PM me here.

It would've surprised me if they did this in Diamond and Pearl. It doesn't matter to me either way now, though. Literally, will not affect how I view the next generation at all.

I don't really care all that much. It would be interesting because it gives more options for new area designs, and more detailed regions. But, I don't think the current style detracts from the games at all.

No thanks. It could be changed, seeing as Gen VI will be for the 3DS, and the tile system doesn't work that well with the analog stick, but they just have to make walking a little smoother. I don't think walking diagonally would fit into Pokemon that well anyway.
