Thread: Surnames

That sounds reasonable, but what if there is more than one Satoshi from Masara Town? How would you differentiate people with the same first name who come from larger cities?

Wasn't that done with occupation and parents' names? So he may be "Hanako's son Satoshi, from Masara". And if there's more than one Hanako there with a son named Satoshi, he may be "Satoshi, from Masara, the son of Hanako the gardener"

I think they just left them out of the anime because it's easier to remember one name rather than two. They obviously have them, but in a show geared towards children, how often do you have characters with more than one name? Maybe it's more common in Japan, but just off the top of my head, I can't think of that many animes who have characters with more than one name. And certainly not the ones geared towards younger viewers. But maybe I'm just blocking stuff out.

Yu-Gi-Oh characters have last names.

Heh...I think Pocket Monster's target audience is slightly younger than Yu-gi-oh's.

In-game, I don't think the professors have *given* names, do they? Hmm, concievibly, say Special or somewhere wanted to give Ookido a given name, could they call him something other than Yukinari?

In game, we wouldn't be able to tell whether those were given or family names - they seem to have only one name.

Wouldn't 'Mr. Briney' technically be a surname? You wouldn't normally tack on a 'Mr.' if it was his first name, no matter how old he is.

I love how they give people first names but no last names or they give them last names but no first names. XD TF, please. TF. XD

I guess since it's their fantasy world, they have no problems, because they can just give everyone a different name :P

I got a random SMS from South Africa a couple of weeks ago (I live in Australia) asking me what Misty's last name was, because my friends were fighting about it XD

"Misty Williams" is a long ago proven fake. Same with whatever Brock's last name is supposed to be - Harrison or Henry or whatever.
