Pokémon Snap not originally a Pokémon game: Iwata states original game's 'motivation was unclear'

In a recent Iwata Asks column on Wii.com, Satoru Iwata, CEO and president of Nintendo Japan, revealed that Pokémon Snap was not originally a Pokémon game. The photo-taking game was transformed into a Pokémon game due to a lack of motivation, with the Pokémon world fulfilling the empty gap.

It still is a fun game, and I am glad it was changed.

Pretty much the same thing that happened to Epic Yarn, then.

I wonder why they revealed this so long after the game's release.

This topic sort of reminds me of how Super Smash Bros. originally wasn't going to involve Nintendo characters and was going to be called "Dragon King: The Fighting Game" but was later changed.

Anyway, always interesting to find out about development details.

Intruging... Actually that discribes the entire idea process behind anything. Not just video games.

It's interesting to see what creative processes go into games, since we usually only see the end result. This end result is usually very very different from what the original idea was supposed to be.

In laymen terms, yes. You'd be surprised on what you'll find out when doing some Research on Video Game Development.

I'm glad there was a lack of motivation. Pokemon Snap is one of my favorite games of all time.

I honestly can't imagine the game NOT being about Pokémon.

I would have been happy with it being a normal game, would have loved it if it was anything like Elebits or Katamari... Just Japanese world style, I guess.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Kind of like how Super Mario Brothers 2 in the US was actually another game that had Mario and friends shoehorned into it, to make it profitable.

What would you have to photograph then if it was going to be a non-pokemon game?

Well that is really how all spin-off games start anyway. What else could really be photographed for a few hours? Anything real-world would get old after a while.
