    Default Move-of-the-Week Discussion #43: Recover

In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Recover is chosen.

Restoring its own cells, the user restores its own HP by half of its max HP.
Not every move in Generation 1 started out as either an attack or a status move that harms the opponent. There were moves that benefit the user, and you can bet recovery is one of these. Sleep Talk wasn't invented back then, which means that if a Pokémon was blessed with a recovery move, they are better off since they don't have to use up two turns doing nothing. Recover is also one of the few moves that received a downgrade, which is uncommon for any move, as it had twice the PP before Generation 4, which does help in reducing a battle's length. Asides that, users who learn this move have some sort of ability to regenerate self either because its inspired species regenerates faster than an average animal or have the ability to muster the energy to quicken the process of healing.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
    • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move?
    • What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
    • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
    • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
    • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
    • Why is the recovery always half of the user's full strength, instead of more/less?
    • There is an ability that deals with self-regeneration as well, known as Regenerator. Very few learners have both this ability and this move. What differences do both have that set them apart?

Here are the current users of this move (put in Spoiler tag due to the large list):

Thanks for reading, and happy discussing!

    Previous Move-of-the-Weeks:

For every four weeks, users get to vote for the next Move-of-the-Week. To narrow down the selection of potential moves, a criteria for the next move would be placed. If you want to vote, at least contribute to the topic in hand (because this topic is about the current move, not about voting for the next move). If you posted just to vote, your vote won't be considered.

Criterion for next move: A Move that Wobbuffet could use:

    • Counter
    • Mirror Coat
    • Safeguard
    • Destiny Bond
    • Splash
    • Charm
    • Encore
    • Tickle
    • Struggle

How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move?

Let us take Psychic Pokemon for this account. If a Psychic Pokemon uses Recover, the Pokemon would flow its special powers to heal its wounds and to revitalize its energy, and therefore, healing its health.

    EDIT: My vote is Safeguard

It works well with bulky pokemon and walls, stalls. I find it less than useful when I can easily reach for potions.
As for battles like the PWT or Battle Subway, I still don't use Recover when a held Sitrus berry can suffice.

Whoops. I must be thinking of Sleep Talk, so I updated the Original Post with this information. Why not provide your own viewpoints on this move while you are at it?

    Thanks for reading.
