Default Is Gabaraisu a homage to SNL?

Seriously, when I first saw this thing, the word that popped into my head was 'candygram'.
But why would the Japanese pay homage to an American variety show?

I'm pretty sure Landsharks have been around pre-SNL....

I'm sure it was just out of coincidence, that is unless Sugimori had a thing for SNL in the 70s.

Honestly, that skit wouldn't have crossed my mind. I don't normally call relations across huge gaps
such as a game and a decades old skit. Things like that don't rationaly connect.

It might be a Transformers reference. There was a "Land Shark" guy there, a long time ago, IIRC, and Japan went wild over Transformers back in the 80's.

    Ash: Who is it?
    Gabaraisu: Misty!
Ash: Hey...are you a Land Shark?
    Gabaraisu: No, I'm May!
    Ash: Okay! Come on....AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Well they have been paying homage to Turtle Island (Naetle and evos) and Chuchus (Wobbuffet) from Zelda, and Lakitus (Altaria and to some extent, Swablu) from Mario.... Who shall they spoof next?

Uh, there's a lot of things with turtle islands. Watch Neverending Story sometime. Or perhaps read the myth about the world being made on the back of a turtle (I forget which culture the myth came from, some Native American culture I think).

The concept of a shark that burrows through sand instead of swimming through water doesn't seem to be exclusive to SNL.

I hope you're not suggesting that Super Mario Bros was the origin of the concept of having a creature covered in clouds, because that's just a silly claim. And Wobbuffet predates the Chuchu's introduction in Zelda by a year.

no... I think that Wikipedia article is wrong. I'm pretty sure the idea for land shark really broke off of some kind of sand shark legend.

However, Swalot seems to be a Pinata from Mario Sunshine. XD

Buoysel is the Beaver from Majora's Mask.
Pachirisu is Static from Animal Crossing.

Look at a Lakitu and and an Altaria and say that there isn't a difference.

Sorry about mixing up the introduction of Chuchus and Wobbuffets, but they do look VERY alike, down to the four roundly feet. Also, don't forget that the Keaton's Mask from LoZ: MM is a supposed spoof of Pikachu.

Wobbuffet was inspired by some comedian, wasn' he?

Keaton was introduced in Ocarina of time as a clear spoof of Pikachu, yes. But any character that just happens to look similar to another character is not necessarily based on said character.

And a Lakitu is a turtle on a cloud. Just because Altaria is based on a cloud does not mean it has turtle features.

I'm pretty sure the Keaton was based off a japanese ledgend, not Pikachu (although, it could of been both).

However, the boy wearing the mask looks like James 0.0

And as people have mentioned, Naetle looks very simmilar to a monster in Mario and Luigi, a Turtle with a Sprout on it's head.
