I'd imagine the reason that the releases are smaller this time is so that it takes them longer to catch up with Japan.
Also, considering Viz have lately been releasing their more popular titles in 3-in-1 reprints, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd just release the volumes as a "2 volumes in 1" thing.

What I can perceive as a good thing, though, is that the short-lived HGSS era is long over, so we probably can't expect them to hurriedly release those yet-unreleased volumes without Japan even getting them first. Again, probably.And honestly, if those sold I'd be surprised.

Only cover artwork I can find are the ones we've seen for volumes 1 and 2. No Japanese tankabon, and no volume 3-4 covers.
Yeah, figures they'd use the artwork Kusaka put up on the main site for their first volume.
What still strikes me as anything but normal is that they actually stuck "Pokemon Black and White" in the same continuity as the past Pokemon Special series. Did they ever even consider that people'd mix that up with the show airing on television right before their eyes? I mean, that's their excuse for adding the Platinum to the DP arc, why not do it when it's actually sensible? (And "Adventures" has been their term for Special since 2000!)
I have no idea. Maybe someone should start a FB group about it or something?

I wonder if Viz will include extras like the real volumes have. It's not unheard of for an American version of the manga to have it's own extras (Like Dark Horse's Evangelion manga's for example) and I'd think it'd be a treat if they included them.

I believe they'll eventually come out with Tankobon, although I think the chances will increase if 1, these 80 page things sell well, and 2, if people write to viz and tell them they want the official Tankobon. If we give Viz reason to believe they'll make money off publishing the tankobon, I think they will.
/optimism and speculation
I don't see why they wouldn't sell the actual volumes when they come out since they'd be a long time coming. First Platinum needs to finish in volumes Japan, then HG/SS needs to occur in volumes in Japan. Then Japan'll release B/W in volume form. That'd be so far from now that I'm sure Viz'd want to release volumes. They'd have more stuff in them anyway. And probably rewrites. And surely bonus pages.
Maybe Viz'll be able to release B/W volumes in 2013, sometime?
