That's exactly what I did.

Maybe it's just that the majority of people haven't played through DP enough yet to warrant going into the GTS. I know if I were playing the game right now, devoting the majority of my free time to it, that I'd still only be at about the fourth gym. Mostly because I don't have that much free time. :-) But anyway, I don't plan on doing much GTS trading until I actually have some good stuff to trade and have played through the game with what I can get in-game (per tradition).
Interesting thoughts about game sales. I mostly agree with Doctor Oak. I thought that Sapphire sold more copies than Ruby, though? Personally, I think it has a lot more to do with the character on the front of the box--all five people I know in real life (including myself) who play Pokemon bought Sapphire. We liked Kyogre better than Groudon, simple as that.
That's how I've bought all my games. I first bought Yellow after doing research and finding that it was the most recent, updated version--and because I'd seen Pikachu in the show. I then bought Red because I liked Charizard. I went so far as to import Japanese Silver because I was already head over heels in love with Lugia (and still am). Sapphire I got for Kyogre, as already mentioned. I bought FireRed out of nostalgia, for Charizard, and because one of my other friends reallyreally likes green and was definitely getting Leaf. ^_^
As for Diamond/Pearl, I'm going for Diamond in English. My sentiments mirror McGraw's when it comes to Dialga vs. Palkia. o___O But my decision to go for Diamond also has to do with the fact that you can only catch Murkrow/Donkarasu in said game, and that I hold the name Diamond very dear to my heart (may she rest in peace).
I'm also a fan of the colour green. Leaf Green and Emerald were always going to be purchases :)
I went with Sapphire because it was the closest colour to green, and also because I preferred Sableye to Mawile and Kyogre to Groudon. After the initial release, I think Sapphire gained popularity once it was realised that Kyogre was the gun legend for the generation.
I tend to go with the less popular option by reflex - spread the love. But a 10% "outselling" isn't significant. At the moment pretty much every copy in Japan is being sold, and if they're out of Diamond, the punters are happy to take Pearl instead.
It's interesting that this time round the "blue" option is listed first and the "red" one second (well... pinkish, anyway), for the first time ever. But in terms of "masculine"/"feminine" it's still the same.
If you haven't seen the Pokemon, you can't request it at the GTS - so you can't ask for unobtainables etc. The only way you'll be able to get those is through friend code trading.
Except the order doesn't "sound" as good as Diamond and Pearl, Red and Green, ect.
I think it's because of the order yes, but Dialga definetely looks better, but it's probably my color liking coming in to play. Has anyone heard Palia's cry? Blech. That's a minor reason why I hate Palkia.
Also, Diamond sort of keeps in line with the other gems/metals Gold, Emerald, ect. Pearl is a new step in naming Pokemon games, so I guess that subconciously, people want to stick with the current theme of titles.
You can't get event legends through Wi-fi? Darn, and friend codes would be really hard since I have only one friend who likes Pokemon...
Just my two cents.
I got Red because my best friend at the time already had Blue.
I got Gold because everyone else I talked to was getting Silver.
I chose to play Ruby first because it's my birthstone.
This time I'm basing my decision to go with Diamond on the version exclusives. There are more in Diamond that I want.
I've got Yellow [my brother got Red, but I played it heaps], Gold, Crystal, Sapphire, Fire Red and Pearl [I'm getting English Diamond].
My brother got Silver, Crystal and Ruby as well... so we were fine with version exclusives :P But he's not into Pokemon anymore which is sad.
I wonder what the consequences, if any, are of trading with someone who's exploited a glitch to get a Pokémon...
