The reasons for needing the surgeries were real, the surgeries themselves were real, and I'm pretty sure it was meant to be more informative than entertaining. I don't know if that counts as "reality" or documentary. I don't remember it much (loooong time ago), so I don't remember how much each person (doctors, patients, family) talked to the camera, though.
