"Pocket Monsters B2 - W2 ~ A New Legend ~" Review Thread

Chapter One came out in this month's issue of CoroCoro Comics.



The story takes place right after the end of BW. It stars Arata (アラタ), a young boy who's not quite old enough to be a Pokemon Trainer. In this first chapter, Arata meets Cheren and gets him to help him protect a Keldeo he had befriended. Along the way, a duo of Plasma-Dan grunts who are unaware that their organization's been disbanded try to steal Keldeo! The two are eventually saved by Hiro (ヒロ), Cheren's friend who defeated the Plasma-Dan not too long ago.

The chapter ends with a time skip to two years later. A noticeably older Arata gets his starter pokemon and sets out on a new journey.

Does this manga take place in the same continuity as the first?

"First one?" Are you guys talking about Pocket Monsters BW The Hero of Thunder and Fire? Because this series is not connected to that one in any way.

The name "A New Legend" made me think it was a sequel.

Alright, so that was a flashback. That explains why Cheren wasn't a Gym Leader.

Not really a *flashback*...the story just started immediately after the events of the BW games and then did a time skip.

I figured since it was by the same artist and the games are sequel games then the two manga would be related. Guess I was wrong; it's just a straight adaptation.

Well it looks interesting.

@Dogasu Did Hiro say anything interesting? Was it implied what he would do next?

Not really. He just rides in on his Reshiram, scares away the Plasma-Dan grunts, and then tells Arata that he's a good person and should become a Pokemon Trainer someday. He's only in like six pages altogether.

So I picked this one up... and eh, I dunno. It's a good enough story in its own right, showing Arata overcoming his fears and staying true to his promise to protect Keldeo against all odds, and it introduces characters, plot points and Pokemon that will no doubt become important later. For a series that's coming out now, at the height of the B2W2 hype, being named after B2W2 and being printed in a booklet otherwise dedicated to showcasing new aspects of B2W2, however... there's barely anything in it directly concerning itself with those games. It's more of an advertisement for the Keldeo event than for the games it's supposed to get people excited about. You feel kinda cheated, and I'm sure a lot of the kids reading this and expecting a B2W2-based story did, too.

The scientist that resurrected Genesect in the games is called Kenji (Dudley in the English versions). Fossil Valley doesn't exist in the games, either.

I think it's rather ridiculous that Arata basically defeated Genesect using his Oshawott and Riolu.

Wow. Whoever designed this Dr. Zeno guy wasn't exactly being very creative with his clothes, were they? It's just Colress' clothes.

Also, what does the Scouter say about Genesect's power levels?

So, all along, Genesect was just a way for that old Scyther's life to be extended by developing an armored, life-support system.

Well, it was all just promotion and they don't really care about the power levels for this reason but I agree in that it makes no absolute sense whatsoever.
