Thread: Do you ever notice little design changes?

Between the games, between the continuities, etc.

Like for example, the way certain Pokemon look different between the games and other continuities. Meowth and Pikachu look very different in the games, as of the third gen. I prefer their game ones by far

    Or those little sprite changes.

It's hard to see, but Art Evolution is still in place.

As an artist myself, subtle differences in art styles never escape my eye. I can definitely detect evolutions in styles, particularly in the work of Ken Sugimori. His style's development from simple designs and blotchy watercolors to realistic body shapes and bold colors was a gradual one, but you look at the art for HeartGold and SoulSilver and compare it to the art from Red and Green and it's like night and day.

The lighting coming from cave exits/entrances is slightly different between HG/SS and D/P/PT.

Yeah, sometimes. I have a thing about always getting excited when new sprites come out to see if Poliwhirl still has no fingers. XD

A lot of people say that Pikachu has changed a lot over the years, but as someone who's been drawing the same monsters since she was ten, I really don't think it's changed that much. The design is still very much the same, and the basic shapes are still there.

Also, Rhydon's first appearence in the Capsule Monsters alpha was way different. He was a lot simpler.

    Yes, considering this (the Pikachu):

    went to this:

You have to wonder why he's lost the fluffiness and became more lanky.

I think it's because Electric-types are more speed-based. Basically, it means that it's faster, and they wanted to display it. Personally, I think they should make it chubbier/cuter again. It was both phat and pimp in its original iteriation.

He went on a special diet that involves eating only Light Balls for many years, duh.

Anyways, no, I don't ever really notice little changes.

That's not exactly a "little" design change. Plus it's a mouse.

    I meant this:

    And this:

    ..And some of this:

The games have a more round and less anthropomorphic design.

I hate it when they change what they said about previous Pokemon in their dex entries. Like Ivysaur's entry in Red clearly said that it lost the ability to stand on its hind legs after evolution, even though the sprite shows Ivysaur standing. Wtfmonkeys?

Pikachu got slimmer in the anime. In the original, he had much less neck than he does now.

There are also the changes in sound effects, some of which are more drastic than others. For example, the "select move" SE in B&W is so loud that it echoes. Before this, it was just a plain sound.

They also changed the "advance text" SE to what it was in Gen.3. I don't blame them - I liked that one better compared to the one in DP.

Also, they changed all the number fonts this time around - DP and HGSS still used the ones from way back in Red and Blue (actually, even the Japanese RSE used them, but for some reason, the NA ones didn't) and BW has finally changed this.

Fourthly, the progression of a battle in DPPt was slow as hell. They'd delay the scene by a whole 1 second before playing the congratulatory music after the last Pokemon fainted.
The word "quadragonal" is the only word with "dragon" in it where "dragon" is not a root word. That makes it awesome.

I notice numerous different Pokemon design changes. For example, you have Charmander's little spike on its back, Poliwhirl going from mittens to gloves between the generations,Caterpie used to have more feet, Zapdos' talons, Meditite's kneespots in R/S...I could go on forever. To be fair, R/B/G were the first games, so obviously all the designs have changed significantly since then. Pikachu is one obvious example of this.
