What would be your opinion on it and which would you use?

So like as an example, your water type just died to a grass type, so you send out a fire type but as they knocked out your Pokemon, they get to switch before your switch and you can't do anything. They switch to a water type and thus, they have the advantage again.

I think that would be fair and would make me a little more alright with people using shift when playing.

It sounds like a perfectly reasonable idea to me.

I've always kinda wondered why the default setting for Pokemon games is "Shift" -- multiplayer battles use the Set rules anyway (and I think Colosseum/XD did too).

(No wonder Pokemon nicknames are so difficult to think up.)

A set battle would be a lot less tactical than a shift battle. Just try to do as much damage as possible in the shortest possible amount of time.

Shift would make things more difficult, similar to the difficulty of Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2 during the later rounds. It does seem to exist to an extent, since I've seen a few opponents do a switch at some point in Pokemon X and Y. To have it commonly used by the opponent would be an interesting twist to the main games.

I've wondered that too, but not sure it's a good idea. I know it would make it extremely difficult and potentially too frustrating to be fun for younger children, especially when they get farther in the game. I doubt there are people who have never had any problems with the main villain, a specific gym, or the E4 and champion, even if they go into the battles knowing exactly what Pokemon the opponent will have. A couple trainers that would be perfect examples of this are Cynthia and Ghetsis (his BW team). I'm not gonna lie, the first time I fought Ghetsis I thought it would be easy, then ended up getting swept in just a couple minutes. Took me by complete surprise since N was pretty easy to beat.

That's what convinces them to play on set and stop playing shift, the easy mode which would now be the hard mode.

Maybe, but since we're talking about NPC's using the shift style, it's totally different. Going from shift to set for players might be a step up, but switching NPC's to shift would be like creating an Impossible or Legendary mode. I know players who literally spend their lives immersed in the games would like that challenge, but they're really only a tiny percent of the overall fanbase.

Obviously, whether the NPCs have Set or Shift should be another option for the player. So you could have yourself on Set and opponents on Shift for the ultimate challenge!

Nuzlockes would be impossible, one 'mon dies and your opponent could just switch out to whatever your next one is.

I was watching a LP and noticed one genuine flaw with the Shift battle option: KO an opponent with a Hyper Beam (or similar) and you can switch out without having to wait for the recharge turn.

It would be interesting, but would only really be applicable in important battles (Villain, Champion, etc.), as random NPCs are usually easy to sweep.

Great idea! That should at least be an option to toggle on/off, it could add some extra challenge for those who're looking for it.
