Ah, that's great! Thanks! ::screencaps:: It kinda makes me want to see people play with them more... but not so much to be annoying, you know?

I haven't seen that DP ep, so I'll have to find it and watch it. Actually, I don't remember seeing many DP episodes, save for the TR disbanding one; did I miss many cute moments? Any clips I have to seek out? You keep speaking of Musashi maturing in the later DP eps, but I didn't see them...

@fruitsmoothierevenge; You've barely seen any DP?! You need to change that ASAP. The first haf was bleh in terms of shipping, (and was downright anti-shippy at points) but the second half was amazing. I'll run down the best episodes and summarize the character growth. Back in 2010 I wrote a blog summarizing Musashi's contests in DP. I'll include parts of that, and add more Rocketshipping parts in too. I'll spoiler it for length.

DP011: Hikari! Contest Debut!! - The debut of Candy Musalina! Things go well enough, but Kojiro and Nyasu focus on selling fake seals and don't even see her first appeal! After that they act very AG like, being Musashi's servants more than her friends.

DP026: Pokemon Contest! The Sono'o Convention!! - Things go from bad to worse. Musashi goes to get her nails done so SHE can look nice in the Contest, and orders Kojiro and Nyasu to steal new Pokemon for her. When they fail she just yells at them.

DP027: "Decisive Battle! Potchama vs. Pottaishi!!" - After Musashi loses she yells at Kojiro and Nyasu and the two of them just kind of sigh at her.

DP049: Pokemon Contest! The Yosuga Convention!! - The crap really hits the fan in this one. Musashi says Habunake and Dokucale aren't good enough, so she wants to use Manene instead. To top it off, Kojiro is very upset by this, Musashi yells, and Kojro and Nyasu look at her with terror.

DP055: This is where DP finally started turning around for Rocketshipping. Kojiro is depressed over losing Sabonea, and Musashi comes up with a plan to cheer him up. I uploaded a short video on my site here. Lots of cute stuff in this one. After this one Musashi starts treating Kojiro and Nyasu better, but the other two take a little longer to come around.

DP061: "Pokemon Contest! The Zui Convention!!" - Musashi is going back to her old habits and wants Kojiro and Nyasu to fix the Contest so she can win, causing Kojiro and Nyasu to freak out because they never did fix it. However, in a huge surprise to everyone, Musashi manages to win the ribbon on her own!

DP077: "Everyone's a Rival! The Mikuri Cup!!" - Musashi learns she won the pervious Contest all on her own and gets very full of herself. She bombs in the appeal round very badly. Kojiro and Nyasu continue to act very fearful of her. They also don't seem to care much when she loses.

DP095 - "Pokemon Contest! The Kan'nagi Convention!!" - Musashi takes a different approach in this one and decides to copy the gym leader Melissa by dressing as her. She acts very conceited as she waits for the results, as she has Kojiro give her a neck massage wile she drinks some beverage from a martini glass. She once again fails to make it pass the appeal round.

DP102: "The Yosuga Gym Match! (Satoshi) vs. Melissa!!" - We saw very little of this Contest, but Musashi is able to win her second ribbon. She goes "back to basics" and doesn't try to copy anyone and instead just acts like herself. (Something Kojiro said she should do in another episode.) At the beginning of the episode Kojiro and Nyasu still aren't very supportive of her. (Kojiro says something about how she really likes to go at her own pace) However, before her appeal Kojiro cheers her on and accidentally uses her real name before correcting himself, just as he did in the Summer School episodes.

DP114: "Pokemon Contest! The Akebi Convention!!" - Musashi continues from last time and uses Megayanma once again. During the appeal she comments to Megayanma how gorgeous Megayanma is. Kojiro and Nyasu are starting to be much more supportive of her. After Musashi passes the appeal round, they happily hold hands and say that their cheering must have worked. In a surprising move, Musashi also smiles at Hikari's appeal.

DP117: Including here for completest sake. Also to note how things changed after this episode.

DP123: "Pokemon Contest - The Tatsunami Convention!!" - Musashi successfully figures out how to get inspiration from someone, and uses Urara's power up technique to have Manene perform a fun appeal. What's more important is that Kojiro happily lets Musashi use Manene and even says her third ribbon is counting on it. In the stands Kojiro, Nyasu, and Sonansu, wear their old ouendan outfits in support of Musashi. When the appeal starts, Musashi no longer waves to the audience when she comes out. After she passes the appeal round she doesn't even see the flowers Nyasu has for her, and instead she (and Kojiro) praise Manene for being a genius.

DP146: "Pokemon Contest! The Suiren Convention!!" I don't like this episode very much, but it is important in terms of Rocketshipping and Jeska will end up bringing it up anyway. In this one we get some great moments at the beginning with Kojiro taking care of Musashi (see pics here). The ending with the hug is also cute. But it's the middle where things get interesting. Since Musashi is sick she asks Kojiro to pretend to be Candy Musalina and win her third ribbon. He's very much against it and Nyasu has to pretty much force him into it. Nyasu's appeal is a reference to DP117, so that was awesome. (Yuusaku even watches!) Kojiro really starts getting into it and finds Contests fun, earned Musashi the ribbon. Musashi calls it "ribbon-chan" and cherished this one more than any of the others. Thankfully, this is the last time we ever see Kojiro being an ass towards Musashi.

DP161: "The Curtain Raises! Pokemon Contest - The Asatsuki Convention!!" - Before the Contest, Musashi said "Now, let the Rocket-dan become one and make the best stage show ever!". Apparently, much training went on for this Contest (God forbid we get to see it though) and everyone helped. Contests are more of a team thing now that Kojiro and Nyasu understand what she sees in them. This Contest is the first time Musashi barely involves herself in an appeal.

DP162: "Double Battle! (Hikari) vs. Plusle and Minun!!" - Kojiro and Nyasu are disappointed that Musashi's new battle technique didn't work when they were both sure it would. Musashi is the most upset after any loss thus far, falling to her knees in horror. The TRio cheer on Hikari to beat Urara, who had earlier defeated Musashi.

DP167: "The Pokemon Beach School!" - Momoan introduces Musashi as the "captivating, gorgeous lady". Musashi doesn't make any comment on that, and instead runs out on stage and releases Habunake. She's confident, shows determination and states that she'll get her fourth ribbon today. Nyasu says that she "shows a different kind of fighting spirit today" and Kojiro is certain Musashi will win her 4th ribbon.

DP171: "Togekiss Dances About! The Princess' Pokemon Contest!!" - Musashi tried to earn her fifth ribbon, but ends up being defeated by a girl who was pretending to be Hikari in order to see what being in a Contest was like. Unlike other times, there's no goofy reaction by Musashi when she loses this time. She just sits with her head hung, not saying a word. Kojiro and Nyasu try to cheer her up, but it's only when the girl gives her the ribbon that she gets happy again.

DP174 - DP177: Grand Festival - (It's easier to just put this all under one heading) Things gone similar to how they have before. The judges praise Musashi for her unique phsyical style of appealing and she manages to make it into the Top 4! This cap right here sums up all of Kojiro (and Nyasu's) development when it comes to Musashi and her Contests. They no longer sigh and wish she'd give it up. They not only support her, but truly believe she can win. They even go so far as to make merchandise (that sells pretty well for the most part). However Musashi ends up losing to Hikari. It looks like she's going to rampage, but simply says Hikari better not lose in the finals. Of course, she does end up losing to Nozomi. Musashi, infuriated that she didn't lose to someone who ended up winning, decides to give up Contests for good and focus on Rocket stuff only. This was our very first sign that the 5th generation anime would be different. Though at the time people weren't sure if it was foreshadowing or not.

That about sums up DP. The league and the few episodes surrounding it didn't give us anything shippy. But you could still feel the close bond Musashi and Kojiro now had, and that Nyasu was more of a third wheel again. Which is where the radio show is picking up at.

I could go on longer and in more detail, but this is plenty long as is. XD Besides, you should watch and see this stuff for yourself! You can see there a few inconsistencies with the development of the Contests. But that's due to more who wrote them. Tomioka episodes have more consistent development, whereas the Contests written by others mostly stall in how the TRio were in AG.

I was such a fan of DP Rocketshipping, but ever since Pokemon Radio started, I no longer feel so much nostalgic about DP. I still find all these hints cute and heartwarming though <3 And of course DP117 will be always different league as my most favourite episode ever (next to the Hoso ep) <3 Gee, it made Rocketshipping as good as canon after all!

I knew that right after I saw the episode. I'm glad that my theory about it being the last time was right.

Your summary of Musashi's character development is very nice :) I really have nothing else to add, but this little thing.

Musashi didn't want that ribbon at first, because it would be a pity ribbon and it's only thanks to Kojiro she decided to take it. Remember how she used to cheat to win the ribbons? In the end of DP she developed so much pride and sense of honesty that she didn't want to take the ribbon she didn't win even if it was given to her as something she deserved.

Hmm. That's quite a list. I've been watching a lot of DP lately, but clearly not the right ones as I've seen only 3 of those. Thank you.

Thanks so much for the thorough DP primer! <3 Through this and a read-though of the season (admittedly on Pokemopolis, because they're hilarious), I feel like I've sort of caught up to the progression that I missed. I think that the radio show is going to give us a nice dose of 'shipping after a mostly dry spell in BW.

Oh, ahaha! I've found DP117 on my computer, randomly sitting in my video files! I'm watching it again immediately~! I think I'm going to have to hit up IRC channels to find the rest that I want. (I prefer the Japanese or subtitled versions; I'm still not comfortable with the "new" English voices, LOL.)

I'm new to this forum, but I've been following it for a long time. : ) I really love it and I love that there are still so many Rocketshippers out there after all these years. I'm posting because of a few things. I'm currently writing a Rocketshipping Fanfic about Jessie and James' past together, and I wanted to get some different viewpoints on how you all view the canon for their lives before Team Rocket. I know there is some obvious contradiction in the canon with "Love and the Origin of Youth" vs the Bridge Bike Gang and Pokemon Tech episodes, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out. How do you guys see the canon in your heads? Is there more of a general acceptance of one over the other? Do you try to link them together somehow? I personally am a fan of linking the two together, but I was just curious to see the viewpoints of other fans of the ship. I apologize in advance, as I'm sure this has come up before. : )

IMO, I think the Bike Gang and Pokemon Tech stuff have been retconned. Why you ask? Because those episode have never been referenced again, while Love and the Origin of Youth had three references to it in DP. Luckily for me, I already wrote them down. XD

Hi, NeoRocket! Glad to see more 'shippers! I personally use the Housou canon over the others, but I feel like they could be mixed up. I'm just not sure how yet... haha. (I've only seen the English version of the Kanto eps.)

I found myself watching The Origin of Love and Youth the other day, and I ended up writing a long piece about how the first lines of the motto fit into the scene where Kojiro shows up after he gets injured. I've put it under a cut for length, but it's pretty interesting, so I think you'll enjoy reading it. Enjoy!

Love and Origin of the Motto

Tonight I watched "The Origin of Love and Youth" where Musashi and Kojiro meet. After Kojiro gets injured, Musashi and Nyasu are supposed to go on a mission, but Jessie walks away from it... until she sees that Kojiro has returned. Here's that little part:
ムサシ：見返れた寂ってわけね。あたしの人生なんかこんあだな。
(Musashi: Mikaereta sabitte wake ne. Atashi no jinsei nanka konna da na.)
コジロウ：なんかこんなだなといわれたら答えであげるのが世の情け。
(Kojiro: Nanka konna da na to iwaretara kotae de ageru ga yo no nasake.)

There it is! Kojiro responds what we identify as a modification of their first lines from their first motto. But what does that mean to them in this context, and what will it mean to them in the future?
Musashi's line is fairly easy to translate in meaning (and a bit less so literally). It reflects her feelings of abandonment and how she feels like she's always been abandoned. It probably stung a little more because she had confided in Kojiro about it. She says, "It all means that I looked back and I was deserted. This sort of thing is what my life is."

Kojiro's response is what needs to be examined. He's waxing awfully poetic for a walking mummy. The translation of his first line in the motto per Bulbapedia is: "The answer we give will be the world's compassion!" So, given that, his response to her is, "If you say, What sort of thing is this?, the answer will be the world's compassion." This was the definition of the line that later got put into the motto. But does Kojiro mean that in this context? I think that he's playing with words here, and giving one answer on the surface and another underneath. (I don't know if I'm remembering this correctly, but I'm recalling at one point in the series where Kojiro said he wrote poetry, I think during some sort of contest in a G/S arc or something.) There's the translation above, with their direct if/then exchange. But if you play with the words, it holds a deeper meaning.

As translated by the dictionary at goo.jp, the word 情け (nasake) has a primary definition of "sympathy" or "pity", and put in several different contexts it could be construed as compassion or mercy or charity. The tertiary definition is a simpler one: "love". The word 世 (yo) means "world" or "life" or "times", but stretching the vowel gives several alternates, namely 要 (you) as in "essence" and 様 (you) as a comparison to mean "like" or "seems". Let's check the sentence again, but change the 世 to 要 and alter our 情け definition. It can be translated as: "If you say, What sort of thing is this?, the answer will be the essence of love." And swapping in the other 様... "If you say, What sort of thing is this?, the answer will be something that seems like love."

I think Kojiro meant both of them, masked by his statement of grandeur. A great representation of the essence of love is a person just being there for you even when things are horrible for both parties. He mentions to her earlier, at the same time she tells him about being abandoned, that he's run away from a lot of things and doesn't want a 逃げつづけた人生 (nigetsuzuketa jinsei), literally a "continued-to-run life". He's showing some backbone by sticking around when he hasn't before. This is a running theme for the TRio as well, based on the numerous disbanding/rebanding episodes. He's also vaguely asking, What's going on between us? What do we have here? This is amplified later when he falls over her, and she blushes with that terrified look on her face (and yet, they can't move). Kojiro, tricky as he is, has folded all of this into one phrase. Well, he had time to think of it laying in that hospital bed...

Haha, all of this came from me watching it and thinking, Why does he say that? It has to be something that means something here. And I can picture Musashi or Nyasu, when they were making up a motto, saying, Remember that one line Kojiro whipped up? and maybe he was outvoted two to one on using it. And I have no doubt that it evolved into a line about getting the world's attention. But I think every once in a great while, Kojiro remembers the hidden meaning, and then it's the origin of love all over again.

You seem mighty familiar! ;) I have to agree with fruitsmoothierevenge to an extent...I've always wanted to merge them somehow because the bike gang bit was *SO* adorable, but I'm stumped with how. So I usually try to focus on "Love and Origin of Youth." I think I know which fic you are referencing, however, and have to say that it is coming along lovely. I would just say to keep in mind how incredibly distant they seem. To merge the story is to take on a lot, but it's not impossible.

Wow, fruitsmoothierevenge! I am always envious of those who can translate Japanese and your piece is wonderful! This seems so sweet and so fitting with Kojiro. I remember the poetry episode - Fake Okido! Pokémon Senryū Confrontation!! or Will the Real Oak Please Stand Up? I got so excited over that little tidbit. And the fact that Jessie was surprised with this (no idea if Musashi was or not) maybe can contribute to it finally being used in the motto. THIS is why I love Rocketshipping. It's a completely new way to look at something years after it aired. It definitely makes that episode just grow and grow in pure Rocket loveliness. It's this pull and tug that is so loved about the two of them...and it's opened up in a way that I never would have imagined. And the pressure it gives to that scene with him over her...BEAUTIFUL! YES!!! i'm new to rocketshipping, but i have been watching the kanto and johto dvd's and there are so many hints that i didn't notice when i was younger :3 kinda sad seeing what happened to team rocket in unova.. they are not the same, but out of every ship i believe this is easily the most legit :)

I've followed this thread also, for quite a long time, but I hadn't a clue how to make an account.Anyways, I'm glad there are still Rocketshippers, most of my club of rocketshippers were lost in B&W... and all of these are very good points.I hope this thread won't become another lost forum.And I'm really hopin those two hook up, cause if they never do, I'm pretty sure every Rocketshipper of the world is gonna fling themselfs off the empire spate building.-rocketshipping, now, and forever.never question it!- la random thing in my mind.
