I would assume then that the game map would be a combination of real world and the anime maps then? Maybe maybe not?
As I said before, I suggest that the games and the anime should be treated as separate universes.

Exactly. I mean, the games actually reference places on Earth, so it's fairly safe to assume it looks like our world. However, in the anime, it's completely different, even going as far as having different continents. Even the characters are different.

Orre is based on Arizona. The Pokémon people said that themselves. But, I figured it fits nicely between Hoenn and Johto, anyhow. xD

Feel free to post suggestions in the PJ thread itself, so as not to get in the way here.
Actually, the correct phrase would something like this.

~Arizona was the inspiration for Orre (as said in Bulbapedia) However, that could very well be inaccurate~

Well, because Hoenn rotated looks like the area of Japan it's based on.

Kingmate, I'm not sure what you mean. In real-life, the area called "Kyushu", which looks like Hoenn, isn't orientated in the same way. When Nintendo made Hoenn, they rotated the real region 90 degrees counter-clockwise. However, since the map of PokéJapan is based on the country of Japan's actual geography, I rotated it back. Does that answer your question?

Not exactly sure what you mean, like NikNaks said.

For example. Let's say... You're in Rustboro City. It looks like this...

    -
    -

If Hoenn was at the same exact angle as Kyushu's... It would look like this...

    - -

So... All the doors to the buildings would face to the west, if Hoenn was to match Kyushu. Sorry if this is confusing to you, but I'm trying to help you.

They just rotated the map so it would fit on the GBA screen.

    No. That's not the reason.

Anyway, why did you quote me? I understand the rotation... It was designed to increase the playability of the region.

Quote from Bulbapedia that backs up what Gummy Spider said, "Junichi Masuda has stated that...the reasoning behind rotating Hoenn 90° counterclockwise compared to its real-world counterpart was to increase playability"

Default Fan Map - East Unova

I have a self-made map I’d like to share in the hopes that it helps make the Pokémon a little more “real” for people.

Having grown up in and around New York, I was extremely excited when it first became apparent that the Unova region was based on the New York City area.

At the same time, I'm disappointed and tantalized by the fact that Game Freak rather arbitrarily left out what could have been an extremely exciting section of the city that would have fit in well with the idea of people and Pokémon living together. Specifically I speak of the greater bay area East of Undella Town's sunken ruins, which in our world would be known as Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway Peninsula, which are definitely part of NYC and are even served by the subway system.

This area contains a 9000+ acre wildlife preserve that was formerly in the shadow of the Twin Towers. For having done research on NYC in preparation for making a Pokémon I'd consider that a pretty serious missed opportunity. (though I do admit my personal bias on the matter)

As seen here, the Bay and the Peninsula are in the south of the land mass where Accumula and Nuvema Towns would be in Unova. You can actually access a small portion of this bay in the game in the form of the Undella Underwater Ruins.

Ironically the way Game Freak altered the proportions of NYC to create Unova actually places more prominence on the bay area than would be found on an actual map of the city.

In fact, there’s a moment in Episode 1 of the anime where the animators, likely unwittingly, depicted a land mass corresponding to the Rockaway Peninsula in the background while Professor Juniper is driving Ash, his mother, and and Prof. Oak from the seaplane port to Nuvema Town.

I couldn’t put up with having my former home town being so absurdly geographically close to being included as part of the Pokémon World and just sit on my hands and not do anything about it.

So, I went and “fixed” GameFreak’s map for them, transporting Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway Peninsula into the Pokémon World as what I call East Unova, or Greater Undella Bay.

Below is an in depth “tour” of what I envisioned for the area and what it could have offered to Pokémon Black and White, or perhaps even an unreleased game. I use a number of photographs from the real-life locations for illustration purposes, that I’ll hide behind spoilers.

Undella Town would have a bridge heading Southeast over Undella Bay past the site of the Sunken Ruins to Crossbay Island which is host to the Pokémon Wildlife Sanctuary , where visitors can explore the park and rent a camera to take photographs of the Pokémon that can be judged in contests with rare items for prizes.

Continuing past the Wildlife Sanctuary on the other end of the island is Crossbay Town . This town Is crisscrossed by canals and piers with many houses being built high on stilts above the marshland.

Believe it or not the below photo was actually taken only a few feet away from the town’s subway station.

Access to the Peninsula is via yet another bridge. In our world they are two adjacent bridges, one for people and cars, and another for subway trains. In East Unova, there is just one bridge shared by people and Pokémon powered electric trolley cars, which connect the area’s four cities.

The Crossbay Bridge empiies out into beautiful Arverna City . Bright new new planned communities are interwoven with beaches and woods where regional Pokémon of many types dwell.

Arverna City’s Gym also serves as the local Library, but being somewhat out of the way for trainers traveling on foot and with only 8 badges being needed to enter Unova’s Pokémon League, this city is generally overlooked by trainers hailing from beyond the peninsula. Arverna being particularly internationally diverse, the gym specializes in the training of Pokémon from outside the Unova region.

(UPDATE: I wrote this before I actually played the games and was surprised to discover that Game Freak found the idea of a Gym Library neat as well and did exactly that in Nacrene City! If I were to rewrite this I'd make the local Supermarket the library. The recently Supermarket in the IRL arverne is actually one of the major landmarks in the city)

Arverna is better known for its Beach Boardwalk and adjacent public recreational areas with boccer fields, basketball courts and Pokémon battle arenas free for all to use. Migrating aquatic Pokémon from beyond Unova can often be seen resting on the jette rocks on the beach.

North of Arverna City is Seagrit, which is primarily a mix of big city, suburban, and beach scenery. It is home to a street fair selling many home-made items, traditional medicines, and seasonal produce. Along the cost of the bay to the north is the Ecology Center where Unova’s reusable and recycleble refuse is processed into new products with the help of Pokémon. The East Unova Ecology Center sadly has no real life parallel. The actual site in Jamaica Bay is home to a very ugly oil dock.

A Forlorn Playland Can be found along the route west from Arverna City. Long ago Playland Park attracted visitors from across the bay in Central Unova, but now only wild Pokémon play amongst the decaying remains as the park slowly returns to nature.

Tepig Island is just off the east coast of the Peninsula between Arverna City and Seclusa Town. Once home to a casino resort, it was completely destroyed a century ago in a storm said to be caused by Zekrom. The island has been rebuilt with the help of Pokémon and is now host to a legitimate arcade where prizes can be purchased with tickets earned by winning games.

Heading south, one can see the bridge which connects the southern end of the Peninsula to Central Unova. Directly beneath the bridge, the real life counterpart to Nuvema Town can be seen.

Battery Beach on the tip of the peninsula beyond Seclusa Town is named for the batteries of the former fortress there. This serene beach has become a park where Pokémon and Trainers alike are abundant.

Seclusa Town is a small, exclusive community of bungalows on the end of the peninsula. Outsiders passing through can buy high-end, rare Pokémon related novelty items from the town emporium, but otherwise are not welcome. Even the local Pokémon Center is reserved for residents only.

Finally we leave return to Central Unova via the Azure Bridge , a vertical lift drawbridge connecting Seclusa Town with Accumula Town. This bridge fits perfectly with Unova’s many other landmark bridges. The scrolls adorning the two elevator towers gives the bridge a whimsical appearance.

The real bridge takes the road from the Peninsula directly past what anime viewers might recognize as Nuvema Seaplane Base where Ash’s seaplane arrived in Unova.

The actual road serviced by the bridge follows the same route Prof. Juniper would have used to drive Ash from the airport to Nuvema Town, which would be on the southern tip of Brooklyn.

Thusly, a glimpse of the East Unova peninsula can actually be observed in the anime as demonstrated HERE .

So that concludes my tour of my personal neck of the Pokémon world. Thank you.

Wow! That is amazing! (I cut off the rest of your post because I didn't want to make another mile long post!

I'm guessing the reason why GameFreak cut off that peninsula is because of these reasons:

    1. It is outside of the map. Yeah, it would look funny if it was, but all of Unova looks exaggerated.
    2. Cut it off, because of the way the peninsula slants.

So, Yeah. Really nice analysis. I really enjoyed, props to you for making a nice post! :]

Coincidentally, I started this map of "Greater Unova" about a month ago using NikNaks map as a base but I never finished it. The city in the very northern area of the map is supposed to roughly represent the location of Stamford, CT. Connecticut is my home state so I always wanted to make a region based on it.

That's cool! However, it is a little off. The Pokemon League is actually on the mainland. That river is actually in between the Pokemon League and Souryuu/Opelucid City. You can see it on the official art of Unova. :]

Other than that, I don't notice anything off. It's good. :]
