Wishing you a happy birthday May!
Hope you get all the presents you wanted,
And hope to see you in the next contest!
- From Solidad, Drew and Harley
Smiling to herself, May closed the little card and set it aside with the shiny blue ribbon case it had come with. The present had just arrived that morning, tucked inside the mailbox of her Petalburg home.
What a wonderful day it was…
The brown haired coordinator slid the present aside and turned to lie on her bed, watching the blank ceiling. She had come back from Johto to spend her birthday with her family, having missed them throughout her travels and wanting to relieve some of her homesickness.
The day had been quiet but enjoyable. Her dad had closed the gym just to spend the day with her, while her mother had cooked her favorite foods and baked a decadent chocolate birthday cake. Max, having missed his sister, had decorated her room with streamers and balloons, then proceeded to give her a new bandana he had bought at the store downtown.
They spent the entire day laughing and catching up with their adventures and mishaps, talking until the sun had dissipated into the horizon and the sky had turned a velvet dark blue.
Remembering it all, May’s peaceful smile suddenly faded. Her gaze went toward the window, staring out into the star sprinkled sky.
No word from him yet…
Her blue eyes flickered back to the small pile of presents laid neatly at the edge of her bedspread. There was a ramen cookbook from Brock, a jewelry set from Dawn, and the ribbon case from Solidad, Drew and Harley…
But nothing from him.
Nothing from Ash at all.
Not even a phone call, or even a little card. May began to sigh, but then stopped herself.
Stop it May! Ash is probably very busy; what, with all his gym battles ad league championships – you can’t expect him to get anything for you!
She suddenly felt ashamed; the inner voice made perfect sense. She should be grateful that her other friends had time to actually get her something…
But what if he just forgot? Or he just doesn’t care…?
May shook her head, fiercely trying to ignore that voice. Why did she care anyway?
Because you…
At that moment, the ringing of the doorbell startled her, breaking the thought.
Who could that be…?
Curious, she walked out of her room and into the main hall, where her family was now suspiciously surrounding the door, but making no move to open it.
The doorbell sounded again.
“Um…guys…what’s going on?” she asked hesitantly. Max looked like he was trying to suppress a smile. Both her mom and dad also looked pleased.
May turned on her little brother. “Max? What is going on?”
Max adjusted his glasses and beamed up at his older sister. “Just open the door May. It’s another birthday present. A late one.”
Now completely confused, May went toward the door and, with one last puzzled look at her family, opened it.
There, standing bathed in the moonlight, was Ash.
Her own eyes didn’t even comprehend at first glance. But, as she drank in his features, the ruffled black hair, the strong physique, and the ever present reckless smile, she knew it had to be him.
Her own voice trembled, whispering and forming words without her permission.
“Ash…?”
The black haired boy grinned.
“Happy birthday May.”
(I could end it here but I feel like adding more xD)
He then quickly opened his backpack and extracted a silver wrapped gift box, holding it out to her.
“I’m sorry May...I had meant to come earlier but the ferry was delayed and…I wasn’t able to get a really big present but-”
He didn’t even get to finish the sentence. Without even thinking, without even considering the possible effects that could take place, May threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.
Ash dropped the gift in surprise, his brown eyes wide with disbelief. Then, slowly, they changed, from shock, to realization, then to bewildered happiness.
May suddenly broke the kiss, tightening their embrace and moving her lips to whisper in his ear.
“You already got me the best present there is.”
“ …You.”
