In “Fire and Ice,” Robert Frost creates meaning through techniques such as irony and symbolism.
At the time Frost wrote this poem, the top astronomers believed that the world would either end in the fiery explosion of the sun, or the icy coldness that would follow such a calamity. This concept of the world ending by one of these two elements is the basis of Frost’s poem. However, he means more than humanity being literally eradicated. In this poem, Frost uses fire to represent human desire and greed and uses ice to represent hatred. These comparisons are fitting because desire burns inside us, devouring any thoughts not pertaining to our lust or envy, and hatred freezes our hearts over so that we are incapable of feeling any form of compassion toward others. Through this comparison, Frost demonstrates his belief that these two faults are what will cause our eventual downfall.
