Thread: To Repel or not to Repel, That is the Question

Default To Repel or not to Repel, That is the Question

Now i'm sure we're all guilty of using repel when you simply cannot be bothered with wild pokémon. But do you ever consider what you are missing out on by using repel. By encountering less wild pokemon you are obviously going to encounter less shiny pokemon and are less likely to get the pokérus.

This came to my attention the other day as i was training a few pokemon and i thought to myself "I've been encountering a lot of wild pokémon, statistically i should find a shiny soon i reckon." BAM!! My next pokémon was a shiny, it was a hoothoot, but it was shiny none the less.

So has this thread changed your opinion on using repel? I personally now only use repel in caves and while surfing as i don't think i'll be too bothered if i miss out on a shiny zubat, or a shiny magikarp.

I use repels when I want to get somewhere fast without getting caught up in a wild battle every 3 seconds, but repels can be useful a lot of the time, like using repels to find roamers like the Johto legendary beasts or Latios/Latias. Or using the repel trick to only encounter one specific pokemon for shiny hunts.

But yes, sometimes I do feel like I'm missing out. I usually find shinies only if I'm looking for them. And as for Pokerus, the 2nd day of owning my HeartGold game, I went to the Pokemon Center in Azelea Town to heal up after I defeated Team Rocket in the Slowpoke Well, and she told my that my pokemon had pokerus. it was so early in the game i wasn't going to bother wasting my money on repels at that point, so that's probably why I got it.

Both shinies and pokerus are extremely rare, and I usually don't go out purposely trying to look for them. I like to just let things happen the way it was meant to be.

Oh, but I hate going through Mt. Silver, so I always use repels there

I do not use Repels at all pretty much unless Im either chaining or trying to find Pokemon in shaking grass in B/W or trying to find a Roaming Legendary. I like running into Pokemon because there's always a chance I'll find a shiny even if a very small chance. Plus I don't really mind encountering Pokemon, sometimes I catch them for my Pokedex or breeding or just encounter them to level grind, so I don't need Repels much.

I only use repels if I'm in a hurry get somewhere so I can save in a town and turn off my game, or if I'm just feeling incredibly lazy. Honestly, I've probably only used maybe 10 repels in all my years of playing Pokemon.

I honestly only use repels in caves and mountains. Like, I use them primarily in Twist Mountain when I want to get a fossil.

I use repels so I won't have to see those faces of the pokemon in caves very long.

I don't use repels because know that I have a very small probability of encountering a shiny Pokémon.

I only use them if I'm chaining on Pearl or I'm trying to get a items from dust clouds in caves in Black. But other than that, I don't use them; I ran into a shiny Zubat on Platinum by accident and it wouldn't have happened if I had used a Repel. So I only use them sparingly if at all.

I only use repels post games. Mostly because I can't be bothered with catching other Pokémon once I've finished the game...

I only use them later in the games after my pokemon won't be helped by the wild pokemon and I don't want to be bothered, especially when I'm somewhere with a lot of trainers and no easy healing access.

I only use repels when I'm on the way to a Legendary Pokemon / boss fight (Red or Steven) in a cave, as I want to save up all of my HP and PP. Otherwise, I will only use them for catching roaming Pokemon.

The only time I can remember using Repels was when I was replaying my Pokemon Yellow recently. I was going through Victory Road, which consists of a lot of Strength boulder moving. The animation is sooo slow, and with Zubat and Globat harrassing me every five steps, it was beyond frustrating. I didn't even care that I was slightly under-leveled when I reached the E4. xD

I try not to use repels, but sometimes, I can't help. Not using repels got me 2 shines and Pokérus. But repels help me get to the area faster.

A thousand times YES, especially since the new, automatic Repel feature was introduced in B2/W2.

I don't personally care as much about shiny Pokémon as others and I can get Pokerus from a friend, so it's really not a big deal.
