Mind being a bit more specific, please? I keep sifting through the list of Gen I Pokemon in my mind and I can't really seem to think of any that could qualify as overrated (besides Charizard). Most are underrated, I believe. Or rated just enough.

Definitely true. Arceus may seem impossible to defeat, but it's stats aren't beyond amazing.
That's my opinion also. "PIKAAA-CH-" :mud-slap: Foe Pikachu has fainted! =P
Pikachu is popular because it's cute, because it's in every episode of the anime and commonly used in marketing, so even non-Pokémon fans have seen it, maybe at a store they walked past and because of their ignorance are completely oblivious of the other 648 species of Pokémon. Envoy's argument was good, but it first requires that you know more about Pokémon than "I like the yellow cat thing!" (it's supposed to be a mouse!)
I used to love Xatu until I realized it couldn't crap against a Dark-type, and Noctowl with no strength against Ice or Rock, and Jumpluff ='(

Eh... out of the ones not mentioned on this thread...
I'd say Mijumaru.
Sure, I do like it, but so does everyone else. I won't even repeat myself at explaining why it is so popular; the quote system is there for something.
For each their own, I guess.

I agree with that. I guess people love him so much because:
1-It'sthe final evolution of a starter;
2-It's dragon-like, and most people think like that:dragons=tough animals;
3-It represents fire, which represents offense...which is what most people want;
4-It appears like a tough guy in the anime, and...
5-It looks awesome.

In the same vein as Charizard, I'm gonna say Mewtwo. It's "big and bad" like Charizard and often receives similar praise. Additionally, it has had his own movie (two in fact), and was the single most overpowered poke in Red/Blue/Yellow, resulting in words like "cool" and "awesome" being used way too liberally around it. To me, it's just plain ugly.
Isn't Smugleaf more popular though? Are you perhaps saying that Smugleaf is more deserving of the attention than Mijumaru? Just wondering (and I don't necessarily disagree).
And for those of you saying Garchomp is overrated (competitively) and shouldn't have been Uber'd, you'd better explain yourself. Because "just no" is the response I want to give to that.
Not saying that. I'd say they're both equally popular (though most recent pools show Miju on the lead). I just found it to be a most interesting case of "hypeness", because Smugleaf was hyped since the beginning, while Miju's popularity appeared out of the blue... well, not per se like I try to prove on my post, but you catch the drift ;)
I agree though... Smugleaf line isn't that good, but it looks cool, it is hyped. Most grass types don't look offensive / arrogant, and most of the fanbase are young boys... and those love offensive, hence why fire type is so popular. Grass types aren't popular because they aren't offensive by nature... and there goes another statement against the ones like Charizard.![]()
Mewtwo always reminded me of the Dragon Ball characters, especially Frieza who I thought he was a rip off of and I'm not convinced that he isn't. Ugly to you maybe, but definitely a good member of a Poké team.
Ask and you shall recieve.
Too many things outpace non-Scarfed Garchomp, and a lot of those things, such as Weavile and Starmie, pack Ice-type attacks that can slaughter it. Even worse, the big land shark has no Dragon Dance to fix its oh-so-beatable Speed.
Sure, it plays well in Sandstorm, and it can take practically anything that isn't Ice-type, but the Speed is a big issue. Not to mention the fact that its Special Atack is subpar, meaning that it's easily walled (and phazed) by Skarmory, which its Fire Blasts won't be one-hitting anytime soon. I promise you, when Smogon develops a metagame for Black and White, Chomp will stay OU.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying here and I agree. Mijumaru got that "so bad (sad) it's good" hype train riding behind it and you could say it got out of hand, while at least Smugleaf has stayed constant. Good catch at picking Mijumaru out as overrated.
Well, I don't know about Freeza, but in regards to the second part of your post, Mewtwo is only really spectacular in Gen 1 (where he was an overpowered monster) and Gen 2 (mostly because Lugia was really the only other great Uber at this point). As of Gen 4, he's good for sure, but he's not God tier like Kyogre, Arceus, or even Giratina-O. But yeah, not trying to start an argument, he definitely is still really useful.
The thing is, Garchomp often does wear a scarf to function as an excellent revenge killer, turning it's "oh-so-beatable" speed into troll speed that seriously maims the base 100s. If Swords Dance is what you want, Garchomp will often use a Yache Berry to survive ice attacks and kill. As for Skarmory, I know fire fang 2HKOs it but I can't run any calculations now because I need to go to class. So sorry I couldn't give more, but you could consider this to be the foundation of why Chomp is so good.
Oh, and for Gen 5, with that power creep I can see it in OU, but from what the Gen 5 playtesters have been saying, it's still really good.
