If we take other medias, and even official arts, into consideration the towns are far bigger then depicted. Just like everything else, we only get basic depictions of them. We don't need to see anything anyway.

However I've always seen the home town as being exactly what it looks like. Four - six houses and your friends house being a few feet away.

I see the towns in the video games as significantly different from their anime counterparts. Especially the starting town.

Goldenrod City is still rather large, though.

I don't think the starting town is THAT small.

Maybe bigger area wise but I've always seen it as being really small population wise.

I compare some of the bigger cities to real life counterparts. For instance, I think of Goldenrod City as Pokemon's version of NYC and Lilycove City as it's San Jose.

I already said this once somewhere, but was ignored then, but the towns are an overworld. It's depicted smaller than it actually is.

Morgan, Cordelia and Severa are best family :3

According to the official game artwork the cities and towns are really that size.

At least in generation 3 and 4 artwork anyway.
