This is what will happen when Splash gets an effect:

I'm now getting a full team of Magikarps...

Nope. That would ruin the whole point of the move.

In all seriousness, I think the extra random damage caused in thr PMD series are just enough - flipping to a random spot and if there's a pokemon, you inflict and get 5 damage each

I think adding an effect would take the fun out of it! It was designed to be a completely pointless, useless, trollish move to make you think raising Magikarp is stupid. If they made it actually do something, it would defeat its original purpose.

There should be a worldwide event, where all the magikarps that ever used splash would cause a huge tsunami, and you'd have to fly up or surf the wave to escape. So, splash x (however many times it's been used)=a tsunami.
    Bring it on!

No. It's part of the reason why Magikarp is so awesome. Giving Splash an effect would effectively make Magikarp useless.

I don't quite think so. Yes, there are instance where a lesser-used move gets a nice effect later on, like Growl working on multiple targets and Growth now boosting both attack stats, but I agree that Splash may not have a secondary effect, ever, because that's the appeal of this move. It's famous for being a turn-waster, and that appeal's not going to change.

However, if there is an effect for this move, the most intriguing suggestion has to be "removes all hazards". I imagine that this would make Jumpluff a great user to remove hazards, and the odd Wobbuffet even has another role to play.

    Thanks for reading.

They generally never change a move that much, except from power and accuracy.

It should have 1 damage and a 1/3000 change in a OHKO with various ways to make the chance higher like Lucky Eggs and stuff.

No, it will never be any effect. Splash is a special move, any effect will remove its special taste.

When I first watched pokemon I thought you had to do something special to get splash to work, never did I think it was useless. I dont think it will ever be possible on the games but maybe something could be done on the anime...

But for the games, no way...

That used to bother me, too. I once thought it was so it couldn't ever be super-effective, but since an attack has to actually hit to be "super-effective" that explanation doesn't really make sense. (I wish it did say that with Splash, though. That would be hilarious!)

I think it's to underscore the fact that you don't need any sort of special power over water to just splash in it. Also, because there are several non-Water-types that learn it by leveling-up (like the Hoppip family, Spoink/Grumpig and Buneary/Lopunny), which isn't the case with most Water-type moves.

Perhaps make it deal damage in the rain.

Giving Splash an actuall effect would ruin it's purpose, as a useless RPG attack that's there to distract the player, many RPG's have enemies with such "attacks", especially the Mother games.

If splash ever gets an effect, then Magikarp will cease to be the most hilarious Pokemon. And we can't have that.

Of course not. The move is not meant to do anything. The entire purpose for Splash to begin with was so that Magikarp would be useless, but then be worth it in the end because of a Gyarados.
