It's a nice theory, but I'd argue that not every ditto was a mew. There may have been a few "fallen" mews that did the ditto thing, and now all modern dittos are the result of that. Of course you may get the occasional mew -> ditto, but I'd say it seems a bit less "out there" to say that most modern dittos come from other dittos by budding/butting (silly) with only a rare direct mew -> ditto ditto.

I've been thinking about this theory, too. It's pretty interesting, and there are some other points to connect: Mew can Transform and learn every other attack. Ditto can only Transform. Maybe when they lost their form, they lost this ability. Also, the RSE Pokedex states Ditto fails to transform into something if it relies on memory. Its memory might have to do something with it as well...

As I said, Ditto can also learn every move, it's just temporary until it transforms back. And memory may play a part if the Ditto has to figure out what goes where on the surface, but for the more complex matters such as organ placing and strength of it's skin, I say that's the DNA of every Pokémon at work (IF they are related).
i always just figured that Mew were the only species of pokemon alive, and thus started combining with or changing the animals around them, making the pokemon we know (and knew) today and then. and that only a select rare few liked being as they were.
This theory brings facts and makes a point. I agree with it.

This is a really interesting theory! This form chance also might have had something to do with Arceus and the other creator Pokemon. Perhaps when Arceus created the Pokemon world, he created Mew to make the different Pokemon species. Then Mew, made different Pokemon, and eventually, similar to God's reason for creating humans (according to the Bible), created Dittos to be a Pokemon that were similar to itself.
In the Bible, God wanted Humans to take care of the world, and Mew might have also had similar intentions. Dittos help take care of the Pokemon world by being able to breed with nearly all non-legendary Pokemon, and therefor keeping the population of Pokemon in high numbers. Since Mew is genderless, able to learn transform and can be taught any move in existence, Ditto was also genderless and able to transform, indirectly allowing him to learn any Pokemon move in existence. Ditto's even, less-powerful stats may been limits that Mew set so that Dittos wouldn't try to overthrow Mew and take his position in the Pokemon world.
This is pretty reasonable

Definitely does make a lot of sense that they are formless mews D:
@ShoesMcFace, While a nice try, that doesn't make a lot of sense. Even for some of the Christian sects in Japan, noting in Pokemon has ever derived from those concepts, instead they usually derive from either their own legends in Shinto myth, but also can have roots in other folklore.
But considering that Mew and Ditto are from Gen I and the fact that Arceus is from Gen IV, that whole idea is a really risky putting together. Anywho, like I said, that really doesn't make alot of sense considering Pokemon's origins.
