So I'm writing a fic set 30 some-odd years after the anime and wondered: how long can pokemon live? What are your thoughts on it?
According to the anime, preeetty long.
Much longer than the animals they're based off of, anyways.
Like, there was that one guy with the pikachu Pooka? Must've been as old as he was, a good 60-80 or so years.
Then there was that 200 year old ninetales as well.
Who knows, maybe depending on the species they can live anywhere from 50 to hundreds of years old.
Well I think it can vary between species by a great amount.
For example, Pokemon with a high metabolism (like say Ninjask) might last say 1-4 years, while Pokemon with slow metabolism (example being Torkoal) would last for 80-100 at best. But theres also the consideration of artificial Pokemon like Voltorb and Porygon who can technically never age due to being man made, or Ghost types that are often mentioned to be desist spirits and there for cannot age further.
The age of Legendaries can also vary, such as Reshiram or Groudon being presumingly immoral, but more minor legends like Entei and Aricuno can potentially reproduce and possibly die of old age like any other common Pokemon.
In the process of writing a fic set in the future myself, I had a few problems with this so I'll tell you what I did.
In the fic I have Pikachu (yes, Pikachu) as a reasonably aged pokemon; about 40 - 50; and Ash is around the same age. So I had the idea of pokemon aging at the same rate humans do. Of course there are some exceptions - for example, Ghost types are either age really slowly or not at all. I also have the principle of legendaries being immortal.
The greatest part about this theory is that it all of it ties in with the anime since Ash doesn't age or is never seen aging so the same could be said of pokemon.
And also, Rip Van Winkle, that Ninetales was a ghost.
I extend my hand to the marvelous authors of this forum. I have read your works and I know that your imagination knows no bounds. Can you help me create a region? I will dedicate the series of fics I intend to use this region for to the gracious people who choose to help me on this audacious task.
So Im asking you once again Bulbagarden - can you help me?
Bug Pokemon, 5 months - 4 years.
Regions Early On Rodents at first evolution: 1 - 5 years, second evolution, say, maybe 1-6. It depends on whether they get ill or not.
Starter Pokemon: Maybe 6 - 40 years, give or take a few.
As somebody stated before me, Pokemon with slow metabolism will last longer.
Legendary Pokemon with the possibility of reproduction might live from 30 - 450 years, where as legendary dragons and supposed pokemon 'gods' are immortal, especially Palkia, Dialga and Giritina as they were the first pokemon apart from Arceus, and obviously do not create substitutes, so yes, some would be immortal. Pokemon like Pikachu would live into moderate 30s, but would certainly be showing signs of aging. Remember Puka from that episode in the original series of the anime? He was shown to be around 20 but was certainly showing a great deal of aging already, so yes, I would say pokemon like Pikachu would live to be around 30-ish. So all the electric rodents included. Final evolutions last longer than about 10 or so years then their earlier evolution, as they have the maturity and the capable immune system to do so. And then of course it depends on the bond with their trainer, as if they like their trainer, they will strive to stay on this earth longer, so depending on the pokemon and the trainers friendship they could last from anything to the estimates I have said before, to one-hundred years.
Thanks for reading my theory ~ Alien
I'd agree that ghosts live forever, bugs probably won't live the longest, and I think that the metabolism thing is a good idea.
I'm also planning a pearlshipping fic where Ash and Dawn are in their 30s, and I was thinking maybe Pikachu should still be alive? I'm not entirely sure. It's almost not Ash without Pikachu!
You Might Be A Redneck If...
You think The Nutcracker is something you did off the high dive.
You've ever smuggled food out of an all-you-can-eat buffet.
The original color of your carpet is an unsolved mystery.
You've had more court dates than second dates.
The closest you've come to royalty is eating at Burger King.
You've ever stared at a carton of orange juice because it said "concentrate."
You think a quarterhorse is that ride in front of K-Mart.
It's said Onix's body become hard as steel past 100 years old. So, wild Steelix (from Iron Island or Victory Road) should be older.
I don't think Bug Pokémon live as short as real Bug Pokémon. That would be impractical for Bug-specialized trainers (Aaron, Bugsy, Arti) who would have to start from zero all the time. Same for rodents; at least Red keeps his Pikachu in Johto games.
Anyway, trainer's Pokémon must live way longer than wild Pokémon.

- Pokémon games are like boobs; designed for children, but more enjoyed by adults. (Someone on twitter)
I think it pretty much differs from species to species.
A pokemon handbook that I have states about Ninetales:
"with a life-span of a thousand years, it's nine tails are said to contain mystic power."
And also about Wartortle:
"It can live for almost ten-thousand years, and a symbol of it's longevity would be the furry tail it sports."

Well, if you look at the pokedex entries, some of them have specified lifespans. However, I think they can survive in pokeballs or pokeball-type objects indefinitely, judging by numerous instances from the anime.
I'm pretty sure they age though, like that surfing pikachu we saw in the original series. That one looked pretty old.
Sorry about my last post, the 'Weaker' bug pokemon, Caterpie, Weedle, Metapod, Kakuna etc. Certainly not powerful battlers such as Volcarona and Scizor, and all trainer owned pokemon have a stronger bond, so they want to stay alive for their trainer, such as Aaron's Pokemon. You never really see an insect age, so you can't really tell how old it is. Pokemon in the ground egg group and the human-shape egg group show a more noticable sign of aging. Like Puka from the Pi-kahuna episode. Grass pokemon are more shown to 'wither' or just shrivel up. Excuse me for my statements on bug pokemon. And I mean the rodents as in the normal type ones you encounter quite early on in game (Ratatta, Sentret, Zigzagoon, Bidoof and Patrat)
Pokemon life expectancy varies amongst the species. The weak common pokemon have rather short lives of less than a decade. Some Pikachu can live as long as human. Ninetails can potentially live 1000 years if the legends are believed. And there can be individuals who live un-naturally long lives.
Pokemon are immortal. D8 The only way they die is by being killed! ...at least in my story. LOLS.
But in games and such, I guess it varies from Pokemon to Pokemon. D8 I also think evolved Pokemon might live longer than non-evolved Pokemon. Pokemon that don't evolve, legendaries, and babies are obviously exceptions.
Signature is a WIP for the moment.
For now, I have claimed: Mewtwo, Member's Card, Wide Lens, Honey Gather, and Psystrike.
